Positano Hotels – My Advice

• Positano is my favorite town on the Amalfi Coast for scenery, beaches, and luxury hotels. Its colorful buildings tumble down the hillside to the sea, and the views are spectacular. It’s also one of the most expensive places to stay on the coast, especially from June through September.
• Hotel location matters more in Positano than almost anywhere else on the Amalfi Coast. The town is built on a steep hillside, with winding roads, narrow pedestrian lanes, and hundreds of stairs. A hotel that looks close to the beach on a map may be a difficult uphill walk away. If you have mobility issues, check the exact walking route before booking.
• For the easiest access to the beach, restaurants, and ferries, stay in central Positano. The pedestrian streets around Piazza dei Mulini and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta are my favorite area for first-time visitors. Palazzo Murat has an outstanding location, a beautiful garden, and a pool. For a less expensive stay, I like La Tavolozza and Hotel Savoia.
• For classic Positano views, I love the eastern hillside around Sponda. Hotels here overlook the town, church dome, and sea. Marincanto is my favorite for its infinity pool and beach access, while Eden Roc is excellent for families. Expect an uphill walk back from the beach.
• For a quieter stay, look toward Fornillo and the western hillside. Fornillo Beach is less hectic than Spiaggia Grande, and hotels above it often have wonderful sea views. Villa Magia and Hotel Villa Franca are excellent luxury choices, but both sit high above town.
• My favorite luxury hotel is Il San Pietro. It has a private beach, a beautiful pool, exceptional restaurants, and some of the best sea views in Italy. The hotel is about two kilometers east of central Positano, so choose it for a luxury resort experience rather than the convenience of walking everywhere.
• Positano has two main beaches. Spiaggia Grande is the busy, photogenic beach beside the ferry pier, with beach clubs, restaurants, and views of the town. Fornillo Beach is smaller and more relaxed, reached by a scenic coastal path from Spiaggia Grande. Both have pebbles rather than soft sand. Arienzo and Laurito are smaller beaches farther east, reached by steep paths or seasonal boat services.
• Arrange luggage assistance before arriving. If you’re coming by ferry, ask your hotel about porter service from the pier. Porters can take bags to designated collection points, but they cannot necessarily deliver luggage to every hotel entrance. Some hotels have stairs or pedestrian-only access, even if you’re arriving by private car.
• Don’t rent a car. Parking is expensive and limited, and the coastal road gets badly congested. Ferries are my favorite way to visit Amalfi, Capri, and other coastal destinations when services are running. SITA buses connect Positano with Sorrento and Amalfi year-round, but can be very crowded in summer. The local Positano bus is useful for reaching the upper parts of town, though some walking and stairs are unavoidable.

1. Il San Pietro di Positano – Best Luxury Hotel

My favorite hotel in Positano and one of the finest luxury resorts in Italy. Il San Pietro occupies a spectacular clifftop setting with a heated sea-view pool, private beach reached by elevator, spa, tennis court, and Michelin-starred Zass restaurant. The beachfront Carlino restaurant is excellent for a more relaxed meal. Rooms and suites have beautiful sea views and private terraces, and breakfast is included. The hotel also offers boat excursions and other guest activities. It’s about two kilometers east of central Positano, with a complimentary shuttle into town. Best for couples who want an exceptional resort rather than a hotel in the middle of the action.

2. Villa Magia – Best Views

Beautiful boutique hotel high above central Positano, with outstanding views over the church dome, beaches, and sea. Rooms and suites are spacious, with private terraces or balconies; some have private pools or jetted baths. Facilities include two outdoor pools, a spa, and excellent dining. Breakfast is included. The elevated location is the main attraction, but it’s also the main drawback: getting down to the beach and back involves steep streets and stairs. A fantastic choice for couples who value privacy, views, and a quieter setting.

3. Palazzo Murat – Best Central Location

My favorite hotel in central Positano. Palazzo Murat is a historic palace tucked behind the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with a beautiful garden, citrus trees, swimming pool, and spa. Its courtyard restaurant and bar are lovely places to relax away from the busy pedestrian streets. Rooms and suites vary in size and view, with some overlooking the gardens or sea. Breakfast is included. The location is hard to beat: restaurants and shops are just outside, and Spiaggia Grande and the ferry pier are about a five-minute walk downhill. It’s one of the best choices for travelers who want to explore Positano on foot without staying high on the hillside.

