London Maps – My Tips
My wife and I in Covent Garden, London.
- 1. Download Offline Google Maps Before You Arrive
This is the single most important thing you can do before your trip. London is massive. While 4G and 5G are now available on the Elizabeth line and large sections of the Jubilee, Central, and Northern lines, signals still drop frequently in deep-level tunnels. An offline map works with your phone’s GPS even when you have zero cell service – perfect for the Underground or the maze-like streets of Soho. How to do it: Search for “London” in the Google Maps app. Tap the info panel for “London” at the bottom, tap the three-dot menu (⋮), and select “Download offline map.” Zoom out to include the key zones from Heathrow Airport (West) to the O2 Arena (East), then tap “Download.”
Pro Tip: Before you leave home, “star” (save) your key locations on the map. Include your hotel, arrival station (e.g., Paddington or St. Pancras), and the big museums. This turns your map into a personal guide that works without data.
- 2. Learn the “Big Three” Landmarks to Orient Yourself
London is sprawling, but if you know these three anchors, you can always find your bearings. Trafalgar Square is the official center of London and gateway to the West End. Piccadilly Circus is the neon hub connecting Regent Street shopping with Shaftesbury Avenue theaters. The River Thames is your ultimate compass; it winds through the city but generally separates the historic North (Westminster, The City) from the cultural South Bank.- 3. The “West End” for Walkability
The main tourist zone – the “West End” – is very walkable. The North border is Oxford Street (Shopping). The South border is The Strand/Thames (Sights). The West border is Regent Street (Mayfair). The East border is Kingsway (Holborn/Covent Garden boundary). Inside this box, you’ll find Soho, Chinatown, Leicester Square, and Theaterland. You rarely need the Tube if you stay within these borders.- 4. Master the 3 Key “Entry” Stations
Most travelers enter the city from an airport or train hub. Know which one you will be using and check if your hotel is on a direct line to it.
Paddington Station: Gateway to the West (Heathrow Express & Elizabeth Line).
Victoria Station: Gateway to the South (Gatwick Express).
King’s Cross St. Pancras: Gateway to the North and Europe (Eurostar).- 5. North and South of the Thames Feel Like Different Cities
The river is a major boundary. For a first-time visitor, it’s almost always better to stay North of the river (Covent Garden, Soho, Marylebone) where 90% of the major tourist sites are located. The South Bank is fantastic for views, river walks, and food markets, but staying there means crossing a bridge every morning and evening. This adds significant travel time and friction to your daily itinerary.- 6. Distances Look Short – But Walking Takes Longer
London blocks are irregular, the crowds in central zones are dense, and street crossings are frequent. What looks like a breezy 10-minute walk on a map often takes 20 minutes in reality. Do not trust the estimated walking times blindly. If you are moving between neighborhoods (e.g., Soho to British Museum), the distance is often just slightly too far to walk comfortably after a long day of sightseeing. Don’t be afraid to hop on a bus or the Tube to save your legs.
