Elounda is a wonderful place to stay for all types of travelers: first-timers, honeymooners, couples, and families.
Staying in Elounda – My Tips
- Home to Crete’s most opulent beachfront resorts, Elounda is a favorite among Greek celebrities, foreign royalty, and well-heeled international travelers. Many of these resorts offer extensive half-board or “dine-around” packages, allowing guests to sample multiple high-end restaurants across sister properties.
- The Elounda area is a five-kilometer string of villages stretching from Plaka in the north to Schisma Eloundas (the main Elounda village) in the south. Most luxury resorts are clustered along the coast outside the village centers, offering more privacy and expansive grounds.
- Natural beaches here are typically pebbly. The best public sandy beach is Paralia Schisma Eloundas in the village center. For snorkeling, head to Dianiskari Beach; it is difficult to reach via a rough dirt road, but the water is crystal clear. The manicured white sand beaches at the top resorts are largely manmade and reserved for hotel guests.
- The geography is unique. Spinalonga Island and the Spinalonga Peninsula run parallel to the mainland, creating the Gulf of Korfos. This makes the water exceptionally calm and lake-like. Hotels located between Plaka and Elounda village enjoy the most sheltered waters, while those south of the village face the slightly more open Mirabello Bay.
- A visit to Spinalonga Island is essential. This 16th-century Venetian fortress served as one of Europe’s last leper colonies until 1959. Boats depart every 30 minutes from Elounda village (a 20 to 25-minute trip) and every 15 minutes from Plaka (a 7 to 10-minute trip). Arrive before 10:00 am to beat the large tour buses coming from Heraklio.
- For authentic Cretan dining away from the resorts, head to the village of Plaka. It has a row of excellent fish tavernas overlooking the water with direct views of Spinalonga. Elounda village also has a lively waterfront lined with cafes and shops that stay active well into the evening.
- If you want to explore the wider region, a rental car is recommended. While taxis are available, they can be expensive for longer trips. Having your own car allows for easy day trips to the Lasithi Plateau or the nearby town of Agios Nikolaos, which is only a 15-minute drive away.
- What is the best month to visit Elounda? June and September offer the best balance of warm sea temperatures and manageable crowds.
- Elounda or Agios Nikolaos? Elounda is better for secluded luxury and private beaches; Agios Nikolaos is better for walking to local shops and nightlife.
