Capri Hotels – My Advice

• For most first-time visitors, I recommend staying in Capri Town. It’s the island’s main center for restaurants, shopping, and nightlife, with the famous Piazzetta at its heart. The streets are pedestrianized, and many excellent hotels are within walking distance of the main square. La Minerva is my favorite boutique hotel here. For grand luxury, I love Quisisana.
• For a quieter stay, choose Anacapri. Located higher on the island, Anacapri has a more relaxed atmosphere, excellent restaurants, and generally lower hotel prices. It’s convenient for the Monte Solaro chairlift, Villa San Michele, and the Blue Grotto. Caesar Augustus is my favorite luxury hotel, with an extraordinary infinity pool and views over the Bay of Naples. Casa Mariantonia is a wonderful smaller hotel right in the center of Anacapri.
• For the best views of the Faraglioni rocks, stay southeast of Capri Town. Punta Tragara has one of the most spectacular settings on the island, overlooking the famous rock formations. Hotel Scalinatella and Casa Morgano are also excellent choices in this quieter part of Capri Town.
• Stay at least two nights if possible. Capri gets extremely busy with day-trippers, particularly around Marina Grande, the Piazzetta, and the Blue Grotto. Early mornings and evenings are much more enjoyable. Staying overnight also gives you time for a boat trip, swimming, and exploring both Capri Town and Anacapri without rushing.
• Don’t bring a car to Capri. Nonresident vehicles are restricted for much of the year, and the centers of Capri Town and Anacapri are pedestrianized. The funicular connects Marina Grande ferry port with Capri Town in about five minutes. Small public buses connect Capri Town, Anacapri, Marina Piccola, and other parts of the island. They can be extremely crowded in summer. Capri’s open-top taxis are convenient but expensive.
• Arrange luggage assistance before arrival. Many hotels are on pedestrian lanes that taxis cannot reach, and the funicular and buses are awkward with large suitcases. Most luxury hotels can arrange luggage collection from Marina Grande. Otherwise, porter services are available at the port. Confirm the service and cost with your hotel rather than assuming luggage will be delivered directly to your room.
• Capri is better for swimming than sandy beaches. Most beach clubs occupy rocky platforms or small pebble coves. Marina Piccola has beautiful views of the Faraglioni and several popular swimming areas. Marina Grande has a small public beach near the ferry port. For a memorable beach-club experience, consider La Fontelina or Da Luigi ai Faraglioni, but reserve ahead in summer.
• Visit the Blue Grotto early, but don’t plan your entire day around it. The cave can close whenever sea conditions make entry unsafe, even on otherwise sunny days. You can reach the entrance by boat from Marina Grande or by bus and a short walk from Anacapri. Morning visits have shorter waits, but queues can still be long. If the grotto is closed, a boat trip around the island is an excellent alternative.
• Capri is expensive, especially in summer. Hotels, restaurants, taxis, and beach clubs cost considerably more than on the mainland. Anacapri offers better value, while Capri Town is worth the premium if you want to walk to restaurants and nightlife. Book hotels well ahead for June through September.

An outstanding choice for couples who want privacy, exceptional service, and a peaceful setting within walking distance of Anacapri.

2. J.K. Place Capri – Best Near Marina Grande

Beautiful luxury boutique hotel overlooking Marina Grande, with elegant interiors, a heated outdoor pool, spa, and excellent Mediterranean restaurant. Rooms and suites combine classic Italian style with contemporary design, and many have private terraces or balconies overlooking the sea. The location is particularly convenient for arriving by ferry, though the hotel feels secluded from the busy port below. Shuttle service makes it easier to reach Capri Town. One of my favorite choices for travelers who want a quiet luxury hotel with easy access to the harbor and boat excursions.

3. La Minerva – Best Boutique Hotel in Capri Town

My favorite boutique hotel in Capri Town. La Minerva is an elegant, family-run hotel with a beautiful swimming pool, lovely terraces, and excellent service. Rooms and suites are bright and individually decorated, with private balconies or terraces; many have sea views. The restaurant serves excellent Italian food, and breakfast is a highlight. The location is ideal, on a quiet pedestrian lane within walking distance of the Piazzetta, Via Camerelle, and the Gardens of Augustus. A wonderful choice for couples who want luxury without the formality of a grand hotel.

4. Hotel Villa Brunella – Best Quiet Location in Capri Town

Elegant hillside hotel on the southeastern side of Capri Town, with beautiful sea views, a swimming pool, and terraces overlooking Marina Piccola. Rooms and suites are traditionally decorated, many with private balconies or terraces. The hotel has a restaurant, bar, and fitness facilities. Its location on Via Tragara is peaceful but still within walking distance of Capri Town’s restaurants and shops. Allow about 15 minutes to walk to the Piazzetta. A great choice for couples who want a quiet hotel with a pool and easy access to town.

5. Casa Mariantonia – Best Boutique Hotel in Anacapri

Charming boutique hotel in a historic villa on Anacapri’s main pedestrian shopping street. The property has a lovely garden, lemon grove, swimming pool, and excellent restaurant. Rooms and suites are individually decorated, with private balconies or terraces in many categories. Some suites have kitchenettes and accommodate families. The location is excellent, steps from restaurants, shops, the Church of San Michele, and bus connections around the island. My favorite choice for travelers who want a small, character-filled hotel in the heart of Anacapri.
