Chania With Kids – My Advice

  • Chania and West Crete are my favorite part of Crete for a first family trip. Chania has the island’s prettiest Old Town, good beaches close to town, and easy access to Falassarna, Elafonisi, and Balos. For a one-week trip, I would stay entirely in West Crete rather than waste time driving across the island.
  • Best family hotel near Chania: Domes Zeen Chania. It’s the best combination of stylish family accommodation, beach, pool, kids’ club, and quick access to Chania. This is my first choice for families who want a real resort without giving up dinners and sightseeing in the Old Town.
  • Best family resort in West Crete: Euphoria Resort in Kolymvari. It has a water park, huge pool, kids’ club, sports, family rooms, and an easy all-inclusive setup. It’s farther from Chania, so choose it for a resort vacation rather than nightly trips into town.
  • Best area for beach plus Chania: Nea Chora. The sandy beach is right in town, there are good seafood tavernas along the waterfront, and the Venetian Harbor is about a 15 to 20-minute walk away. Sea & City Apartments is my favorite value choice here, with family apartments, kitchenettes, a pool, and private parking.
  • Best Chania Old Town hotel for families: Palazzo Duca. The larger suites sleep families of four and include fridges or basic kitchen facilities. The location is excellent for walking to the Venetian Harbor, restaurants, and shops. There is no pool, so stay here for Chania itself, not a resort vacation.
  • Best area for a traditional beach vacation: Agia Marina, Stalos, and Platanias. These adjoining towns west of Chania have sandy beaches, pools, family hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and frequent buses into town. Agia Marina is my favorite of the three. Stalos is quieter and generally better value. Platanias has the most restaurants, shopping, and nightlife.
  • You don’t need a rental car if you’re staying in Chania, Nea Chora, Agia Marina, or Platanias. Buses and taxis are good enough for ordinary sightseeing and evenings in Chania. But for a week in West Crete, I would rent a car for at least two or three days. Falassarna, Elafonisi, mountain villages, and quieter beaches are much easier with your own car.
  • For families, I prefer Falassarna to Elafonisi in July and August. Elafonisi is beautiful but becomes extremely crowded. Falassarna is huge, sandy, easier to park at, and has much more room to spread out. Elafonisi is still worth seeing, but arrive early.
  • Balos is the most awkward famous beach with young children. The lagoon is spectacular, but getting there means either a rough road followed by a steep walk or a boat excursion from Kissamos. With toddlers and younger kids, I would choose Falassarna or Elafonisi first.
  • Fly into Chania Airport if you’re staying in West Crete. Chania Airport is about 25 to 30 minutes from Chania Town. Heraklion is roughly two hours away by car, so don’t choose a Heraklion flight just because the fare looks slightly cheaper without considering the transfer.

Where To Stay in Chania With Kids

Chania Old Town & Venetian Harbor

Best for families who want atmosphere, restaurants, sightseeing, and easy evenings without a car. The Old Town is largely pedestrianized and packed with tavernas, cafés, shops, and beautiful lanes leading down to the Venetian Harbor. The downside is that most hotels are historic buildings without pools, vehicle access is limited, and parking can be a pain. I like the Old Town best for families with older children who will enjoy exploring and eating out more than sitting around a resort.

Nea Chora

My favorite all-around family base in Chania. You get a proper sandy beach, waterfront tavernas, supermarkets, and family apartments, while the Venetian Harbor is still close enough to walk to. Nea Chora does not have the postcard setting of the Old Town, but the logistics with kids are much easier. If you want both beach and Chania without moving hotels, stay here.

Agia Marina

My favorite beach-resort town west of Chania. The beach is long and sandy, there are lots of family hotels and apartments with pools, and restaurants and shops are everywhere. Buses into Chania are frequent. Agia Marina is busy in summer but still feels more relaxed than Platanias.

Stalos

Quieter and usually a little cheaper than Agia Marina and Platanias. The beach is sandy, there are plenty of apartment-style hotels, and Chania is still easy to reach by bus or taxi. A good choice for families who want a simple beach holiday without much nightlife.

Platanias

The liveliest resort town west of Chania, with a long beach, lots of restaurants, bars, shops, supermarkets, and family hotels. I prefer Agia Marina with younger children, but Platanias works well for families with teenagers who want more activity in the evening.

Kolymvari

Much quieter and farther from Chania, about 23 km west of town. Kolymvari makes sense if the resort is the main event and you plan to spend lots of time at the pool and beach. It’s also well positioned for driving to Kissamos, Falassarna, and Balos. The beach is coarser than Agia Marina or Stalos, so don’t stay here purely for the sand.

The 9 Best Family Hotels in Chania & West Crete

1. Domes Zeen Chania – Chania

Luxury beachfront resort and my favorite family hotel in the Chania area. Domes Zeen feels far more stylish and relaxed than a typical family resort but still gets the practical things right: family bungalows and pavilions, two-bedroom villas, private-pool options, kids’ menus, babysitting, a baby club, and an excellent kids’ club. The large pool sits just behind the beach. Best of all, you’re only about 3 km from the Venetian Harbor, so it’s easy to spend the afternoon at the pool and head into Chania for dinner.

