- 4-Hour Walking Food Tour
– Excellent Santorini food tour with tastings (much of it along the caldera) from Firostefani to Fira. Highly Recommended!- Santorini Sunset Wine Tour
– Santorini wines are wonderful and this gives a good overview of 3 of the best wineries on the island. Hotel pick up and drop off make it easy. (The tour ends at the Venetsanos Winery which has incredible caldera and sunset views.)- Santorini Cooking Course
– A super fun introduction to Greek food. Lots of hands-on cooking. Great for groups, couples, or singles.- Reservations are required at most of the restaurants listed below. Reserving 3 to 5 days in advance will be fine most of the time – but if it’s a really special occasion then book a table weeks (maybe even months) in advance just to be sure.
- Tipping in Santorini: Tipping is customary in Greece tourist spots. A general rule for a casual meal at a taverna is to tip about €2 to €5 or to round the bill up to the nearest number ending in a “0” or “5.” For example, if your bill is €27, leave a total of €30. For higher-end restaurants, tipping 5 to 10% is standard; 15% is considered generous. For bars and cafés if ordering at the counter, round up to the nearest euro; for table service, tip about 5 to 10%.

This is the best restaurant on Santorini. If you ask at your hotel, “where is the best place to eat in Santorini?”, they’ll probably send you here. Reservations strongly recommended. The views are of Kamari beach and the airport. A perfect evening (away from the caldera) would include a meal at Metaxi Mas and then a late-night movie at the outdoor cinema in Kamari, about a 5-minute drive away. Metaxi Mas is located in Exo Gonia, down the hill behind the impressive Agios Charalambos church. There are parking lots on both sides of the church.Best Restaurants in Fira

One of my favorite things to eat on Santorini is a gyro from Lucky’s. Cheap and delicious. Perfect for lunch. You order at the cash register then place your receipt on the bar near the cook. A small cafe with good food (the Oia Spaghetti is delicious), reasonable prices, and a patio with spectacular views. The baklava is great. Most of the Oia restaurants I mention here are only open for dinner making Lotza a good option for lunch. The Ammoudi Fish Tavern is the best of them but they’re all good choices with wonderful seafront views. This is the best seafood restaurant in Santorini – but I don’t want it to be overrun by masses of tourists, so I put it at the end. It goes by a few different names (the sign says To Steki Tou Psara, Fisherman’s House). It’s right at the Vlychada port and you can often see the fish being unloaded from the fishing boats. This is an old school Greek taverna. Expect slow, friendly service. Cash only.

I am looking for a bar or restaurant where we can sit and have a beer with sweeping views down over white roofs and blue domes. Does it exist?
For the quintessential blue domes, Oia has the best viewpoints, but you’ll need to arrive early if you’re trying to see them at sunset. Check out Vitrin Cafe Creperie (great breakfasts, coffee, sweets, and a bar at night – the best sunset spot it Oia if you manage to snag a seat), Lotza (amazing views and traditional food), Mes Amis (awesome breakfast and sweets, views are toward the domes rather than over them), and Meteor Cafe (cafe by day, low key bar at night). Another option is Volkan on the Rocks in between Fira and Firostefani, a casual brewery with an awesome menu of light bites, stellar views, and an outdoor cinema. Volkan offers views over the caldera and toward the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral in Fira, so the domes are white not blue
Which has better sunset/caldera views between Athenian House and Naoussa?
Both are great but I’d go with Athenian House.
What is the “best” time to have a dinner reservation at the restaurants with a view? We will be visiting at the end of September so sunset will be ~7:10pm.
For the view, probably 6 or 6:30. That’s an early dinner but there are many early eaters in Santorini.

