Poros is a relaxed and picturesque Greek island on the Saronic Gulf, sitting directly opposite the town of Galatas in the Peloponnese. Reachable via ferry from Piraeus in a little over an hour, Poros makes an especially accessible day trip or quick island getaway from Athens. Many ferries to Poros from Athens continue on to the other Argo-Saronic islands of Hydra and Spetses, making for easy and convenient island-hopping.

Hotels on Poros vary in style and level of luxury, from upscale hotels that offer exclusive amenities and services to more modest accommodations that are ideal for those seeking a simpler, more budget-friendly experience. It’s important to note, however, that luxury accommodations on laid-back Poros do not offer the same level of opulence or grandeur as can be found on some of the more famous Greek islands like Mykonos or Santorini. Instead, the luxury here is often about the quality of service, the charm of the surroundings, and the peaceful ambiance.

Staying on Poros

Although generally thought of as one island, Poros actually comprises two islands: Sferia and Kalavria, which are separated by a bridge over a narrow strait.

Poros Town
Sferia is the smaller of the two islands, and is where the port and main town of Poros (Poros Town) are located. Poros Town is urban-feeling and lively, with charming cafés and shops along the vibrant waterfront providing visitors with a taste of traditional Greek island life mixed with a touch of modernity. Fishing boats, sailboats, and pleasure yachts line the busy harbor, which also serves ferry boats and water taxis (5 minutes, €1) that transport passengers between Poros and the town of Galatas, just across the way on the mainland.

Poros Town doesn’t offer a lot in the way of attractions. Mostly it’s just sort of laid-back and lovely, drawing a crowd of wind-weathered sailboaters & well-to-do yachters who park themselves along its picturesque port promenade to enjoy beautiful sunsets and great restaurants. The town rises steeply from the seafront, crowned by a landmark blue and white clock tower. There’s a small but interesting archaeological museum to explore here, as well as one dedicated to island culture and folklore. On summer nights, the Cine Diana open-air rooftop cinema screens English-language movies subtitled in Greek, and is popular with locals and visitors alike.

Kalavria
Across a narrow channel north of Poros Town, pine-blanketed Kalavria is a significantly larger and more tranquil island than Sferia, and is known for its lush greenery and beautiful beaches. This part of Poros is ideal for those seeking to immerse themselves in nature, with opportunities for hiking and exploring historical sites. The archaeological ruins of the Temple of Poseidon, an ancient Greek temple built around 520 BC, is one of Kalavria’s most notable landmarks.

The vast majority of Kalavria is rustic and pine-covered, but a string of good beaches can be found along its southern coast: Monastiri, Askeli, Kanali, Limanaki tis Agapis (Love Bay), and the Russian Dockyard. Of these, Kanali Beach is the most easily accessible from Poros Town, a level 20-minute walk from the port.
