My favorite hotel in Bangkok is the Berkeley Hotel Pratunam. 5-Star hotel with affordable/cheap rooms. Wonderful staff. Big breakfast buffet, great room service, and food at multiple restaurants in the hotel at attractive prices. Hotel is in the shopping district, with easy access to train and other touristy places.

For the best hotel in Bangkok near the airport, I recommend the Novotel Airport. We stayed there on flights between Hong Kong and Bhutan. We found the staff consistently courteous and the accommodations clean and spacious. The location is very close to the airport and apparently, a tunnel connects directly to the airport. We used the free hotel shuttle. The buffet food in the restaurant offered mainly Western dishes, but these were safe choices. Room service was slow in preparing a late meal during our return flight layover.

Recently returned from our first trip to Bangkok and was torn between the Mandarin Oriental and The Peninsula. Both are on the river which is very important if you are there for sightseeing since it’s easy to get from stop to stop on the ferry vs. a taxi which is very hard to get anywhere in the oppressive traffic. I chose The Peninsula over the MO due to the fact they have an onsite fitness center and spa vs. the MO has to take a ferry since there’s in the other side of the river near The Peninsula. We couldn’t have been happier with the Peninsula. First class service, gorgeous property, the fitness center was very nice and offers cold towels and to stretch you out after your workout. The breakfasts were fabulous and a travel tip I got from Fodor’s was to ask for a better rate at check-in when in Thailand and I honestly didn’t think this was possible but they immediately agreed to include breakfast which was $35/pp USD! Our room was quiet, dark and roomy. We can’t wait to return.
