Staying in Heraklion.

Many of the best hotels and places to stay in Heraklio (for first-time visitors) are located in the small walkable area between the ferry port, marina, and Archaeological Museum.

Staying in Heraklion: My Tips

  • Heraklion is the most practical city in Crete. It is not as pretty as Chania or Rethymno, and it is not a beach resort. But it is the best base for Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, ferries, airport convenience, food, nightlife, and central Crete day trips. I like Heraklion most for 1 or 2 nights at the start or end of a trip, or for travelers who want a real Cretan city rather than a postcard town.
  • Stay inside or just beside the Venetian Walls. This is the best area for most visitors. The Archaeological Museum, Koules Fortress, the ferry port, Lion Square, 25th of August Street, the Venetian Loggia, and many of the best restaurants are within a short walk. You do not need a car if you are staying in the center.
  • Heraklion is not a beach town. There are no good swimming beaches in the city center. If you want a beach stay near Heraklion, look at Ammoudara Beach, about 15 minutes west by taxi or bus. The Enorme Teatro is the best hotel on the strip, but it is an Adults Only (16+) property. Stay in the city for history and food; stay in Ammoudara for beach time.
  • For early ferries, stay near the port. If your ferry leaves at 7:00 AM or 8:00 AM, choose GDM Megaron or Lato Boutique Hotel. Both are close to the port entrance and make early departures much less stressful. I would not stay out at Ammoudara the night before an early ferry.
  • Heraklion is excellent for food. Chania has the prettier harbor, but Heraklion has a strong local dining scene that runs year-round. Try bougatsa near Lion Square, book ahead for Peskesi, and leave time for coffee, meze, wine bars, and late dinners in the pedestrian center. Crete is the European Region of Gastronomy for 2026, and Heraklion is one of the best places to feel that beyond the hotel restaurants.
  • Do not bring a car into the center unless your hotel has parking. Driving inside the walls is frustrating, with narrow streets, one-way systems, pedestrian zones, and limited parking. If you have a rental car, use a hotel with parking or leave it in a lot near the port or walls and walk. Heraklion is much easier on foot.
  • Book Knossos smartly. Knossos is the top sight near Heraklion and gets hot, crowded, and busy with groups. Book tickets in advance when possible, go early, and pair it with the Archaeological Museum for the full Minoan story. If you only visit one ancient site in Crete, make it Knossos plus the museum.
  • Heraklion works well without a car. The airport, port, bus station, museum, fortress, and center are all close together by Crete standards. Buses and taxis are easy for Knossos, Ammoudara, and onward travel to Rethymno, Chania, Agios Nikolaos, and eastern Crete. Rent a car only if you are doing wineries, Archanes, Phaistos, Matala, or deeper inland exploring.

The 8 Best Hotels in Heraklion

1. GDM Megaron Hotel

Best hotel in Heraklion.
The best hotel in Heraklion for luxury, port convenience, and views. GDM Megaron is a grand five-star hotel in a restored 1920s landmark building overlooking the harbor, marina, and Koules Fortress. It is the most reliable high-end choice in the city and the hotel I like best for a comfortable Heraklion stay.

The rooftop plunge pool and restaurant are big advantages, especially in warm weather, with views across the port and fortress. Rooms are polished and comfortable, and many have balconies or sea views. The location works perfectly for the ferry port, Archaeological Museum, city center, and one-night stays before or after island travel. It is more city-hotel than resort, but for Heraklion, that is exactly what you want.

2. Legacy Gastro Suites

5-star hotel in Heraklion, Crete.
The best boutique hotel in Heraklion for couples and food lovers. Legacy Gastro Suites is a small, stylish hotel near the center, with a strong food-and-wine identity and easy access to Heraklion’s restaurants, shops, and sights. It feels more personal than the larger business-style hotels and works especially well for couples.

Suites are spacious and art-inspired, with in-room food stations stocked with local products such as olive oil, honey, cheese, wine, and Cretan snacks. The hotel’s restaurant and wine focus make it a good fit for travelers who want Heraklion’s food culture at the center of the stay. It is not a resort and does not have a pool, but for a short city stay with style, it is one of Heraklion’s best options.

3. Aquila Atlantis Hotel

Pool with view in Heraklion.
The best large hotel in Heraklion for families, business travelers, and easy sightseeing. Aquila Atlantis is a polished city hotel near the Archaeological Museum and Venetian walls, with more facilities than most central Heraklion hotels. It works well for families who want space, pools, and a central location without staying in a tiny boutique property.

The hotel has two pools, including a rooftop pool with views, plus a restaurant, lounge bar, spa facilities, and rooms with city or sea views. It is not as characterful as GDM Megaron or as intimate as Legacy Gastro, but it is practical, comfortable, and very well located. If you want a central Heraklion hotel with a more full-service feel, Aquila Atlantis is a strong pick.

4. Veneziano Boutique Hotel

Best boutique hotel in Heraklion.
The best small historic hotel in Heraklion center. Veneziano Boutique Hotel is set in a beautifully restored landmark building with Venetian and Ottoman layers, close to Lion Square, the Venetian Loggia, restaurants, shops, and the pedestrian heart of the city.

Rooms and apartments are contemporary but still show off the building’s history, with stone details, high ceilings, and a charming courtyard used for breakfast and evening drinks. It is a good choice for couples and independent travelers who want atmosphere without staying in a big hotel. The downside is limited facilities: no pool, no resort feel, and fewer services than the larger hotels. For character and location, it is excellent.