Thanks, Dave. I name-dropped your site at Oia Castle and the manager knew of you and your visit. Like Steve above, we also ate at Lucky’s and other recs like Naoussa and Ouzeri in Fira. Enjoyed fresh octopus, lamb kleftika, and of course 1.60 beef skewers at Lucky’s for late night noshing.
Got really lost trying to find our hotel, Oia Castle, which was distressing, but we made it. Stayed in the cave pool suite there. I would stress to people that the steps to Oia Castle are extremely steep, more so than other hotels there, and I actually slipped and fell pretty hard on the way down. Just FYI to those with mobility issues (which I don’t have). Beautiful views and lovely breakfasts. We took public buses from the airport to Fira and then on to Oia. That became one of our fun and adventurous memories…highly recommend for the adventurous and you can pay on the bus.
Back to restaurants though, the waiters at Ouzeri were fantastic..the brothers remembered us and called out to us as we passed by the next day. We took photos with them before we left. The staff at Naoussa were not what you would call friendly whatsoever, but the food was fantastic and they comped us a liter of wine. Very nice. I was surprised that the alleged complimentary Ouzo shots were never offered in Santorini, and a strange, sweet “ouzo” was given to us in Mykonos which was definitely not the real thing.
In Mykonos, we stayed at Platis Gialos which was fantastic at Thallasa, the last resort on the far end of the beach…quiet and lovely pool. We ate at Yialo-Yialo on the beach twice and every dish was fantastic. We had the monkfish and mussels, lambchops, pizza, Greek salad, and wine there…perfection! We also went to the Blue Myth at the very start of the beach because they promised us Greek dancing at 9 which must have been a ruse to get us to come in, but sadly there was no Greek dancing to be found. We had the Kleftiko and lambchops which were a bit better than at Yialo’s. We also visited Hippie Fish at Agios Ionnis to see the Shirley Valentine spot, and though we didn’t eat there, we saw the most beautiful platters of prawns and giant crab legs and were salivating!
For those who like beer and inexpensive wine, there are mini markets everywhere that sell cans of beers for under two euros and white wine for around six. Fabulous and cheap!
Probably TMI already, but we also stayed in Athens in Artemis at a VRBO and ate at the Island Basket right on the beach. Enjoyed eating a massive platter of prawns, mussels, fish, salad, bread at nearly midnight with our toes in the softest sand right on the beach. Fantastic! Anyway, I’m still dreaming of the fabulous food from Greece and cannot wait to return.

Hi Dave, I will be in Santorini for 3 nights staying at Homeric Poems. We are planning to have dinner there on our balcony with what we’re told is a caldera view, dinner at Remvi or Argo, and then dinner at Athenian House. All of our reservations are booked in time for sunset. Which would you recommend between Remvi and Argo? Or would you suggest somewhere else? We want to prioritize the caldera/sunset view without spending too much, which is why we chose one night for a special restaurant like Athenian House. We have tables booked on the cliffside for both Argo and Remvi but need to cancel one. Your website said Argo has obstructed views but other places (our hotel, Chase, TripAdvisor) suggest otherwise. Any thoughts on which has a better view, or somewhere else you’d suggest that isn’t very expensive? Thank you!
Argo is much better than Remvi. Not even close. Views from Remvi are better. The rooftop views from Argo are fine but I would still call them slightly obstructed.

Planning on walking into Oia and then hoping to have dinner at Ammoudi Fish Tavern one night. Preferred times are already booked up, so would you suggest a 7pm seating, or a later one around 9.15pm. The sooner the better. A month or two in advance is not unreasonable for the top smaller restaurants.
Hi Dave – firstly, love this site, been really helpful in honeymoon planning. Two questions if you don’t mind.
Would appreciate suggestions for dinner before getting the 22:20 ferry to Ios. We land around 2pm on a Sunday so will have the whole afternoon to kill. We’re then at Sun Rocks later in the week – first night is my birthday, so will need somewhere nice to eat within staggering distance.

On your ferry-day you’ll want to stay close to Fira (where the bus to the port leaves from). So do Ouzeri for the best food or Naoussa for the best view (and good food). For a good restaurant near Sun Rocks try Aktaion which has a lively atmosphere and tables that spill out onto the sidewalk. Though if you want something that stays busy later into the night and a bit more of a bar vibe you’ll want to head into Fira (about a 10 minute walk).

I’m going with my family to Santorini and Mykonos at the end of May. I have 1.5 year old toddler and was wondering if you know if the restaurants are child friendly as in do they have high chairs available?
High chairs are common in Greece but not universal. You’ll just have to ask before you enter to be sure. Of course, will depend on the restaurant and its typical clientele.
We are going to be visiting the week of Christmas. Do you know if restaurants are open on Christmas day and the week of Christmas? And would we have to make dinner reservations during Christmas week? I’m not sure how busy the holidays get.

There will be a few restaurants open in Fira and Oia, for sure. But which ones change every year so I’ve given up trying to predict. Yes, I would make a reservation once you find one open. Probably unnecessary but with only a handful of places open the most popular could fill up.

