Amalfi Hotels – My Tips

  • Why Stay in Amalfi Town?
The Transport Hub: Amalfi is the best base for exploring the coast because it is the main transportation hub. All ferries and buses start/end here. You can easily take day trips to Positano, Ravello, Capri, and Sorrento without complex connections.
The Vibe: It’s a living, breathing town with history (the Medieval Republic), not just a resort. It’s less vertical and steep than Positano, making it easier to walk around the center (Piazza del Duomo) if you have mobility issues or a stroller.
  • My Top Hotel Picks:
Best Luxury: Santa Caterina. The grand dame of Amalfi. It sits on a secluded clifftop about 1km from the center and features an elevator that drops you directly down to a private beach club and saltwater pool.
Best Historic Stay: Luna Convento. A former Franciscan monastery founded in 1222. It has a stunning pool built into the coastal rocks and a defensive tower that is now a restaurant.
Best New Luxury: Borgo Santandrea. A spectacular new 5-star opening with a private sandy beach (rare!). It is located in Conca dei Marini (a 10-minute drive from Amalfi), offering total tranquility.
Best In Town (Midrange): Residenza Luce. A boutique gem steps from Piazza Duomo. Great terrace views and perfect for being in the middle of the action.
Best on the Square: Albergo Sant’Andrea. Unbeatable location right on Piazza Duomo overlooking the cathedral stairs. Simple, honest, and includes breakfast.
  • The “No Car” Rule:
    • Do not rent a car for a stay in Amalfi. The coastal road is a nightmare of traffic, and parking in Amalfi Town is virtually non-existent or incredibly expensive (€30–€50+ per day).
    • If you must drive, ensure your hotel reserves a parking spot in advance. Otherwise, you will spend your vacation circling.
  • Transport Strategy (Ferry vs. Bus):
Take the Ferry: Whenever possible, use the ferry (Travelmar) to get to Positano, Salerno, or Capri. It’s faster, more scenic, and doesn’t get stuck in traffic. The ferry pier is right in the center of town.
The Bus Warning: The SITA buses are cheap and go everywhere (including Ravello), but they get incredibly crowded in summer. You often have to wait in long lines under the sun.
Tickets: You cannot buy tickets on the bus. You must buy them in advance at a “Tabacchi” (tobacco shop) or newsstand. Buy a stack of them when you arrive so you always have them handy.
  • The Crowds vs. Evenings:
    • During the day (10:00 am to 4:00 pm), Amalfi is mobbed with day-trippers from cruise ships and buses.
The Secret: The town transforms at night. Once the last ferry leaves, the day-trippers vanish, the locals come out, and the Piazza del Duomo becomes magical and relaxed. Staying overnight here lets you see this “real” version of Amalfi.
