Best Places to Stay in Capri

  • Capri is a small, mountainous island off the coast of the Sorrento Peninsula and belonging to the Naples metropolitan area. There are two main towns here, Capri and Anacapri, along with two ports, Marina Grande and Marina Piccolo. Capri (called Capri Town from here out to distinguish it from the island) is the main settlement, long a luxury destination known for its high fashion boutiques, five-star hotels, fine dining, and nightlife. The Piazzetta is the heart of the island’s social life, where you’ll find the funicular to Marina Grande, the iconic clock tower, a handful of trendy bars, and sweeping sea views over the ferry port. Other attractions in Capri Town include the Certosa di San Giacomo, and 14th-century charterhouse turned museum, and the Giardini di Augusto, terraced gardens with panoramic views over Marina Piccolo. First-timers to the island should stay in Capri Town for its convenience, conviviality, and glamorous atmosphere. La Minerva is our favorite hotel here.
  • Anacapri is the highest settlement on the island, and from here travelers can take the chairlift up to Monte Solaro, the mountain whose peak is the highest point on the island. Attractions of Anacapri include Villa San Michele, an 18th-century home turned museum with ancient art and artifacts and lush gardens with panoramic views, and the San Michele Arcangelo, a Baroque church known for its hand-painted, maiolica floor mosaic depicting the Garden of Eden. The town itself is more relaxed and casual than Capri Town, with a mix of luxury and midrange hotels, high-quality restaurants, artisan workshops, and easy-to-access countryside with numerous hiking trails to scenic vistas or down to Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto, a sea cave known for its glowing sapphire light). The best hotel in Anacapri is Hotel Caesar Augustus
  • Marina Grande is the main port, where ferries from the mainland dock along with cruise tenders and tour boats. The largest beach on the island is here (Spiaggia Marina Grande, a pebble beach), along with seaside restaurants and souvenir shops. Marina Piccola lies on the south side of the island, sheltered from the wind and typically warmer than the rest of the island. There are a few scattered restaurants, yachts moored out in the bay, and handful of organized and free beaches with views toward the Faraglioni (sea stack rock formations).
  • Despite its diminutive size (just over 10 square kms), Capri’s dramatic landscapes mean you’ll need some kind of wheels to get around, be it by bus or taxi. Travelers are not allowed to bring cars (or even bicycles) to the island, though it is possible to rent a car once you’ve arrived. Many hotels offer free shuttle service to local points of interest, but most travelers end up taking the bus or taxi service. Buses are the most affordable options and are plentiful with routes to all the main towns and attractions. Tickets can be purchased in cash at the bus stations in Capri, Anacapri, and Marina Grande or on board the bus for an additional fee (€2.20 standard or €2.70 if you buy when boarding). Buses in Capri are tiny and fit about 10 people maximum, so space is valuable. When bringing luggage aboard a bus, each standard suitcase costs the same as an adult ticket. Children under 6 years old ride free. Between Marina Grande and Capri Town, the funicular is another good option with departures every 15 minutes. The price is the same as the bus; however, long wait times are very common.
