The City is a bustling, commercial and financial hub in London’s East End. It incorporates some of the world’s best-known banks and financial institutions, great shopping, stylish cafes and restaurants, hip luxury hotels, and a blend of modern and traditional architecture.

Must-see attractions in The City include The Gherkin, Monument to the Great Fire of London, the Tower of London (just outside the true boundaries of The City), and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

If you wish to delve into London’s history, the Museum of London, Bank of England Museum, and London Mithraeum (showcasing the city’s Roman heritage) are all located in “The City”.

For dining, you’ll find chic cocktail bars and upscale eateries incorporating Modern European, British, Turkish, Asian, and American food. There are also deli’s, bakeries, and chocolatiers.

Hotels in The City of London are predominantly midrange to luxury. Airbnb also offers a selection of Bed & Breakfasts, spacious rooms, and apartments in the neighborhood.

The City is a vast area to navigate on foot, however, regular buses operate along main routes and there are several underground stations. Pick up an Oyster Card at a local newsagent or any tube station, and you can travel all day on buses and the underground for a fixed price. In addition, tourist boats sail up and down the River Thames all day and you can hop on/off as you choose.

If you’re flying in and out of Gatwick Airport, you can take the Circle or District line from Tower Hill, Monument, or Cannon Street Underground Stations direct to Victoria station for the Gatwick Express train.

To reach Heathrow Airport, travel to Paddington Station from Aldgate or Liverpool Street on the Hammersmith and City or Circle Lines. If you’re planning a quick jaunt over to Paris or Amsterdam during your stay, King’s Cross/St Pancras train station can also be reached via the same underground lines.
