What is an Agriturismo?

Best Agriturismo Farm Stays in Tuscany with Swimming Pool

  • An agriturismo is a type of accommodation in Italy (most often in Tuscany, Umbria, and Sicily) where a working farm has converted some of the rooms in the farmhouses into guest rooms. To be a true agriturismo the farm must earn more money from agricultural activities than room rentals and guests must be served items (olive oil, wine, fruit, vegetables) grown on the farm. The focus is often on local produce, regional dishes, and seasonal food in a rural and picturesque setting. Places that do not strictly fall into this category of lodging are usually called B&Bs or farmhouse rentals.
  • Staying at an Tuscan farmhouse or agriturismo is one of the highlights of a trip to Tuscany. If you have the time you should definitely make the effort.
  • Booking.com – The best site for booking an agriturismo in Tuscany. (Good rates and the best selection.)
  • Accommodations range from simple rooms to luxury villas. Most include breakfast, many provide lunch and some also offer dinner (for a fee).
  • Many agriturismo, but not all, have minimum stays (3 to 7 nights).
  • Agriturismo vacations have become incredibly popular so plan on booking 4 to 6 months in advance. Even longer if booking a luxury agriturimso in Tuscany or if visiting in May, June, July, August, or September.
  • Renting a car in Florence is the easiest way to get to most agriturismo farm.
  • Popular options: An agriturismo with a swimming pool is great for kids. Many agriturismo offer cooking classes (highly recommended). Often, an agriturismo provide breakfast and dinner so a kitchen is convenient for preparing snacks and light lunch. Most of the apartments listed below come with a full kitchen.
  • Best Agriturismo in Tuscany: Agriturismo Casale Dello Sparviero – Breathtaking location, idyllic setting.
  • Best Agriturismo near Florence: Castello Di Gabbiano (Chianti region)
  • Best Agriturismo near Siena: Villa Agostoli
  • Best Agriturismo near Lucca: Agriturismo La Conte

  1. Italy Agriturismo for Vegans

    Hi Dave,

Do you know if there are any vegan themed agriturismos that you recommend? Or are there any that have vegan options? My wife and I are vegan and we would like to stay in an agriturismo.

Also, we were thinking of a stay in early October. Do you think this would be a great time to go? And finally, by that time, our baby will be 18 months old. Do you think an agriturismo is appropriate for an 18 month old and two young parents? If yes, perhaps you can recommend one that checks all the boxes.

    I appreciate it :)

    1. Santorini Dave The Hotel Expert

I do not have any specific recommendations but I do not think it would be a problem at most Agriturismo. But you will need to check and send emails to enquire. Some places offer set meals and it’s possible that they wouldn’t be able to accommodate specific diets. And yes, I think an Agriturismo is fine with a toddler.

  2. Italy Agriturismo in Winter

We are a family of 5 (3 teens) from Singapore. Is mid-December a good time to do an agriturismo stay? What are the outdoor activities available? Horse riding? Someone told me that there is nothing to see in Winter and since the daylight is short, there is nothing much to do.

    1. Santorini Dave The Hotel Expert

Weather can be hard to predict in December. It can be quite nice. It can be grey and rainy. But unless you have a large storm moving through I think you’ll find plenty to do. If you’re really worried about it then choose an agriturismo that is close to a significant town.

  3. Best Time for Agriturismo Visit

HI, my girlfriend and I are traveling to Tuscany at the end of March for 10 days. We are booked 3 day in Florence and looking to go to Sienna, Lucca, and Cinque Terre, possibly San Gimignano. Is an agriturismo a good place to stay in late March, as it’s probably quite cold. Somehow it seems that being on a farm at that time of year won’t afford us the outdoor beauty of being outside to enjoy what the farm has to offer in warmer months.
    Any suggestions are very welcome!
    Gracie Mille!

    1. Santorini Dave The Hotel Expert

Weather is variable in March so you’re wise in expecting/preparing for anything but most years I think a March visit will be great. Countryside is green and farms busy with work. I would be more concerned with the Cinque Terre in March than an Agriturismo – paths between the villages are sometimes washed out due to winter rains and boats between coastal towns don’t start until April 1 (usually). When it’s cold and rainy on an Agriturismo you can usually find something interesting to do (cooking classes are great) but in the Cinque Terre it can feel sorta miserable.

  4. Agriturismo for Family of 4

    HI,

We’re going in April with my kids 10 and 13 – would love something with animals and have the ability to do a cooking class. Ideas?
    Jessica Sweedler

Poggio Tre Lune would be perfect but no animals (besides a few cats and dogs). I can’t think of any Agriturismo where farm animals play an integral role. The orientation is more agricultural than farm animal.

  5. Tuscany Farmhouse for Holiday

I’ve been to Tuscany last summer, a great, unique place. I visited San Gimignano, they are beautiful landscapes and the historic center is very nice and the people are very friendly. I stayed at the Raccianello Farmhouse, I recommend going there, a very nice place to relax and enjoy the holiday.

Wow. Looks great. Thanks for the tip.

  6. Agriturismo near Florence with Cooking Class

    Hi Dave,
Looking for a farmstay north of Florence, maybe Bologna (?) for early June. Ideally one that offers cooking classes or other food/wine or outdoor related activities on the farm. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Amber

    1. Santorini Dave The Hotel Expert

Poggio Tre Lune is an agriturismo near Florence, beautiful, and has cooking courses put on by the owners.

  7. Agriturismo in Tuscany

We are looking for the ‘right’ place for 7 nights in April in Tuscany Agriturismo for ‘luna di miele’ and there seem to be so many wonderful places – trying to narrow down best place for location, accessibility to the local sites/wineries, towns and allow one to immerse in the Tuscan culture…

You’re right, there are many. The good news is that most are very high quality (I’ve never heard of someone having a bad experience – I’m sure it does happen but it’s rare). I find the ratings on Booking.com/farm-stays are a very good signal for quality. A rating of 8.0 or above consistently means it’s good. 9.0 or above and it’s usually great.

  8. Agriturismo Villa near Florence with Cooking Class

The villas you’ve listed look wonderful but most are fully booked for our dates in early September. Can you recommend a Agriturismo that is beautiful and offers cooking classes for a family? Also need a swimming pool, preferably, and within a short drive of Florence.

    1. Santorini Dave The Hotel Expert

The Poggio Tre Lune agriturismo/farmhouse is beautiful and run by a very friendly family. Nice pool and they do cooking courses where you’ll make some delicious food. Located close to Florence. September is still high season for agriturismos so I can’t promise they’ll have availability for your dates, but otherwise this ticks all your boxes.
