My Santorini Transfer Recommendations

• Airport or ferry arrival: Pre-book a transfer. I would not arrive in Santorini in July or August and simply hope to find a taxi.
• Airport or ferry departure: Pre-book again. Missing a dinner reservation because you can’t find a taxi is annoying. Missing a ferry or flight is much worse.
• Exploring with a driver: Hire Theodoros for a half-day or full day. He was born and raised on Santorini and knows the island extremely well.
• Getting around during your stay: Taxis and Uber are fine when available. The Santorini buses are cheap and useful, especially between Fira and the main towns and beaches.
• Exploring independently for several days: Renting a car is better value than paying for private transfers every day.

My Favorite Santorini Driver: Theodoros

If you want a driver who really knows Santorini and can help you explore the island, I recommend Theodoros. He was born and raised on Santorini and knows the island inside out. I’ve driven around the island with him and he’s much more than someone who simply gets you from A to B. He knows the villages, beaches, wineries, viewpoints, back roads, and plenty of places most visitors would never find on their own. Tell him what you want to see, or ask what he recommends.

Why I Recommend Pre-Booking

Santorini has only a few dozen taxis serving the entire island. In summer, that’s nowhere near enough, especially when several flights or a large ferry arrive at once.

The worst spot is the Athinios ferry port, where hundreds of passengers can come off a ferry at essentially the same time. The Santorini Airport (JTR) is easier, but taxi lines can build quickly when several flights arrive close together. From May through October, I pre-book any airport or ferry transfer where timing matters.

Taxis can be cheaper and are fine for spontaneous trips when you can find one. For an airport or ferry arrival, early-morning departure, or any journey where timing matters, I prefer having a vehicle reserved. For taxi fares, taxi stands, and Uber, see my Santorini Taxi and Uber guide.

Santorini Airport Transfers

With a pre-booked airport transfer, provide your flight number when booking. The driver monitors the flight and adjusts the pickup if you arrive late. With Welcome Pickups, you’ll receive the driver’s details before pickup.

Drive Times from Santorini Airport

• Airport to Fira: About 10 to 15 minutes.
• Airport to Firostefani: About 15 minutes.
• Airport to Imerovigli: About 15 to 20 minutes.
• Airport to Oia: About 25 to 30 minutes.
• Airport to Kamari: About 10 minutes.
• Airport to Perissa: About 20 to 25 minutes.
• Airport to Athinios ferry port: About 20 to 25 minutes.

Summer traffic through Fira and on the road to Oia can add 10 to 20 minutes or more. If you’re landing at the airport and catching a ferry the same day, don’t plan the connection based solely on driving time. Flights can be late, baggage can be slow, and traffic down the Athinios port road can back up before a major ferry departure.

Santorini Ferry Port Transfers

I recommend pre-booking even more strongly at the Athinios ferry port than at the airport. Athinios sits at the bottom of the caldera with one steep, winding road connecting it to the rest of Santorini. When a large ferry arrives, passengers, cars, buses, hotel vans, taxis, and transfer vehicles all converge on a very small area. It can look completely chaotic. That’s normal.

When booking, give the transfer company your ferry name and route, not just the scheduled arrival time. Ferries can run late, and a good transfer service will track the actual arrival.

Make sure you’re booking the correct port. Athinios is the main port for regular passenger ferries. The Old Port below Fira is primarily used by cruise tenders and excursion boats. They are completely different places.

Getting from the Port to Your Hotel

A private transfer does not necessarily mean the car can drive to the front door of your hotel. This matters in Oia, Fira, Firostefani, and Imerovigli, where many caldera hotels are reached only by pedestrian lanes and stairs. Your driver will take you to the closest practical road access point.

If you’re staying at a caldera hotel with heavy luggage, tell the hotel your arrival time and ask where your driver should drop you and whether a porter can meet you.

This is particularly important in Oia. “Hotel transfer included” does not mean a Mercedes is somehow going to descend 75 steps through a pedestrian village and pull up beside your infinity pool.

