This landmark open-air market has been operating on the same site for almost 1000 (since 1097 A.D.) and consists of two sections, the pescaria (seafood market) and the erberia (fruit and vegetable market). The original market building burned down in the early 16th century and was replaced by a neo-Gothic pavilion in the 17th century that still stands today. The full market is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from about 7:30 a.m. to about 1:00 p.m.; on Mondays only the produce market is open. Arrive close to opening time to see the fishermen arriving on their boats to sell fish, eel, octopus, and more to the market vendors.
