Not a luxury hotel, but love the Hotel Jazz. Fabulous rooftop bar and pool. 1 block to Placa Catalunya and the north end of the Ramblas. 2 Blocks from the Gaudi Apartments under the Sea, and 3 blocks to Monvinic, the best wine bar in the Universitat Area.

Motel One – Always clean, great breakfast close to great food options, cheap, excellent service, wonderful showers. Not for large families due to room size but perfect for couples.

TwentyTu Hostel – We had a private room with bathroom for two adults and two children. It was compact but clean and ideal for a short break (we stayed 3 nights). 10 minutes walk from the bus station if you fly into Barcelona Girona airport. Near to buses and metro. 15 minutes (at a good pace) walk to the beach. Quiet university area. Nice reasonably priced restaurants in the area. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Good breakfast for €5 each. Lovely rooftop terrace.

Soho House – Very trendy scene, with a great rooftop. The pool is small though so you need to be out there right when it opens to get a bed space for the morning/day. Food & drinks are great, also has a Cecconi’s attached to the lobby.

The Serras is fantastic.

We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in Barcelona and it was outstanding and probably one of our best family hotel experiences. They were the most family friendly hotel we have ever visited other than Beaches Turks and Caicos. They gave kids books about La Segrada and stuffed animals and were generally always engaging them. They breakfast buffet was outstanding. It would make any foodie happy. The rooms were smart, contemporary and comfortable. There are two pools (one indoor and one on the roof top) so the kids can take a swim in between cultural activities. The location was fantastic for walking to restaurants and sites. It was amazing.

My family and I love spending time in Barcelona. As for hotels, we really liked Hotel Indigo, as it was not so expensive, had a great location and was truly comfortable and friendly.