Typical Santorini Private Transfer Prices

Private transfer prices vary by company, vehicle size, time, and destination. For 1 to 4 passengers, these are reasonable amounts to use for trip planning.

• Airport to Fira or Firostefani: About €30 to €40.
• Airport to Oia: About €40 to €60.
• Airport to Imerovigli: About €35 to €45.
• Airport to Kamari: About €25 to €35.
• Airport to Perissa: About €40 to €50.
• Athinios Port to Fira or Firostefani: About €35 to €45.
• Athinios Port to Oia: About €45 to €60.
• Athinios Port to Imerovigli: About €40 to €50.
• Athinios Port to Kamari: About €35 to €45.
• Athinios Port to Perissa: About €40 to €50.
• Airport to Athinios Port: About €35 to €45.

These are estimated rates per vehicle, not per person. Larger vehicles cost more but can be good value for a family or group. Use these prices for budgeting and then check the actual price for your dates.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

For June through September, I would book airport and ferry transfers a week or two in advance. In April, May, and October, several days ahead is usually fine. Book earlier for a late-night arrival, early-morning departure, or a group needing a larger vehicle.

Booking a Departure Transfer

For the airport, I want the transfer to get me there about 90 minutes to 2 hours before an international flight. Santorini Airport is small, but summer check-in and security lines can be long.

For the ferry port, I arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure. Athinios is not a pleasant place to sit for hours, so arriving much earlier doesn’t accomplish much. But traffic on the single road down to the port can get congested around major ferry departures.

Hiring a Private Driver by the Hour

A private driver is more expensive than renting a car, but it’s a great way to see several places in one day without driving or worrying about parking.

• Wineries: Probably the best use of a private driver. Santorini’s wineries are spread around the island and nobody needs to be the designated driver.
• Akrotiri and southern Santorini: Combine the Akrotiri archaeological site, Red Beach viewpoint, a winery, Megalochori, and perhaps the Akrotiri lighthouse.
• Island sightseeing: Oia, Imerovigli, Pyrgos, Profitis Ilias, Megalochori, Akrotiri, and a beach can be combined into a half-day or full-day route.
• Cruise passengers: A driver makes it much easier to see several parts of Santorini when you have limited time.

Four to 5 hours is enough to see several major sights without rushing. Six to 8 hours makes sense if you want to add a winery tasting, archaeological site, beach stop, or leisurely lunch.

As a rough guide, private driver hire starts around €45 to €60 per hour, usually with a minimum booking period. Check what the price includes and whether waiting time or additional stops cost extra.

Private Transfer, Rental Car, or Bus?

If you just need transportation from the airport or port to your hotel and back again, private transfers are easier than renting a car. If you plan to explore independently for several days, renting a car will be cheaper and more flexible.

A good middle ground is to transfer to your hotel when you arrive, rent a car for one or two days in the middle of your stay, then use another private transfer for departure. This avoids dealing with a rental car immediately after a flight or ferry and means you aren’t paying for one while spending the day walking around Oia or Fira.

The Santorini bus system is inexpensive and useful. If you’re traveling light, staying in Fira, and aren’t in a hurry, the bus is a good choice. The drawback is that Fira is the hub, so many journeys require changing buses there. Airport to Oia, for example, normally means one bus to Fira and another to Oia.

For one person on a budget, take the bus. For a family of four with suitcases arriving from an overnight flight, I’d pay for the transfer.

Santorini Transfers FAQ

Can I book a transfer for more than 4 people?

Yes. Standard taxis carry a maximum of four passengers, while transfer companies have larger vehicles for groups.

Are child car seats available?

Yes, with many private transfer companies, including Welcome Pickups. Request the appropriate child seat when booking rather than assuming the driver will have one.

Can I use a private transfer for dinner?

Yes. If you’re staying somewhere remote, book one transfer to the restaurant and another back rather than paying a driver to wait while you eat. This is especially useful in Akrotiri, Pyrgos, Megalochori, Finikia, and remote villas, where finding a taxi late at night can be difficult.

Is Uber better than a private transfer?