2. Euphoria Resort – Kolymvari

The best full-scale family resort in West Crete. There’s a huge pool complex, water park, kids’ club, sports, spa, multiple restaurants, and family-friendly rooms and suites. This is an easy hotel with younger children because so much is on site and the all-inclusive setup removes a lot of daily planning. The compromise is location. Chania is far enough away that I would not stay here if I planned to eat in the Old Town every night. It’s better for families who want a resort vacation with a few day trips.

3. Sea & City Apartments – Nea Chora

My favorite good-value family stay in Chania. Modern apartments with kitchenettes, family-sized units, a small outdoor pool, and private parking. Nea Chora Beach is close by, and the Venetian Harbor and Old Town are about a 15 to 20-minute walk. This is not a luxury resort, but the combination of beach, kitchen, pool, parking, and walkability is hard to beat with kids.

4. Avra Imperial Hotel – Kolymvari

Large, polished resort close to Kolymvari Beach with several pools, a children’s pool, spa, multiple restaurants, family rooms, two-bedroom suites, and suites with private or shared pools. I prefer Euphoria with younger children who will make heavy use of the water park and kids’ facilities. Avra Imperial is the better fit for families who want a slightly quieter and more grown-up resort. Kolymvari village and harbor are close enough to walk to.

5. Samaria Hotel – Chania

The most practical full-service hotel in central Chania. Samaria sits beside the main bus station and about a 5 to 10-minute walk from the Old Town and Venetian Harbor. There’s an outdoor pool, excellent breakfast, restaurant, gym, and parking. The setting is modern city rather than romantic Venetian Chania, but that’s part of what makes it easy with children. Taxis can reach the door, luggage is simple, buses are next door, and you don’t have to drag a stroller through Old Town lanes.

6. Vergina Beach Hotel – Agia Marina

Excellent choice for families who want a straightforward beach vacation close to Chania. The hotel sits directly on the sandy beach at Agia Marina and has a pool, restaurant, and family-friendly rooms and apartments. You’re surrounded by restaurants and shops, and Chania is easy by bus or taxi. I prefer this sort of location to an isolated resort for families who want plenty of beach time but still like going somewhere different for dinner.

7. Minoa Palace Resort – Platanias

Large upscale resort at the quieter western end of Platanias with pools, restaurants, spa facilities, family accommodation, and beach access. It strikes a nice middle ground between the more design-focused Domes Zeen and the bigger resorts around Kolymvari. You get proper resort facilities but can still walk into Platanias for restaurants and shops. Chania is close enough for an evening trip by taxi.

8. Palazzo Duca – Chania Old Town

Charming and well-priced Old Town hotel close to the Venetian Harbor. The larger suites sleep families of four and include fridges or basic kitchen facilities, which makes it more useful with kids than many boutique hotels in the historic center. There is no pool and car access is limited, but the location is excellent for walking everywhere. Best for families who want to spend their days exploring Chania and West Crete rather than hanging around the hotel.

9. Suites Pandora – Chania Old Town

Atmospheric hotel in a traditional 17th-century building right in the Old Town. The larger suites sleep families of four and have kitchenettes, high ceilings, and plenty of character. The rooftop terrace has excellent views over Chania and the harbor. There is no lift, no pool, and harbor-facing rooms can pick up nighttime noise, so I like it best with older kids and families who care more about location and atmosphere than hotel facilities.

Best Chania Beaches for Families

Nea Chora

The easiest beach if you’re staying in Chania. It’s sandy, lined with tavernas, and close enough to the Old Town that you can combine swimming and sightseeing without a car. It is not West Crete’s most beautiful beach, but it is easily the most useful.

Agia Marina

One of the best beaches for families staying outside Chania. The sand is good, there are plenty of hotels and restaurants, and buses into town are frequent. It can get windy, and the sea is not always calm, but for an easy week-long beach vacation this is one of the best bases in West Crete.

Stalos

Similar to Agia Marina but quieter. The beach is broad and sandy with plenty of casual restaurants and apartment hotels nearby. Good for families who want less nightlife and a slightly slower atmosphere.

Falassarna

One of Crete’s best beaches and my favorite big beach in West Crete for families. It’s enormous, sandy, easy to reach by car, and has enough room that it handles crowds better than Elafonisi. There are tavernas and beach facilities, but it still feels much less developed than the resort coast near Chania. The western exposure means waves can get large on windy days.

Elafonisi

Famous for pale sand, turquoise water, and shallow lagoons that are great with children. The problem is crowds. In July and August, arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The drive from Chania is slow and winding, so make Elafonisi the main event of the day rather than trying to combine it with several other major sights.

Balos

The most dramatic beach scenery in West Crete but not the easiest family beach day. Boats leave from Kissamos, or you can drive the rough road on the Gramvousa Peninsula and hike down to the lagoon. I prefer the boat with younger children and the drive-and-hike option with active older kids. Either way, expect a full day.

