Where to Stay in Monti

The Roman Forum near Monti.

The Roman Forum on our late afternoon visit.

A Guide to Staying in Monti

Monti, along with the adjacent Celio hill, is easily one of my favorite areas in Rome. It has a perfect dual personality: on one hand, you are literally staying amidst the monumental ruins of Ancient Rome; on the other, you are in a hip, bohemian village filled with ivy-clad buildings, artisan workshops, and cool little bars. The cobblestone streets of Monti, especially around the main Piazza della Madonna dei Monti, come alive in the evenings with locals enjoying an aperitivo, while Celio offers a slightly quieter, greener atmosphere. For travelers who want a central location with authentic character that feels worlds away from the tourist crowds of Trevi, this combined area is the perfect choice.

Rome Hotels for Families and Where to Stay in Rome

Best Things to Do in Monti
• Explore Ancient Rome: This is Monti’s biggest draw. You are steps away from the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Imperial Fora of Trajan and Augustus. You can wake up and be the first in line at the city’s most important ancient sites.

• Wander the “Urban Village”: The heart of modern Monti is a maze of charming streets. I recommend exploring Via dei Serpenti, Via del Boschetto, and Via Panisperna, which are lined with independent fashion boutiques, vintage stores, and artisan workshops.

• Have a Drink in the Piazza: The Piazza della Madonna dei Monti is the neighborhood’s living room. Grab a seat at an outdoor table in the early evening, order a spritz or a glass of wine, and watch the world go by.

• Discover Hidden Churches: Monti is home to some incredible churches. Don’t miss the Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli to see Michelangelo’s powerful statue of Moses, or the magnificent Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore on the neighborhood’s northern edge.

Getting Around Monti
• Walking: This is a walker’s paradise. From Monti, you can easily walk to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon.

• Metro: The neighborhood is served by two main stations: Cavour (Line B), which is in the heart of the residential part of Monti, and Colosseo (Line B), right at the entrance to the Colosseum and Forum. This makes getting to Termini Station (2 stops away) or the Vatican area (with a change to Line A) relatively easy.
