Best Athens Hotels with Private Pools & Plunge Pools: My Advice

Private pools are rare in central Athens. Most are attached to a top suite or penthouse, and many are small plunge pools rather than pools large enough for swimming. The Athens Riviera has far more private-pool rooms and suites.

• Book the exact room category. Look for “Private Pool,” “Plunge Pool,” “Outdoor Hot Tub,” “Terrace Jacuzzi,” or similar wording. Standard rooms at these hotels usually do not have a private pool.
• Expect a small pool in central Athens. Most are designed for cooling off, not swimming laps. The Riviera has much better options if the pool itself is important.
• I include outdoor hot tubs, but identify them clearly. A private terrace jacuzzi or whirlpool can still be a great feature, but it is not the same as a private pool.
• Ask about heating for cooler months. If you’re visiting in April, May, October, or November, confirm whether the pool is heated.
• For sightseeing, stay central. For the best private pools, stay on the Riviera. Plaka, Syntagma, Monastiraki, Makriyanni, and Psiri are much more convenient for the Acropolis and central sights. Vouliagmeni, Glyfada, Lagonissi, and Sounio are better for beaches and resort stays.

Best Central Athens Hotels with Private Pools

These are the best true hotel options in central Athens. Hotels with real private pools and plunge pools are listed alongside a few excellent hotels with private outdoor hot tubs.

• Grande Bretagne (Syntagma): Athens’ grand classic and the most prestigious hotel in the city. The Penthouse Suite has a private pool and superb city views. An extraordinary suite, with a price to match.
• Electra Palace Hotel (Plaka): One of the best central choices, with a great Plaka location, full hotel facilities, rooftop Acropolis views, and a Presidential Suite with private outdoor pool. My favorite combination of private pool and historic-center location.
• A77 Suites (Plaka): Small boutique hotel in a restored neoclassical building on Adrianou Street. The Iconic Suite has an Acropolis-view terrace with private jacuzzi. Not a swimming pool, but a beautiful setup in one of the best locations in Athens.
• Perianth Hotel (Psiri/Agia Irini Square): Stylish boutique hotel surrounded by excellent restaurants and nightlife. The huge Penthouse has a terrace and private swimming pool. One of my favorite central Athens hotels for couples.
• Divani Palace Acropolis (Makriyanni): Large, established hotel near the Acropolis Museum with private-jacuzzi options in select upper room categories. More traditional than boutique, but very convenient for the Acropolis, museum, and pedestrian promenade.
• The Newel Kolonaki (Kolonaki): Modern suites in a quiet, upscale neighborhood. The Honeymoon Suite and Penthouse Suite have private pools. Kolonaki is excellent for cafes, restaurants, and museums, though less convenient than Plaka for walking back and forth to the Acropolis.
• Bellén Athens (central Athens): Stylish newer hotel with an Acropolis Suite with Private Plunge Pool. A strong boutique alternative to the larger luxury hotels.
• Athens Dom Hotel (Monastiraki/Psiri edge): Small central hotel with a Pool Suite. Excellent location for restaurants, nightlife, and Monastiraki metro. The surrounding streets are livelier than Plaka and not my first choice for light sleepers.
• Bespoke House Athens (Metaxourgeio): Good-value small hotel with a Junior Suite with Private Pool. The neighborhood is less attractive and less first-time-friendly than Plaka, Syntagma, or Koukaki, but the metro is nearby.
• Athens 1890 Hotel & Spa (Monastiraki/Syntagma edge): Boutique hotel with outdoor hot tubs in the Attic room and Fresco 1890 room. These are hot tubs, not swimming pools, but the location is excellent.
• Gatsby Athens (Syntagma/Ermou edge): Fun boutique hotel close to Syntagma, Ermou, Plaka, and Monastiraki. The top-floor Gatsby Party Suite has a private terrace with outdoor whirlpool.
• Adia Aluma Athens (Omonia): Modern Hilton Curio Collection hotel with private-whirlpool and plunge-pool room categories. The hotel is stronger than the surrounding neighborhood, which is not my favorite area for a first visit to Athens.
• Anthology of Athens (Makriyanni): High-end hotel opposite the Temple of Olympian Zeus and close to the Acropolis Museum. The Athenian Suite and Zeus Presidential Suite have balconies with outdoor jetted tubs; the Zeus Suite also has Acropolis and temple views. These are jetted tubs, not plunge pools.

Best Central Athens Apartment-Style Stays with Private Pools or Outdoor Hot Tubs

These have less hotel service but often give you more space and a better private terrace.