Marathi

A very good choice with younger children, especially when the north coast is windy. Marathi is on the Akrotiri Peninsula east of Chania and has small sandy beaches, shallow water, tavernas, and a protected setting. It’s also much closer to Chania than Falassarna or Elafonisi.

Chania Family Travel Tips

How Long To Stay

Five nights is enough for Chania plus one or two beach trips. Seven nights is ideal and gives you time for Chania, several beaches, and a couple of drives into the mountains or western Crete without rushing. With 10 nights, I would consider splitting the stay between Chania and somewhere farther west rather than automatically adding Heraklion.

Do You Need a Car?

Not in Chania. A car is more nuisance than help in the Old Town, and you don’t need one for Agia Marina or Platanias if your plans are mostly beach, restaurants, and trips into Chania.

For a week in West Crete, though, I strongly recommend renting a car for part of the trip. Falassarna, Elafonisi, mountain villages, monasteries, and small beaches become much easier. If you’re staying in Chania first, pick up the car after your sightseeing days rather than paying to park it while it sits unused.

Chania Old Town With a Stroller

Doable, but not perfect. The waterfront promenade is easy, while the narrow lanes have uneven paving and occasional steps. A lightweight stroller is much easier than a large one. If you’re traveling with a baby, lots of luggage, or a big stroller, Samaria Hotel or Nea Chora makes life simpler than staying deep inside the pedestrian Old Town.

Best Day Trips With Kids

For most families I would choose Falassarna first, Elafonisi second, and Balos third. Limnoupolis Water Park is an easy break from sightseeing and only a short drive from Chania. Older children and teenagers may enjoy hiking one of West Crete’s gorges, but the full Samaria Gorge hike is a serious day and not something I’d casually add to a family itinerary.

Chania or Heraklion With Kids?

Chania for beaches, scenery, Old Town atmosphere, and a relaxed family vacation. Heraklion for Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, Cretaquarium, and easier access to central and eastern Crete. For a first one-week summer trip with kids, I prefer Chania.

Chania or Rethymno With Kids?

Both are excellent. Rethymno has a huge sandy beach right beside town and a more central location for exploring Crete. Chania has the prettier harbor and Old Town and much better access to West Crete’s famous beaches. If Falassarna, Elafonisi, and Balos are priorities, stay in Chania.

Best Time To Visit Chania With Kids

June and September are my favorite months. The weather is hot enough for swimming, everything is open, and crowds are easier than July and August. July and August are excellent for a pure beach vacation but Chania, Elafonisi, and the most popular beaches are busy. May and early October are good for sightseeing and active families, though beach weather is less dependable.

Where To Stay Without a Car

Chania Old Town, Nea Chora, Agia Marina, Stalos, and Platanias all work. My first choice is Nea Chora if you want beach plus town, and Chania Old Town if restaurants and sightseeing matter more than swimming. Don’t stay in an isolated countryside villa without a car. Crete is too big for that to be convenient.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best family hotel in Chania?

Domes Zeen Chania is my favorite. It has the facilities of a family resort but is close enough to Chania that you don’t have to choose between a beach vacation and exploring the city.

What is the best family resort in West Crete?

Euphoria Resort is the best choice if pools, a water park, kids’ activities, and all-inclusive convenience matter most. Choose Domes Zeen instead if staying close to Chania is a priority.

What is the best area of Chania for families?

Nea Chora is the best all-around choice if you want a sandy beach and Chania within walking distance. Stay in the Old Town for atmosphere and restaurants. Stay in Agia Marina or Platanias for a more traditional beach-and-pool vacation.

Is Chania Old Town good for children?

Yes, especially with older kids. Most of the historic center is pedestrian-friendly, there are endless places for snacks and ice cream, and the harbor is fun to explore in the evening. The main drawbacks are uneven paving, steps, limited hotel pools, and awkward parking.

Can you stay in Chania and walk to the beach?

Yes. Nea Chora is the best sandy beach within walking distance of the Old Town. From the western side of the harbor, expect roughly 10 to 20 minutes on foot depending on exactly where you’re staying.

Is Agia Marina or Platanias better for families?

I prefer Agia Marina for most families. It has a long sandy beach, lots of restaurants and family hotels, and a lively but manageable resort atmosphere. Platanias has more going on and is better for families with teenagers who want shops, restaurants, and evening activity.

Should families stay in Chania or at a beach resort?

For four nights or less, I would stay in or very close to Chania. For a week focused on swimming and relaxing, Agia Marina or a resort such as Domes Zeen or Euphoria makes more sense. Splitting a week between Chania and a beach resort can work, but I wouldn’t change hotels just for the sake of it.

Is West Crete good for a one-week family vacation?

Yes. One week is about right. Stay in one base and make day trips, or split the trip between Chania and the western coast. There is more than enough to fill seven days without driving across the island to Heraklion or Elounda.