4. Hotel Marincanto – Best Pool and Beach Access

One of my favorite hotels in Positano for its sea-view infinity pool and private beach club. Marincanto sits on the eastern hillside above Spiaggia Grande, with spectacular views across the water and toward the town. Guests have access to sunbeds and umbrellas at the beach club, reached by a long staircase, along with a restaurant and bar at the hotel. Rooms vary considerably, so book a sea-view room with a terrace if that’s important. The location is convenient for restaurants, shopping, and the ferry, but be prepared for stairs when going down to the beach.

5. Eden Roc – Best for Families

Excellent upscale hotel with spacious suites and villas, making it one of my favorite choices for families in Positano. Accommodations have sea views and private balconies or terraces; some feature outdoor jacuzzis. The hotel has a rooftop pool, wellness center, and two excellent restaurants: Adamo ed Eva for Mediterranean cuisine and Roc Pizza & Steak for pizza, steaks, and an extensive wine selection. Breakfast is included. Eden Roc sits on the eastern hillside near the Sponda bus stop, with restaurants and shops nearby. The beach and ferry pier are roughly a 15-minute walk downhill, with an uphill return.

6. Le Agavi – Best Secluded Resort

Luxury clifftop resort west of central Positano, with wonderful sea views, a heated swimming pool, spa, and private beach club reached by funicular. The hotel has several dining options, including a refined Italian restaurant and a more casual beachfront restaurant. Rooms and suites have private balconies or terraces, many with sweeping views over the water. Breakfast is included, and the hotel provides a shuttle to central Positano. The setting is peaceful and romantic, but it’s not a convenient choice if you want to walk to the town’s restaurants and shops several times a day.

7. Hotel Villa Franca – Best Rooftop Pool

Stylish boutique hotel high above Positano, with one of the town’s best rooftop infinity pools and spectacular views. Facilities include a spa, rooftop bar, and excellent restaurants, including a fine-dining option. Rooms and suites are elegant and contemporary, with marble bathrooms and private balconies or terraces in many categories. Breakfast is included. The hotel offers a shuttle to central Positano, which is useful because the walk back from the beach is steep. A great choice for couples who want a glamorous hotel with a lively rooftop atmosphere.

8. La Tavolozza Residence – Best Value

One of the best-value places to stay in central Positano. La Tavolozza is a small, friendly guesthouse with simple, comfortable rooms, some with private balconies and wonderful views of the town and sea. The location is excellent, close to restaurants, shops, and the pedestrian route down to Spiaggia Grande. It’s about a five-minute walk to the beach. There’s no pool or full-service restaurant, but that’s a reasonable tradeoff for the location and price. Book a sea-view room if available.

9. Albergo California – Best Sea-View Terrace

A traditional hotel on the eastern hillside above central Positano, with a large terrace overlooking the town and sea. Rooms are spacious by Positano standards, and many have balconies with excellent views. Breakfast is included and served on the terrace. Restaurants and shops are nearby, and the beach is reachable on foot, though the walk back uphill takes more effort. A good choice for travelers who want classic Positano views without paying luxury hotel prices.

10. La Rosa dei Venti – Best Near Fornillo Beach

Small, welcoming hotel in the quieter Fornillo area, with bright rooms and private balconies or terraces, many overlooking the sea. Breakfast is included. Fornillo Beach is reached by a steep walk and stairs, while the restaurants and shops of central Positano are about 15 minutes away on foot. The setting is quieter than the area around Spiaggia Grande, making this a good option for couples who prefer a relaxed atmosphere and don’t mind walking.

11. Hotel Savoia – Best Midrange Location

Attractive hotel in the heart of Positano, close to Piazza dei Mulini and the pedestrian route to the beach. Rooms are bright and traditionally styled, with balconies in many categories and sea views in some. Breakfast is included. The biggest advantage is the location: shops and restaurants are immediately outside, and Spiaggia Grande and the ferry pier are a short downhill walk away. An excellent alternative to Palazzo Murat for travelers who want a central location at a lower price.

12. Hotel Bougainville – Best Budget Hotel

Colorful, well-kept hotel in central Positano, surrounded by shops, restaurants, and cafes. Rooms are compact but comfortable, and some have balconies with town or sea views. Breakfast is included. The beach and ferry terminal are about a five-minute walk downhill, and the hotel is also convenient for the main road and bus stops. A practical choice for travelers who want to stay in Positano without spending a fortune on accommodation.
