My Tips for Staying in Venice

1. San Marco
Why Stay: The iconic heart of Venice – near St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, and the Grand Canal. Ideal for first-time visitors who want classic Venetian grandeur at their doorstep.
Hotel Vibe: Historic palazzi turned 5-star hotels. The Gritti Palace is a luxury icon with a waterfront terrace and opulent Renaissance décor, offering unparalleled views of the Grand Canal. For a more intimate yet equally luxurious experience, the Baglioni Hotel Luna combines historic charm with modern elegance, just steps from St. Mark’s Basilica.

2. Rialto & San Polo
Why Stay: Centered on the famous Rialto Bridge, San Polo is Venice’s oldest sestiere, known for the bustling Rialto Market and lively bacari (wine bars). Perfect for foodies and nightlife.
Hotel Vibe: Smaller boutique hotels in centuries-old buildings. The Hotel L’Orologio offers a sleek, contemporary twist, and the Al Ponte Mocenigo charms with courtyard breakfasts near the Grand Canal.

3. Dorsoduro (Accademia & Zattere)
Why Stay: A quieter, artsy district brimming with museums (Gallerie dell’Accademia, Peggy Guggenheim Collection) and canal-side promenades. Beautiful sunset views along the Zattere.
Hotel Vibe: Refined and relaxed. The Ca’ Pisani Hotel merges Art Deco flair with a boutique feel, while the Hotel American Dinesen delivers canal-view rooms in a prime cultural locale.

4. Santa Croce
Why Stay: Less touristy, close to Piazzale Roma (car/bus terminus) and Venice’s main train station (Santa Lucia). Good for arrivals/departures with luggage.
Hotel Vibe: Often more budget-friendly than central spots. The Hotel Antiche Figure overlooks the Grand Canal near the station, while smaller guesthouses hide along tranquil backstreets.

5. Cannaregio (Jewish Ghetto)
Why Stay: A taste of “real Venice,” where locals outnumber tourists. The Jewish Ghetto area is historically significant, with synagogues, kosher bakeries, and scenic canals.
Hotel Vibe: Understated, traditional charm. The Hotel Vecellio is family-run near the northern lagoon, and the Eurostars Residenza Cannaregio offers modern updates in a former monastery courtyard.

6. Castello (Arsenale & Biennale)
Why Stay: The largest sestiere, mixing local life with major art events (the Biennale) at the Giardini. Great for quieter exploration away from San Marco’s crowds.
Hotel Vibe: Mid-range to boutique, often in offbeat corners. The Liassidi Palace Hotel reworks a 15th-century palazzo near the Greci Bridge, while smaller B&Bs cater to art lovers near the Biennale pavilions.

7. Arsenale Area (Eastern Castello)
Why Stay: For maritime history buffs (the old shipyards once powered Venice’s naval might) and a local, residential scene. Fewer crowds, but still walkable to major attractions.
Hotel Vibe: Modest hotels interspersed with local apartments. The Hotel Ca’ Formenta overlooks the lagoon, bridging the gap between tourist hotspots and Castello’s quieter charms.

8. Giudecca
Why Stay: Across the lagoon from central Venice, with wide waterfront promenades and a slow-paced island vibe. Amazing skyline views of San Marco from a calmer vantage point.
Hotel Vibe: Waterside luxury to bohemian hideaways. The Belmond Cipriani reigns as an opulent classic, while the affordable Generator Venice draws a younger crowd in a stylish hostel setting.

9. Lido di Venezia
Why Stay: Venice’s beach escape – an island lined with resorts and Art Nouveau villas. Home to the annual Venice Film Festival. Perfect for summertime lounging and easy ferry rides into the city.
Hotel Vibe: Seaside holiday meets Venetian elegance. The Hotel Excelsior Venice Lido Resort offers grand Belle Époque flair, while smaller beachfront lodgings cater to laid-back sun-seekers.

10. San Giorgio Maggiore
Why Stay: Tiny island known for the postcard-worthy view of Venice’s skyline from its church bell tower. Peaceful retreat but with quick boat rides to San Marco.
Hotel Vibe: Minimal lodging – often private or part of religious institutions. More a spot for day visits, but if you can snag a special stay (like at a monastery guesthouse), it’s uniquely serene.

11. Mestre (Mainland Option)
Why Stay: Not actually in the lagoon but directly connected by train/bus. Budget-friendly if Venetian island hotels are sold out or pricey, and about 10 minutes from Venice Santa Lucia station.
Hotel Vibe: Modern chain hotels and business-oriented stays, Best Western Hotel Tritone, offer significantly cheaper rates than on the islands.
