Staying At or Near Schiphol Airport
I’ve stayed at Amsterdam Schiphol more than any other airport, and it’s one of the easiest airports for an overnight stay. The Sheraton, Hilton, and citizenM are all within an easy walk of the terminal. For a very early departure or late arrival, I would choose one of these rather than depend on a shuttle, taxi, or early-morning train.
Sheraton, Hilton, and citizenM are landside and reached from Schiphol Plaza. Mercure and YOTELAIR are after security, so access depends on your flight, baggage, and which secure area you’re traveling through.
Follow the airport-hotel signs from the arrivals halls and train station. The Sheraton and Hilton are reached by covered walkways without needing a hotel shuttle. citizenM is about a 5-minute walk from the terminal.
Should You Stay at Schiphol Airport?
If your flight leaves before about 8:00 AM, I prefer staying at Schiphol. The Sheraton is the easiest choice because you can walk from the hotel into the terminal without relying on a shuttle, train, or taxi. The Hilton is nearly as convenient and has better facilities, while citizenM is my favorite if you want to spend less.
For a later morning or afternoon flight, I would stay in Amsterdam unless you have another reason to sleep near the airport. Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal to Schiphol take about 17 minutes, so moving to an airport hotel for your final night is unnecessary for most later departures. art’otel Amsterdam is directly across from Centraal Station and my favorite choice for combining a final night in central Amsterdam with an easy trip to the airport the next day.
Landside vs Airside Hotels at Schiphol
Landside Hotels: The Sheraton, Hilton, and citizenM are outside airport security. Anyone can stay at these hotels, making them the best choices if you’re arriving in Amsterdam, checking luggage, starting your trip at Schiphol the next morning, or simply want the easiest overnight stay.
Airside Hotels: The Mercure and YOTELAIR are inside Schiphol’s secure passenger area. They are most useful for eligible connecting passengers and some early departures, but access depends on your flight and baggage situation. Do not book either simply because it appears closer to the gates. Check that you will be able to access the hotel with your itinerary and luggage before booking.
The Best Hotels at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
1. Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol – Best Overall
• My favorite Schiphol airport hotel and the easiest choice for an early flight, late arrival, or one-night layover.
• Directly connected to the terminal and train station by a covered walkway, with no shuttle or outdoor walk required.
• Comfortable, soundproofed rooms, including larger rooms and suites for travelers who want more space.
• Several places to eat and drink, plus easy access to all the restaurants and shops inside Schiphol.
• Fitness center, sauna, 24-hour front desk, room service, and on-site parking.
• Usually worth paying a little more for than a shuttle hotel if you have a very early departure.2. Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol – Best Luxury
• The best choice if you want a full-service luxury hotel rather than simply the closest bed to the terminal.
• About a 5 to 7-minute walk from Schiphol through a covered walkway.
• Large, quiet rooms with family and connecting rooms available.
• Excellent atrium restaurant and bar, Executive Lounge, spa, and 24-hour fitness center.
• Better facilities and more of a hotel experience than the Sheraton, but the Sheraton has the edge for pure convenience.
• A particularly good choice for families or anyone spending more than a quick overnight at the airport.3. citizenM Schiphol Airport – Best Value Within Walking Distance
• My favorite value choice among the hotels within walking distance of Schiphol.
• About a 5-minute walk from the terminal, with no need for a shuttle.
• Rooms are small but cleverly designed, quiet, and comfortable, with king beds and blackout shades.
• Large common areas and a 24-hour food and drink service make it better for a short overnight than the compact rooms suggest.
• Best for couples and solo travelers. Families and travelers wanting more space are better off at the Hilton or Sheraton.
• Choose citizenM when the Sheraton and Hilton are significantly more expensive.4. Mercure Hotel Schiphol Terminal – Best Airside Hotel
• Located after security in Lounge 3 and designed primarily for passengers who are already inside Schiphol’s secure departure area.
• Excellent for an eligible overnight connection because you don’t need to leave the secure part of the airport.
• Private rooms with ensuite bathrooms and blackout curtains are available for overnight and day use.
• Access restrictions apply. You’ll need an eligible same-day or next-day flight, and the hotel is intended for travelers with hand baggage rather than checked luggage.
• Check that the hotel works with your flight, baggage, and airport route before booking. For a normal early-morning departure from Amsterdam, I prefer the landside Sheraton, Hilton, or citizenM.5. YOTELAIR Amsterdam Schiphol Transit Hotel – Best Budget Airside Hotel
• Compact transit hotel after security in Lounge 2.
• Small private cabins with ensuite showers make it a good choice when you mainly want a bed and shower during a connection.
• Cabins can be booked for shorter stays as well as overnight, making YOTELAIR particularly useful during a long layover.
• Open 24 hours, with snacks and drinks available.
• As with the Mercure, make sure your flight and baggage situation allow you to reach the hotel before booking.
• For travelers beginning their trip at Schiphol rather than connecting through the airport, one of the landside hotels is normally easier.Cheaper Hotels Near Schiphol Airport
The walkable airport hotels are extremely convenient, but they can be expensive. If the savings are significant, several nearby hotels make good alternatives.
Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport is my favorite off-airport option, with large modern rooms and a free scheduled airport shuttle. It’s a good choice for families or travelers who want more space without paying Hilton prices.
ibis Schiphol Amsterdam Airport is a straightforward, good-value airport hotel with a free shuttle to and from Schiphol. Choose it when price matters more than being able to walk to the terminal.
Novotel Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is beside Hoofddorp station rather than directly at the airport. Hoofddorp is one short train ride from Schiphol, making the Novotel a good alternative when airport hotels are expensive.
For a flight before about 8:00 AM, I would still pay more for the Sheraton, Hilton, or citizenM unless the price difference is substantial. Walking directly to the terminal is much easier than planning around a hotel shuttle or train.
Staying in Amsterdam Instead of at the Airport
Schiphol has one of Europe’s easiest airport-to-city train connections, so there’s no need to spend your final night at the airport just because you’re flying the next morning. Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal to Schiphol take about 17 minutes and run frequently through most of the day.
For a later morning or afternoon departure, I would stay in central Amsterdam and enjoy the final evening in the city. art’otel Amsterdam is my favorite hotel for this: it’s directly across from Centraal Station, with restaurants, bars, and the historic center within an easy walk.
For a very early departure, late-night arrival, or short overnight connection, stay at Schiphol. For almost everything else, stay in Amsterdam.
