Where to Stay in the Marais

Why Stay in Le Marais: Historic, Trendy, & Quintessentially Parisian

Le Marais is, for many, the perfect Parisian neighborhood. It’s a captivating maze of medieval streets that survived the city’s 19th-century modernization, leaving a district full of historic character. Today, those streets are lined with grand aristocratic mansions (hôtels particuliers), the city’s best independent boutiques, contemporary art galleries, and a fantastic concentration of restaurants and bars. The neighborhood is a vibrant mix of cultures, home to the historic Jewish Quarter, a lively LGBTQ+ scene, and the magnificent Place des Vosges. I highly recommend it for shoppers, foodies, history buffs, and anyone who wants a super central, incredibly charming, and energetic base.

Best Things to Do in Le Marais

• Relax in the Place des Vosges: Arguably the most beautiful green space in Paris. It’s a perfect square of red-brick townhouses with arcaded walkways, surrounding a lovely central park. It’s a fantastic spot for a picnic or a coffee.
• Visit the Picasso Museum: Explore the world’s largest collection of Pablo Picasso’s work, housed in the magnificent Hôtel Salé, a 17th-century private mansion.
• Explore the Jewish Quarter (Pletzl): Walk down the bustling Rue des Rosiers, the heart of the historic Jewish quarter. The street is famous for its delicious falafel stands, Jewish bakeries, and Yiddish history.
• Go Shopping: This is one of the best shopping areas in Paris. The main arteries of Rue des Francs-Bourgeois and Rue Vieille du Temple are lined with excellent boutiques and concept stores. A huge plus: most shops in Le Marais are open on Sundays, which is rare in Paris.
• Discover Paris History: Visit the Carnavalet Museum, the official Museum of the History of Paris, which is housed in two stunning historic mansions. You can also visit the former home of Victor Hugo at the Maison de Victor Hugo on the Place des Vosges.
• See Modern Art at the Pompidou Centre: On the western edge of the neighborhood is this iconic “inside-out” building, home to Europe’s largest collection of modern and contemporary art.

Getting Around

• Walking: Along with Saint-Germain this is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Paris. You can spend days exploring its streets and can easily walk to Notre Dame, the Louvre, and the Latin Quarter.
• Metro: The area is very well-served by the Metro, with three key stations making it an excellent and convenient base. On the western edge, Hôtel de Ville, next to the famous BHV department store and the city hall, is a major hub on Lines 1 and 11. In the historic heart of the district, Saint-Paul is perfect for reaching the Place des Vosges and the Jewish Quarter on Rue des Rosiers. To the north, Rambuteau on Line 11 is the gateway to the trendy Haut Marais (Upper Marais) and the closest station to the Pompidou Centre. Both Hôtel de Ville and Saint-Paul are on Line 1, which is the best line for tourists, directly connecting the Louvre, Tuileries Garden, Champs-Élysées, and Arc de Triomphe.
