Best Places to Stay in Ravello
- Ravello is located about in the middle of the Amalfi Coast region but up in the mountains, not on the sea. From this lofty perch, most hotels here offer panoramic views over the dramatic coastline, sea, and mountains terraced with lemon groves. At its widest point, central Ravello is just under one kilometer across, and many streets are pedestrian-only, making a car unnecessary (even a bit of a hassle). Every attraction and almost all restaurants, shops, and hotels are reachable within a 5-minute walk (10 if you’re staying on the very edge of town).
- Romantic Ravello’s main attractions include the 11th-century cathedral (AKA the Duomo), which sits on a charming piazza just steps away from the other main sight, Villa Rufolo, a 13th-century gem surrounded by gardens with a viewpoint atop its tallest tower. The closest public beaches are in the town of Minori and the tiny hamlet, Castiglione, about a 15-minute drive away.
- First-time visitors to Ravello should stay in the city center to best experience its vibrant atmosphere and wander the gorgeous footpaths that connect the small cafes, galleries, and public gardens. Palazzo Avino and Caruso are the best-located hotels in Ravello.
- Although Ravello is a dream, one of the most beautiful towns on the Amalfi Coast, it’s relatively remote location in the mountains makes it a less-than-ideal home base for exploring the region by public transportation. From here, you would need to get a bus to Amalfi, then transfer to a second bus to reach most towns on the coast. Plan on staying in Ravello for a time to rest, relax, and explore the town on its own before or after staying in one of the coastal towns to enjoy the wider region.