5. Olive Green Hotel

Best 4-star hotel in Heraklion.
The best modern midrange hotel in Heraklion. Olive Green is a smart, eco-minded hotel in the historic center, close to the Archaeological Museum, restaurants, shopping streets, and nightlife. It is a good fit for travelers who want a clean, modern, well-run hotel rather than old-world atmosphere.

Rooms are comfortable and tech-forward, with walk-in showers and many with balconies. The 626 All Day Lounge & City Garden gives the hotel an easy cafe-bar feel that works well in a city like Heraklion. It is not the most romantic hotel in town, but it is practical, central, and good value for a 1- to 3-night stay.

6. Lato Boutique Hotel

Heraklion hotel near ferry port.
The best boutique hotel near the ferry port. Lato Boutique Hotel is one of the most convenient choices if you have an early ferry, late ferry arrival, or want easy access to Koules Fortress, the marina, and the Archaeological Museum. It sits close to the port entrance and has some of the best fortress and sea views in the city.

Rooms are comfortable and soundproofed, with city or sea views, and some suites add more space and jacuzzi baths. The rooftop restaurant is a highlight in summer. Lato is not the newest or flashiest hotel in Heraklion, but the location is hard to beat for ferry logistics. For an early boat, I would happily stay here.

7. Pavo Art Hotel

Luxury hotel in Heraklion.
The best value apartment-style hotel near Heraklion center. Pavo Art Hotel sits just outside the Venetian walls near Talos Plaza, with colorful, modern suites and a quieter feel than hotels in the middle of the city.

Studios and suites include kitchens, walk-in showers, playful decor, and private balconies in many units. It works well for families, longer stays, and travelers who want more space than a standard hotel room. The tradeoff is location: you are a short walk from the center rather than in the thick of it. If you do not mind that, Pavo offers very good value and comfort.

8. Enorme Teatro Beach Hotel

Beach hotel near Heraklion.
The best beach hotel near Heraklion. Enorme Teatro Beach Hotel is an Adults Only (16+) hotel on Ammoudara Beach, about 5 km west of the city center. It is the right choice if you want sand, swimming, a beach-club feel, and easy access to Heraklion by taxi or bus.

The hotel has a stylish, relaxed vibe, good food, and a better holiday feel than central Heraklion hotels. It is not the place to stay if you want to walk out to the Archaeological Museum, Lion Square, or the ferry port. But if you want beach days with Heraklion sights nearby, this is the best fit.

Where to Stay in Heraklion

  • Best area for most travelers: Inside or just beside the Venetian Walls, near the Archaeological Museum, Lion Square, and the pedestrian center.
  • Best area for early ferries: The port and marina side of the center. GDM Megaron and Lato Boutique Hotel are the easiest choices.
  • Best area for beach: Ammoudara, west of the city. It is not charming, but it has the best beach-hotel setup near Heraklion.
  • Best hotel for Knossos and the museum: Stay centrally, not near Knossos itself. The museum is in the city center, and Knossos is an easy taxi or bus ride away.
  • Best area without a car: The city center. You can walk to restaurants, museums, shops, the port, and bus connections.
  • Best area with a car: A hotel with parking, or a stay just outside the densest part of the Old Town. Do not assume street parking will be easy inside the walls.
  • Best length of stay: One night is enough for ferry or airport logistics. Two nights is ideal for Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, restaurants, and a proper look at the city. Three nights works well if you are adding Archanes, wineries, or Phaistos.

Heraklion Hotels FAQ

Should I stay in Heraklion or Chania?

Stay in Heraklion for Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, ferries, airport convenience, food, nightlife, and central Crete day trips. Stay in Chania for Old Town beauty, romantic hotels, harbor atmosphere, and west Crete beaches. For a first trip to Crete, I prefer Chania. For history and logistics, Heraklion is better.

What is the best area to stay in Heraklion?

The best area to stay in Heraklion is inside or just beside the Venetian Walls, close to the Archaeological Museum, Lion Square, 25th of August Street, the port, and the pedestrian center. This area is walkable, convenient, and best for restaurants, nightlife, museums, and ferries.

Is there a beach in Heraklion?

There is no good swimming beach in central Heraklion. The best beach area near Heraklion is Ammoudara, about 15 minutes west by taxi or bus. Stay at Enorme Teatro Beach Hotel (for couples) or Apollonia Beach Resort & Spa (for families) if you want a beach hotel near the city.

Is Heraklion a good base in Crete?

Heraklion is a good base if you care about history, food, ferries, the airport, Knossos, and central Crete. It is not the best base for a beach holiday or the prettiest town on the island. Choose Rethymno for a smaller old-town stay with a beach, Chania for the best first-time base, and Elounda for luxury resorts.

Where should I stay in Heraklion for an early ferry?

Stay near the port and marina. GDM Megaron and Lato Boutique Hotel are the easiest choices for early ferries because they are close to the port entrance and still walkable to the city center.

Do I need a car in Heraklion?

You do not need a car for central Heraklion, the Archaeological Museum, restaurants, the port, or a short city stay. Use a taxi or bus for Knossos. Rent a car if you want Archanes, wineries, Phaistos, Matala, the Lasithi Plateau, or eastern Crete. Avoid driving into the center unless your hotel has parking.

How many nights should I stay in Heraklion?

Stay 1 night if you are using Heraklion for ferry or airport logistics. Stay 2 nights if you want to visit Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, Koules Fortress, and enjoy the food scene. Stay 3 nights if you are adding central Crete villages, wineries, Phaistos, or Matala.
