Ravello Hotels – My Tips
- Ravello Overview: Ravello is the “Balcony of the Amalfi Coast.” Unlike Positano or Amalfi, it sits 365 meters (1,200 ft) high in the mountains, not on the water. This gives it the best views in the region but means it has no direct beach access. It’s quieter, more aristocratic, and famous for its music festival and gardens.
- No Car Needed: Central Ravello is a pedestrian-only zone. The streets are narrow lanes and staircases. A car is a hassle here; you will likely park it and not touch it until you leave. Everything in town – the Duomo, Villa Rufolo, Villa Cimbrone – is reachable within a 5-10 minute walk.
- My Top Hotel Picks:
- Best Overall Luxury: Palazzo Avino. The “Pink Palace.” It’s pure old-world glamour with a Michelin-starred restaurant and a rare feature for Ravello: a private beach club down on the coast (accessed by a free shuttle).
- Best Infinity Pool: Caruso, A Belmond Hotel. Famous for having one of the most stunning infinity pools in the world. It floats above the clouds. The service and grounds are impeccable.
- Best Historic Setting: Villa Cimbrone. You stay inside the actual 12th-century estate that tourists pay to visit. Home to the famous “Terrace of Infinity.” A bit of a walk from the center (10 mins), but magical.
- Best Value/View: Hotel Parsifal. A converted convent with a terrace view that rivals the 5-star hotels for a fraction of the price.
- The “Base Camp” Warning: While Ravello is beautiful, it’s a difficult base for exploring the rest of the coast. To visit Positano or Capri, you must first take a bus or taxi down to Amalfi (20-30 mins) to catch a ferry. If you want to island-hop or swim daily, split your stay: spend a few nights in Ravello for romance/views, then move to a coastal town (Amalfi or Positano) for logistics.
- Beaches: There are no beaches in Ravello. The closest public beach is Castiglione di Ravello, a tiny hamlet at the bottom of the mountain. You can walk down (thousands of stairs) or take the local bus. It’s lovely but small.