Cava Alta is the best restaurant nearby. In Pyrgos, about a mile away, though a tricky walk since there aren’t sidewalks for much of the route.
Hi Dave, myself and my partner are arriving in Santorini on 1st October and staying at the Fishermans House in Akrotiri. Could you give us some advice about transfers from the airport please? Is it best to prebook or should we just grab a taxi when we arrive? Great website, by the way!
As long as you’re arriving before 10pm you should be fine walking out the door and getting a taxi (though a queue can develop especially if you’re not the first ones to grab your bags and get out the door). The taxi queue is right out the door from arrivals – you can’t miss it. If you’re going to rent a car you can pick up at the airport and get that out of the way. But I wouldn’t do this if you’re not arriving in daylight as Akrotiri (and hotels) can be hard to find in the dark.

I’m celebrating my 40th in Santorini, staying in Oia. However would love to travel out for the day and eat at Metaxy Mas. Have had a look online but still can’t figure it out how to get there except from a taxi?? How easy is it to get to from Oia? Is the taxi a reasonable price or is public transport an easy enough option?

By bus it’s tricky but doable. Take a bus from Fira and get off in Pyrgos. Then it’s a 1km walk (you’ll need to map it). On the way back it’s easier to walk down to the Fira-Kamari road (which is busy with no sidewalk, I wouldn’t do it myself, but it is possible). Then you have to worry about not missing the last bus back to Fira (and then Oia) depending on what time finish dinner. You could bus to Fira and then taxi as a compromise but if you’re getting in a taxi you might as well go all the way. You can get Metaxy to order you a taxi for the trip back but do expect a bit of a wait. You could go for lunch instead of dinner and that makes catching the bus much easier.

There is a very small street market (usually fish and a few fruits and vegetables) opposite McDonald’s in Fira. There are also a few people selling fruit along the caldera path – often in Firostefani and Oia.
Staying at the Xenones Filotera in Imerovigli for 3 nights mid October. Wonder if car rental is essential; plan on some walking but at 74 not super energetic. Any island transport? Will we be able to see sunset caldera views without taxi hire; or if needed how expensive?

Xenones Filotera is located in a quiet stretch of caldera north of Imerovigli. Great caldera and sunset views from the hotel without going anywhere. There’s a bus stop a short walk from the hotel with buses to Oia and Fira. Buses run about every half-hour (in October).
Hi Dave, been reading a lot of the post on your blog in planning a trip later this month and must say I am really impressed by your efforts in providing incredibly useful information. I have after two attempts booked a table for two at Ambrosia however I have only just now read through reviews on tripadvisor and am a bit concerned about how many bad reviews they have received, mostly on service but also on the food. Was wondering if you were caught up on this and know anything either by own experience or from others about how likely it is that we would have the same struggle as many guests have claimed to have?

Ambrosia has good food and incredible views. It’s not one of my very very favorites but it’s good, for sure. Yeah, service is not top notch but it’s Greece – relax, enjoy the view, take things at Greek speed.
Than you Dave for recommending Metaxy Mas. It is an ideal location to stop off between the airport and the port.
The food was superb and the location stunning. It was so good that we visited the restaurant on our return journey between the port and the airport.

The cheaper the place the more single-traveler friendly they feel. Both the gyro places in Oia feel comfortable for solo travelers: Pito Gyros and Nikos Place. Lotza would be good (for caldera views). And Sunsets Cafe (for sunset views).

We’ll be staying in Oia and looking to have one ‘nicer’ local dinner that overlooks the Caldera. Something that feels romantic, but not overly stuffy or a tourist trap (and not over the top expensive). We’re leaning toward Ambrosia, but curious of any other recos? If Ambrosia, which seating time would you recommend? (FIRST SEATING at 19:00 ~ SECOND SEATING at 21:30 – 21:45).

Yes, go with Ambrosia. Very nice, intimate, wonderful views. I’d take the first seating as you’ll still be able to see the caldera – though the second seating will probably feel a little more romantic. Take a light sweater. It can get chilly along the caldera at night regardless of how warm it was through the day.

Hi Dave, We are a group of 10 girls coming to Santorini for one day on the 13th June. We have from 1pm-10pm on the island.
Happy to wander around all day but want to make sure we get a good seating for Sunset, without hundreds of people blocking the view. Where is the best place with a sunset view that can accomodate 10 girls? We are looking to book somewhere now. Also what time would you suggest booking?

Naoussa is a good restaurant with great sunset views. Franco is a bar with good sunset views and you wouldn’t need to worry about reservations (just show up early). Both are in Fira. You won’t have time to make it from Oia back to Fira in time to get back to your ship, so you’ll need to watch from Fira. Sunset is at 8:37pm on June 13th. It’s possible you won’t even have time for sunset in Fira. If the ship is departing at 10pm you might need to be back there by 9:30, which means you’ll need to be down in the Fira port at 9pm, so line-up for cable car by 8pm. If you wanted to buy yourself some extra time then walk down to Fira port instead of lining up for the cable car.

