Heathrow Hotels – My Advice

My room at Sofitel Heathrow Hotel.

Our room at the Sofitel Heathrow in Terminal 5. Super convenient.

  • The Golden Rule of Heathrow Hotels: Heathrow is massive. Moving between terminals can take 30+ minutes. Always try to book a hotel connected to the specific terminal you are flying into or out of. If you must stay at a different terminal, use the free trains (Heathrow Express or Elizabeth Line) to transfer between them.
  • Terminal 5 (British Airways Hub):
    • Sofitel London Heathrow: This is the best hotel at the airport, period. It is directly connected to Terminal 5 via a covered walkway. It’s luxury, quiet, and effortless.
    • Thistle London Heathrow T5: Not connected to the terminal (you need to take the “POD” driverless car system, which costs roughly £8 per person). It overlooks the runway, which is great for plane spotting, but it’s older.
  • Terminal 4 (The “Hotel Hub”): Terminal 4 has a covered walkway connecting it to four excellent hotels. It is often the best value area to stay, even if flying from other terminals (just take the free train transfer).
  • Terminals 2 & 3 (The Central Area):
    • Hilton Garden Inn T2/3: The only hotel connected to Terminal 2. You can walk straight from the Queen’s Terminal to the lobby.
    • Aerotel T3: Located inside the arrival hall of Terminal 3. It offers hourly bookings – ideal for showers and naps during layovers.
  • Getting to Central London (3 Options):
    • Heathrow Express: The fastest way. Non-stop to Paddington Station in 15 minutes. It’s expensive, but worth it.
    • The Elizabeth Line: Much cheaper than the Express, has air-conditioning (unlike the Tube), and gets you to central London (Paddington, Bond St, Tottenham Court Rd, Liverpool St) in about 30-40 minutes.
    • Piccadilly Line (Tube): The cheapest and slowest option (50-60 mins to central London). Great if you are staying near Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden, or South Kensington and want to save money.
  • Sightseeing on a Layover: Staying at Heathrow gives you surprisingly easy access to Windsor Castle. It is a 15-20 minute taxi ride from T5. If you have a layover of 6+ hours, you can easily visit the castle and be back in time. Runnymede (Magna Carta site) and Kew Gardens are also nearby.
