• Best Beaches in SkiathosSkiathos is situated in the Sporades – a cluster of 24 islands off the east coast of mainland Greece in the northwest Aegean Sea. The most cosmopolitan island in the Sporades, Skiathos is hilly and lush, heavily forested with pine, oak, and olive trees.
Skiathos has impressive and pristine beaches, a lively town center in Skiathos Town, and an international airport conveniently located just two kilometers from the main town. The Bourtzi, a pine-treed peninsula, sits along Skiathos Town’s picturesque harborfront and is a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll featuring a naval museum, a café, and wonderful views of town.

The island’s south coast is home to luxurious hotels and organized beaches with tavernas and bars. Skiathos has an excellent public bus system that provides frequent service along its touristy south coast. The northern part of the island is rugged and uninhabited, with walking trails, the island’s four monasteries, and many wild and remote beaches that are accessible only by boat.
Koukounaries is the best beach on Skiathos, located a 20-minute drive from Skiathos Town. There are no hotels directly on Koukounaries Beach but there are many within walking distance, such as the wonderful Mandraki Village Boutique Hotel and Elivi.
A fun way to explore is by doing a boat tour around the island with swim and snorkel opportunities at the best spots, like Lalaria Beach and Tsougrias Island. (Go to the harbor in Skiathos Town to find tour boats).
Getting To and Around Skiathos
Skiathos has a modern international airport (JSI) serving regular direct flights to Skiathos from Athens, the UK, and major cities in Europe in the summer months. From mainland Greece, ferries depart from Volos, Thessaloniki, and Agios Konstantinos. Skiathos is also connected by ferry to Skopelos and Alonnisos.
The island is small at just 12 km (7 miles) long and 6 km (3 miles) wide, and is easy to navigate by car. The major roads are paved and in good condition. Bus service on the island’s touristy south coast is impressive, with frequent service throughout the day and evening. Bus stops are conveniently numbered from 0 to 26; Bus stop 0 is in Skiathos Town on the east coast, and service ends at stop 26 on the west coast at Koukounaries, the island’s most famous beach.

Ferries to Skiathos
We’re planning to visit Skiathos this June/July, driving down from Bulgaria. Currently I can find only one ferry leaving on Saturday from Volos 10am, which isn’t ideal with our schedule (would prefer an afternoon option, it’s a 5.5 hr drive to Volos). Do you know if the schedule is likely to grow as we near summer, or should we start planning to stay a night in Volos?
Thanks so much!
Yes, there should be more options with Hellenic (morning and afternoon) or Aegean Flying Dolphins (usually 2pm). There should also be ferries from Agios Konstantinos to Skiathos departing in the early evening (though perhaps not every day).
Hello
What is the best mode of transport to get to Skiathos from Athens. I note that the flights are intermittent on certain days.
Flying is the easiest way to get from Athens to Skiathos (especially if you’re already at the airport). But if you’re in the city then I’d opt for bus and ferry as long as you can get on a bus before 1pm. Otherwise you risk missing the last ferry and spending the night in Agios Konstantinos. Bus and ferry take about 5.5 to 6 hours from Athens to Skiathos. The flights is 30 minutes.
We are staying in Skiathos Town for a 5 day holiday from London. Our itinerary includes one day touring the monasteries, one day on a boat tour of the northern beaches, one day on a day trip to Skopelos, and one day to shop and relax. That leaves one day for the beaches along the south coast. What are your favorite beaches in Skiathos that we should visit?
Thanks
Lucy
If you can only visit one beach on Skiathos make it Koukounaries Beach. Other good ones: Agia Paraskevi Beach, Vassilias Beach, and Troulos.