It depends when (reservations for the sunset would be mandatory pretty much anywhere) but in general, Selene, yes; Argo, no.

It’s not one of “the best restaurants” but you should try to get a gyro from Lucky’s in Fira. Good for lunch or an afternoon/late-night snack.

There are a handful of good restaurants in the village of Megalochori – about a 10 minute walk from Athermi Suites. You do have to cross a busy road and there’s a stretch with no sidewalks but once you’re in the town it’s charming and idyllic. Be sure to visit Gavalas Winery. All that said, renting a car is best when staying at Athermi.

Tropical Bar (in Fira with great views) is probably the best place to meet other solo travelers. Workers are friendly too. Mary Kay’s in Oia is similar (but no views). Not really any restaurants that lend themselves to meeting people.

Metaxy Mas is the best restaurant in Santorini and if you book far enough in advance they should be able to take 27. In Fira, Ouzeri would be great. In Firostefani, Da Vinci is good and could accommodate your group.

I usually eat at 8pm which is a little early by Greek standards but since there are many tourists on Santorini works fine. Anytime between 6:30 and 11pm you’ll find restaurants busy with diners.

Hi there. I like your site and you seem to know Santorini well! We have been there 4 times and love the place. Always stay in Firostefani. Next year in September spending 10 days at Dana Villas. It’s to celebrate my 60th and we may have about 20 of us there (or staying somewhere on the island) and I would like to have a cocktail party. I know there is a bar/restaurant on the caldera somewhere near the conference centre with great views. I thought I could organise a party there but can’t remember the name of it. It is on a corner along the walk from Fira to Firostefani. Or if you have other suggestions for a venue, I would love to hear them. There are two restaurants/bars/cafes on that corner: Irini Cafe and Volkan on the Rocks. Volkan has the better (more complete) view but Irini gets the shade in the afternoon which is nice (Volkan can be really exposed and hot). Irini has more food choices.

Try Mama Thira Tavern in Firostefani. It’s a short walk from Dana Villas. Good food, reasonable prices (for Santorini), partial views, and plenty of room for 30 to 40.

Go for drinks along the boardwalk in Kamari or see a movie at the outdoor cinema (also Kamari but out of town just a little – on the way to Metaxy Mas).

We are staying In Fira at Aressana Suites Hotel this October and we have a few questions for you if that ok?
Can we walk from Aressana Suites Hotel in Fira to Mezzo Restaurant In Imerovigli? If so how long and far is the walk and is it hilly? Are there busses to and from these paces along with taxis? Also roughly how much would a bus/taxi cost?
We are a couple in mid 60’s and we are looking for suitable restaurant’s in Santorini that are reasonably priced and have great food, great reviews and views?

From Aressana to Mezzo would be a good 20 minute walk (a lot of it is uphill) but certainly doable for anyone in decent shape. Bus would cost €1.60 and taxi less than €10. This would get you to the Imerovigli main park lot and from there Mezzo is a 5 minute walk. (It’s actually easier to find if you’re walking all the way from Fira, as you just stay on the footpath and you’ll eventually run into. When coming by bus/taxi you have to find the right path to take down the hill.) Walking back to Fira, obviously, is all downhill and much easier. Bus there, walk back, is a good compromise.

Naoussa has great views, good food, and isn’t too expensive. Argo feels a little fancier and food is even a little better but its view is a somewhat impeded by other buildings. If you make a reservation a few days in advance you can get a table with a pretty direct view out to the caldera.
Hi Dave, only just found your blog. It’s a bit short notice as we’re on the island now but do you know of a good eatery in imerovigli with a nice view which is fairly easy to walk to from a taxi. In the main, central part of Imerovigli, not really. There is Avocado which has great food and a taxi can pull right to its front door – but it’s across the street from the cliff. It sort-of looks out on the caldera but I wouldn’t call it a view (that said, you’re just 40 feet from great views). There are other options south of Imerovigli like La Maison and Skaros but while they have great views they’re not the typical Imerovigli view that looks north to Oia and the sunset (in fact the sunset is hidden from both La Maison and Skaros).
Hi Dave – I just have to first say that your blogs on Santorini/Greece have been so helpful throughout my planning! My husband and I will be in Santorini on our honeymoon August 16-20th and will be staying in Oia (Kastro Oia Houses). We’ve made dinner reservations at Metaxy Mas, but would love to know what your other must try restaurant would be that we should reserve in advance. Food is a huge priority for us while traveling, so we really want to experience the best! A nice view/location would be great as well, but we’re flexible with that if the food is great. We wish we could try all of the places above, but we only have 4 nights!

