Zakynthos, commonly referred to as Zante, is the third largest of the seven Ionian Islands, located in the Ionian Sea off the west coast of Greece.

Zakynthos has many beautiful beaches with clear blue waters, soaring white cliffs, and an abundance of olive groves. The island’s Blue Caves, accessible only by boat, are impressive and breathtaking – the cave walls and anything in or around the water, reflect the same striking blue of the seawater here. Many boat tours to the Blue Caves depart from the tiny port of Agios Nikolaos in the north (not to be confused with Agios Nikolas Beach on the south coast, opposite end of the island).

In the island’s capital, Zakynthos Town, Roma Street is a charming, pedestrian-only zone with a variety of wonderful eateries, souvenir stores, and ice cream shops. Solomos Square, the largest square on the island, sits on the marina, surrounded by beautiful buildings and home to cultural events, numerous statues, the Byzantine Museum, and the Cultural Centre with historical island exhibits. Stroll the area at sunset amid palm trees and sea views, to delightful Saint Markos Square, brimming with cafes, tavernas, and shops.

Laganas, located in Laganas Bay on Zante’s southern coast, is the island’s largest resort area, known for its festive and party atmosphere.

The famous Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach) is currently closed to all visitors.

When to Go to Zakynthos
June to August has the best and warmest weather, and is the peak tourist season. Prices for accommodations can be higher and touristy areas can be crowded. The shoulder season (May, September, and October) offers a good balance between fewer crowds, lower prices, and pleasantly warm weather.

How to Get to Zakynthos
The quickest way to get to Zakynthos is by flying into its international airport. From May to October there are direct flights from many European cities including Athens. Ferries to Zykanthos run from mainland Greece, and from the island of Kefalonia.

Best Places on Zakynthos for…

  • Where to Stay on Zakynthos for First-Timers: Zakynthos Town (aka Zante town)
With its central location, Zakynthos Town serves as an ideal base for exploring the island’s numerous attractions and beautiful beaches. It offers wonderful dining and shops, as well as a variety of good hotels, and its attractions include the Byzantine Museum and the Cultural Centre (historical museum). Some of the closest and best beaches to Zakynthos Town are Tsilivi Beach to the north, and Porto Zoro Beach to the south.

  • Where to Stay on Zakynthos for Families: Tsilivi

Families will appreciate its Blue Flag beach with sandy shores and water sports on offer (inflatable rides, kayak, SUPs, pedal boats, and windsurfing lessons). Beachside accommodations are well suited to families, try the wonderful Alexandra Beach Resort & Spa, featuring Family rooms with sea views that can sleep 4.

In Tsilivi village, Families can enjoy numerous restaurants, tavernas, cafes, and mellow bars. There’s also a children’s water park with a lazy river. Mini-golf and bowling are nearby and less than a 5-minute drive.

  • Where to Stay on Zakynthos without a Car: Tsilivi or Laganas
The public bus system on the island of Zakynthos can be irregular and unreliable, so getting around the island can be a challenge if you don’t have your own vehicle. Staying in the village of Tsilivi is a good option; it’s close to the port and offers lots of variety in accommodations and services, all the while retaining its Greek charm and beauty. Staying in the town of Laganas is a good option if you are seeking zippy nightlife, a long sandy beach, and free shuttles to two nearby beaches that are upbeat and action-packed.
