Heathrow Hotels – My Advice

My room at Sofitel Heathrow Hotel.

Our room at the Sofitel Heathrow in Terminal 5. Super convenient.

  • The Golden Rule of Heathrow Hotels: Heathrow is massive, so changing terminals can be slow and annoying once you factor in walking, waiting, and luggage. I recommend staying at or near the terminal you’re using whenever possible. If you stay at a different terminal, use Heathrow’s free inter-terminal rail transfers: the Elizabeth line runs free between Terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5, and the Heathrow Express runs free between Terminals 2, 3, and 5.

Terminal 5 (British Airways Hub)

  • Sofitel London Heathrow: In my opinion, this is the best hotel at the airport. It connects directly to Terminal 5 via a covered walkway. It is luxurious, quiet, and makes travel effortless.
  • Thistle London Heathrow T5: This hotel is not connected to the terminal. You must take the POD driverless car system, which costs roughly £8 per person. It is an older property but offers great runway views for plane spotting.

Terminal 4 (The Hotel Hub)

  • Terminal 4 has a covered walkway connecting to four excellent hotels. This area provides the best value, even if you are flying from other terminals. Just use the free train transfer to reach the other terminals.
  • Premier Inn T4: This is the best budget option at Heathrow. It is clean, reliable, and typically the most affordable choice.
  • Holiday Inn Express T4: A solid mid-range choice that includes free breakfast for all guests.
  • Crowne Plaza T4: An upscale and very comfortable hotel for those wanting more amenities.
  • Hilton Heathrow T4: A classic full-service hotel featuring a pool and gym. It connects via a slightly longer glass tunnel walkway.

Terminals 2 & 3 (The Central Area)

  • Hilton Garden Inn T2/3: This is the only hotel connected to Terminal 2. I like that you can walk straight from the Queen’s Terminal into the lobby.
  • Aerotel T3: Located inside the arrival hall of Terminal 3. It offers hourly bookings, which I find ideal for showers and naps during long layovers.

Getting to Central London

  • Heathrow Express: This is the fastest way to the city. It runs non-stop to Paddington Station in 15 minutes. It is the most expensive option, but the speed is hard to beat.
  • The Elizabeth Line: This is my preferred balance of cost and comfort. It is much cheaper than the Express and has air conditioning. It reaches central London stations like Paddington, Bond Street, and Liverpool Street in about 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Piccadilly Line (Tube): The cheapest but slowest option. It takes 50 to 60 minutes to reach central London. Use this if you are staying near Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden, or South Kensington and want to save money.

Sightseeing on a Layover

  • Staying at Heathrow provides easy access to Windsor Castle. It is only a 15 to 20 minute taxi ride from Terminal 5. If you have a layover of 6 hours or more, I definitely recommend visiting the castle. Other nearby sites include Runnymede (the site of the Magna Carta) and Kew Gardens.