My short list would be Roka in Oia, Avocado in Imerovigli, Athenian House in Imerovigli (the best restaurant with a caldera view on Santorini), and Ouzeri in Fira (which has this odd diner-like sign that makes it look really touristy but the food is phenomenal).

Not many restaurants have sunset views in Oia (most look back into the caldera). Of the few that do Sunsets Cafe is probably the best. But for the best combination of great food and sunset views on the island then book a table at the Athenian House in Imerovigli.

There are not many restaurants that are both good and can accommodate that large a group. One that can do both is Ouzeri in Fira. Wonderful food and a large patio. Obviously reserve something in advance but I think they should be able to squeeze you in.
Dave, staying in Imerovigli(Sophia Suites) for 3 nights. Got any recommendations for restaurants that have great vegetarian(no meat, no fish) options? We do eat diary, and will also be venturing to Oia, and Fira as well, but Imerovigli will be our home base. Appreciate the insights!

Most Greek restaurants will have good vegetarian options so I wouldn’t worry about finding something. In Imerovigli, Avocado is probably the best choice for vegetarian meals.
What’s the dress code for dining on the islands? What about shoes? Are flip flops or sandals fine?

I don’t know of any restaurant that has a dress code. There are a few (particularly in Oia) where you might feel slightly out of place in shorts and sandals – but not by much.

Have just had a meal at Nikolas Taverna in Fira and had fantastic grilled octopus and chicken cooked in the oven with lemon and herbs. Would highly recommend.

Can you recommend a good restaurant close to the main bus station in Fira please? We are meeting friends for a birthday lunch. We will be coming in on the bus from Perissa and our friends will be coming in on the bus from Imerovigli – somewhere nice with good food but not too far from the bus station. We are first time visitors to Santorini arriving first week in June.

The closest and easiest to find (good) restaurant to the bus station is Mama’s House. It’s about a 1 minute walk from the station. Walk through the taxi parking lot and you’ll see it on your right. Or ask anyone, and they’ll point you in the right direction. Just as good but not quite so easy to find is Ouzeri. It’s no more than a 3 minute walk from the bus station but a first timer will need to ask for directions. If you want a view of the caldera (and great food) then Naoussa is a 5 minute walk from the bus station.

The cinema is in Kamari about a 5 to 8 minute drive from Metaxy Mas (but not walking distance). A taxi from Oia would be 25 to 30 Euros. But getting a taxi on the way back would not be easy. I’d either pre-arrange something or take the bus (which passes directly by the theater) back to Fira, and then taxi or bus from there.

My partner and I are getting married in Santorini on August 31st. We would like to hold a pre-wedding dinner on August 30th for all of our guests, paid for by us.
We are staying in Kamari and hoping to find a traditional Greek taverna where there may be some Greek Dancing etc. It would be good if it was a lively place with music as the evening goes on. There will be about 80 of us so it would be good to possibly fill an entire place? If not, have our own area.
I’m hoping to talk to the owner (we go out on May 3rd for four nights so will sort then.) and negotiate some kind of set menu with some wine on the table so we can keep control of the cost!!!
We don’t need the food to be amazing, it’s more about the atmosphere.

My top recommendation for a restaurant would be Metaxy Mas. But, it’s a 15 minute drive from Fira so might not work if you’re looking to combine it with drinking and going out. If you wanted to stay within walking distance of the clubs then reserve a table with a view (right along the patio edge) at Naoussa in Fira. For a club my favorites are Two Brothers and Tropical.

I have not heard this and hope it’s not true. Tripadvisor has reviews from November so not sure which one you read. Nikolas does sometimes close for the slower months so perhaps they confused that with going out of business.

I know Lucky’s is always open in December but as for sit-down restaurants it changes every year based on the whims and plans of the owners. You’ll just have to wander around and look. But certainly there will be some good places open.
I just wanted to thank you for the quality website you have. We visited Santorini for a week in early October (after spending a week in Mykonos) and found your information and advice to be right on target. We ate at many of your suggested restaurants (Karma, Da Vinci, Argo, Remvi, Lucky’s, Avocado) and they were all fantastic.
