Edinburgh Castle is the major visitor attraction in Scotland. The rock on which it is built was formed 70 million years ago and had Bronze Age inhabitants as early as 850 BC. England’s Edward I captured the castle when he invaded Scotland in 1296. However, it was taken back in 1314. In 1568 it was necessary to begin rebuilding what was a shattered castle, and today it remains a magnificent structure that is a must see! (Tip – listen out for the 1’oclock cannon which is set off every day from the castle).

Camera Obscura is located near the entrance to Edinburgh Castle and is filled with crazy mirrors, fun exhibits, and strange science. It’s all about illusion. Highly recommended.

Our Dynamic Earth is a science center right in the heart of Edinburgh which tells about the past, present, and future of our planet. It also tells the processes that shaped Earth. This project is supported by the UK’s Millennium Commission and is a fun and interactive hands on experience. Great for the whole family.

The Royal Botanical Garden in Edinburgh is the main scientific center for the study of plants of the four sites that are across Scotland. The Edinburgh Zoo is Scotland’s largest wildlife attraction. There are more than 1,000 animals in the Zoo’s parkland. Enjoy attractions and daily events that show off the animals in this spectacular place devoted to the conservation and welfare of animals as well as giving education on the environment.

The Gorgie City Farm is another free place to go to view animals and gardens. Children will adore the pony rides, cuddling with rabbits and other small animals, and perhaps working alongside a farmer. There are also sheep, pigs, guinea pigs, goats, horses, poultry, and more. Garden produce is available during the summer from the herb and vegetable garden.

The Ceramic Experience is fun for all ages. Customers are supplied with everything they need to paint blank ceramic mugs, jugs, animals, money banks, and other pieces. Included are the non-toxic paints, brushes, tiles, aprons, stamps, and stencils.
