Athens Hotels with Rooftop Pools: My Advice

A rooftop pool is one of the best hotel features in Athens, especially after a hot day at the Acropolis. But not all rooftop pools are equal. Some have direct Acropolis views, while others face Lycabettus Hill or the city. And many are small pools meant for cooling off rather than swimming laps.

• Most rooftop pools are seasonal. Summer is the safest bet, but opening dates vary by hotel and weather. If the pool is important and you’re traveling in spring or fall, confirm that it will be open.
• Pool access is usually for hotel guests only. Rooftop bars and restaurants are more likely to welcome non-guests.
• Most central Athens rooftop pools are small. The attraction is the view and setting, not serious swimming.
• Check where the pool faces. A hotel can have a fantastic Acropolis-view rooftop restaurant while its pool faces another direction.
• Book early for June through September. The best hotels with rooftop pools and Acropolis views sell out early.

Best Athens Hotels with Rooftop Pools

• 1. The Dolli (Monastiraki/Plaka border): The best rooftop pool in Athens. The small infinity pool faces straight toward the Acropolis, with the Parthenon feeling remarkably close. The pool is heated, weather permitting. Very expensive, but nothing else in Athens quite matches the pool and view.
• 2. Electra Palace Hotel (Plaka): My favorite combination of rooftop pool, Acropolis view, and Plaka location. The outdoor pool is seasonal and reserved for hotel guests, with a direct view of the Acropolis. Traditional rather than trendy, and an easy recommendation for a first trip to Athens.
• 3. Electra Metropolis (Syntagma): Excellent modern hotel between Syntagma Square and Monastiraki. The 10th-floor outdoor pool has views toward both the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill, and the rooftop restaurant has one of the better Acropolis views in central Athens. A little less atmospheric than Electra Palace, but with newer rooms and an extremely convenient location.
• 4. Grande Bretagne (Syntagma): My favorite hotel in Athens and the city’s grand classic. The rooftop restaurant has superb views of the Acropolis, Parliament, and Lycabettus Hill. The outdoor pool is on the 7th floor and is more about relaxing above the city than getting a close-up Parthenon view. Stay here for the hotel, service, and location. The rooftop pool is a bonus.

• 5. Athens Capital Center Hotel – MGallery (Syntagma/Kolonaki): Modern 5-star hotel just off Syntagma Square, with a rooftop pool and views toward the Acropolis and across Athens. Excellent location for shopping, museums, Kolonaki, taxis, and the airport metro. A good alternative to Grande Bretagne if you prefer a newer hotel.
• 6. The Stanley (Metaxourgeio): The best-value rooftop pool hotel in Athens. The rooftop terrace is large by central Athens standards, the pool is more useful than most, and there are wide views across the city toward the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill. The downside is Metaxourgeio, which isn’t nearly as attractive for visitors as Plaka, Syntagma, or Monastiraki. The metro station is right outside.
• 7. Fresh Hotel (Central Market/Omonia edge): Good-value design hotel with a seasonal rooftop pool and views toward the Acropolis. I like the hotel more than the immediate neighborhood, which is busy, gritty, and not especially attractive. Good value if a pool matters more than staying in Plaka or Syntagma.
• 8. Wyndham Grand Athens (Metaxourgeio): Large modern hotel with a rooftop pool and panoramic city views, including the Acropolis from parts of the rooftop. The Stanley has the better pool area, but the Wyndham has more of a full-service business-hotel setup. Good rates are common compared with similarly equipped hotels around Syntagma and Plaka.
• 9. President Hotel (Ampelokipoi): Farther from the historic center, but notable for its high rooftop pool and broad views across Athens. The pool is open seasonally, typically May through October, weather permitting. Not my first choice for a short first visit to Athens, but worth considering if you want a larger pool and better rates outside the tourist center.