• ACRON Suites & Apartments (Acropolis/Koukaki): Four penthouse apartments and suites, all with heated plunge/jacuzzi pools and large outdoor spaces. Just a couple of minutes’ walk from Acropolis metro and one of the strongest apartment-style choices on this page.
• A.P. Acropolis View Apartments (Psiri/Monastiraki): Well-located apartment-style property with private hot-tub options and Acropolis views from some terraces. Easy walk to Monastiraki, Psiri, and Plaka.
• Thea Acropolis Suites & Apartments (Acropolis/Makriyanni): Apartment-style suites with outdoor hot-tub categories and Acropolis-view terrace options. Good location for the Acropolis and museum.
• The Newel Acropolis (Acropolis/Makriyanni): Modern suite-style property near the Acropolis with private hot-tub balcony options. Best if location and a private terrace matter more than full hotel facilities.
• La Divina (Monastiraki/Psiri): Apartment-style boutique stay with terrace hot-tub options close to restaurants, bars, and Monastiraki. Lively location; not my pick for travelers looking for quiet.
• SV Acropolis Residence (Makriyanni/Acropolis): Spacious residence near the Acropolis with a private outdoor hot tub in the courtyard. Particularly useful for families and longer stays.
• Acropolis View Plunge Pool Loft (central Athens): Private apartment with Acropolis view and plunge pool/jacuzzi. Worth considering if the private pool and view matter more than hotel facilities.
• Monastik Living in Athina (Acropolis area): Modern suite-style property near the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis Museum, with private hot tubs in select units. Only two units have the hot tub.

Best Athens Riviera Hotels with Private Pools

For a real private-pool resort, the Athens Riviera is much better than central Athens. The tradeoff is simple: you gain beaches, larger pools, and resort facilities but lose the ability to walk to the Acropolis and central sights.

• Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel (Vouliagmeni): The best luxury resort near Athens and my favorite private-pool choice on the Riviera. Sea-view bungalows and bungalow suites with private infinity pools are the rooms to book. The resort also has beaches, excellent restaurants, and extensive family facilities.
• One&Only Aesthesis (Glyfada): Ultra-luxury beachfront resort with an unusually large selection of private-pool accommodations, from bungalows to one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites and villas. One of the best choices near Athens if having your own pool is a priority.
• 91 Athens Riviera, The Resort (Voula): Cabana-style resort with private plunge pools in several accommodation categories. The plunge pools are about 9 square meters, so these are proper small outdoor pools rather than hot tubs. More beach-club than classic luxury resort.
• Grand Resort Lagonissi (Lagonissi): Long-established luxury resort on a private peninsula, with numerous suites and villas with private pools. Farther from central Athens than Vouliagmeni and Glyfada, so I would treat it as a resort stay rather than a sightseeing base.
• Azur Hotel (Vouliagmeni): Smaller and much less expensive than the big Riviera resorts. The Deluxe Suite with Private Pool and Signature Deluxe Suite with Private Pool have their own swimming pools and terraces. Good location for Vouliagmeni restaurants, beaches, and Lake Vouliagmeni.
• Zeus Dolce (Vravrona/near airport): Large seaside resort near Athens Airport with several bungalow and suite categories with private pools. Too far out for a central Athens sightseeing stay, but convenient for a first or last night near the airport.
• Cape Sounio (Sounio): Excellent coastal resort near the Temple of Poseidon with private-pool suites and villas. Far too distant for daily Athens sightseeing, but a great choice for beaches, sea views, and visiting the temple.
• Somewhere Vouliagmeni (Vouliagmeni): Small upscale hotel close to Vouliagmeni’s restaurants and beaches. The Grand Rooftop Penthouse has a private outdoor jacuzzi. Choose this over the large resorts if you want a smaller hotel and walkable neighborhood.

Which hotel in central Athens has the best private pool?

Electra Palace Hotel is my favorite combination of a true private outdoor pool and Plaka location. Perianth Hotel is my favorite boutique option, with a private swimming pool in its Penthouse. Grande Bretagne is the most luxurious, but its private pool is in the very expensive Penthouse Suite.

Are private pools common in Athens hotels?

No. In central Athens they are usually limited to one or two top suites or apartment-style properties. Private pools are much more common at resorts on the Athens Riviera.

What is the difference between a private pool and a plunge pool?

A plunge pool is small and designed mainly for cooling off and relaxing rather than swimming. In central Athens, many rooms advertised with a private pool have a plunge pool. Outdoor jacuzzis and whirlpools are smaller still, and I identify those separately above.
