The main Mykonos ferry port (also called Tourlos or the New Ferry Port) is 2 km north of Mykonos Town. The port is well served by bus and Sea Bus (water taxi) which stop a short walk from the ferries. Tickets to Athens can be purchased at the port but I recommend buying ferry tickets in advance.
Ferries from Mykonos to Athens (Piraeus)
All ferries to Athens depart from the Mykonos New Port (Tourlos), located about 2km north of Mykonos Town. Do not go to the Old Port in Mykonos Town; no ferries depart from there.
Getting to the Mykonos New Port
- Sea Bus: This is the best way to get to the ferry. It leaves from the Old Port in Mykonos Town, costs €2, and takes about 8 minutes. It runs every 30 minutes (more frequently in high season) and has plenty of room for luggage.
- Bus: Public buses run from the Fabrika bus station (connecting station for buses from the beaches) and the Old Port bus station to the New Port. They are cheap but can get very crowded.
- Taxi/Uber: Taxis are limited on Mykonos and hard to find in summer. The Uber app works to hail local taxis and is reliable, though expensive.
- Walking: Do not walk to the New Port. The road is narrow, busy, and lacks sidewalks. It is dangerous.
The Ferry Trip
The journey takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours by high-speed catamaran (e.g., Seajets) and 4 to 6 hours by the larger, conventional car ferries (e.g., Blue Star). Most ferries on this route also make brief stops in Syros or Tinos.
Arriving at Piraeus Port (Athens)
You will arrive at the Piraeus Ferry Port, usually at Gates E6 or E7.
- To Athens City Center: The Metro is the most reliable option. Walk to the Piraeus Metro Station (opposite Gate E5). Take Line 1 (Green Line) to Monastiraki and Omonia, or Line 3 (Blue Line) to Monastiraki and Syntagma. The trip takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Taxis and Uber are available but traffic in Piraeus is notoriously bad; expect a 40+ minute ride to the center.
- To Athens Airport: Take Metro Line 3 (Blue Line) direct from Piraeus to the Airport (about 55 minutes). Alternatively, the X96 Bus runs 24/7 from the port directly to the airport. It is cheaper than the metro but takes longer (60 to 90 minutes).
How much do Mykonos-Piraeus ferry tickets cost?
Ferry prices vary significantly depending on the type of boat (high-speed vs. conventional) and the class of seat you choose. Prices are fixed by the government and do not fluctuate like airline tickets, though they can sell out in high season (June to September).
- High-Speed Ferries (e.g., Seajets): These are the fastest option (approx. 2.5 to 3.5 hours) but the most expensive. Expect to pay roughly €100 to €110 for a standard Economy seat. Business/VIP seats usually range from €140 to €180.
- Conventional Ferries (e.g., Blue Star): These are larger, slower (approx. 4 to 6 hours), and more stable in rough seas. Standard Economy tickets cost about €50 to €60. Business Class seats (highly recommended for the extra space and quiet) are usually around €70 to €80.
- Discounts: Children under 5 usually travel for free, and children aged 5-10 typically get a 50% discount. There are rarely discounts for booking early; the price is the price.
How do I buy tickets and use E-Tickets?
The process is now fully digital and simple. The days of waiting in lines at dusty port kiosks are over.
- Where to buy: I always use Ferryhopper.com. It connects to all the ferry databases, allows you to compare fast vs. slow boats easily, and handles the E-Ticket process seamlessly for you.
- The E-Ticket Process: After you book, you will receive a confirmation email. For most companies (like Blue Star and SeaJets), you complete a quick Online Check-in (usually available 48 hours before departure) to generate your actual Boarding Pass.
- Boarding: You simply download the Boarding Pass (which is a QR Code) to your phone. When you walk up to the ferry ramp, a crew member scans your phone screen. That is it. You do not need to print anything.
- Best seats: I recommend Business or VIP if available (nicer seats in a more relaxed setting).
