The Shelter City Christian Hostel – friendly staff with a super central location.

1. Shelter City Christian Hostel – Budget

Charming hostel with single-sex dormitory rooms, free continental breakfast, a courtyard garden area, and free daily activities. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the hostel is an 8-minute walk (600m) to the Royal Palace, an 8-minute walk (650m) to Centraal Station, and surrounded by numerous cafes, restaurants, and shops. (This is where I stayed on the first night of my first trip to Europe over 25 years ago.)

2. Cocomama – Budget

Funky accommodation offering private rooms and mixed dorms just a 14-minute walk (1.1km) to the Rijksmuseum, a 9-minute walk (750m) to the Royal Theater Carré, and steps to public transit. Private rooms feature en-suite bathrooms, all rooms include linens and toiletries, and property amenities include free breakfast, frequent events, shared kitchen, cozy living room, garden, and a resident cat.

3. St Christophers Inn at The Winston – Budget

A 4-minute walk (300m) from Dam Square and the Royal Palace, this eclectic hostel sits adjacent to the Old Church and within steps of the clubs, cafes, and museums of Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Private rooms with private bathrooms, mixed dorms, and female-only dorms are available, and on-site amenities include a free breakfast buffet, secure lockers, a bar, a terrace, and a lounge with a pool table.

4. International Budget Hostel City Center – Budget

Centrally located hostel situated steps from restaurants, shops, and nightclubs like the Melkweg (2-minute walk, 180m) and an 11-minute walk (850m) to the Rijksmuseum. Private rooms and mixed dorms are available with shared bathrooms, a lounge area with vending machines is onsite, bicycles are available for rent, and some rooms have a view of the canal.

5. easyHotel Amsterdam City Centre South – Budget

Budget hotel located a 2-minute walk (140m) to the De Pijp metro station, a 10-minute walk (750m) to the Heineken Experience, and a 17-minute walk (1.3km) to the Van Gogh Museum. Services like WiFi, housekeeping, and TV are available for an additional fee, and all guest rooms have private bathrooms and free toiletries.

6. Volkshotel – Moderate

Quirky hotel located a little outside the city but a 1-minute walk to the Wibautstraat metro station (6-minute ride from Centraal Station) with a restaurant, bar, rooftop terrace with a hot tub and sauna, and a co-working space. Accommodations range from cozy single rooms to spacious family suites and artsy theme rooms, and every room has a private bathroom and a safe.

7. Nadia Hotel – Moderate

Located a 3-minute walk (260m) to the Anne Frank House, a 7-minute walk (550m) to Dam Square, and steps to restaurants, shops, and nightlife, this budget hotel offers free breakfast and 24-hour reception. No elevator is available but the cozy rooms include private bathrooms, refrigerators, and tea/coffee facilities, and some rooms have balconies and/or canal views.

8. Linden Hotel – Moderate

Recently renovated hotel located in the Jordaan neighborhood, a 9-minute walk (700m) to the Anne Frank House, a 13-minute walk (1km) to the Westerpark, and a 17-minute walk (1.3km) to Dam Square. Continental breakfast is available for a fee, rooms have private bathrooms and tea/coffee facilities, and many of Amsterdam’s top attractions are accessible via a 10-minute tram ride.

9. Owl Hotel – Moderate

Charming hotel located 1 block from the Vondelpark (200m, 2-minute walk), an 8-minute walk (650m) from the Rijksmuseum, and a 6-minute walk (450m) from the restaurants, nightlife, and attractions of the Leidseplein. The hotel has breakfast available for a fee, a garden, lobby computers, a 24-hour front desk, and a bar, and all rooms feature private bathrooms, toiletries, and safes.

10. Hotel Luxer – Moderate

Good value hotel with private bathrooms and desks in every room, breakfast available for a fee, a 24-hour front desk, and an on-site bar. Located 2 minutes on foot (160m) from Centraal Station, 5 minutes (400m) from Body Worlds, and 8 minutes (650m) from the Royal Palace. The best cheap hotel near the Red Light District.

11. Hotel Arena – Moderate

Adjacent to the Oosterpark and 1 block from Weesperplein metro stop (600m, 8-minute walk), this historic hotel is slightly more expensive than the rest but worth the money, and is located 6 minutes on foot (500m) from the Tropenmuseum and 14 minutes (1.1km) from the ARTIS Zoo. Hotel amenities include a restaurant, 24-hour reception, bike rental, on-site parking (fee applies), and a shop, and rooms include a complimentary smartphone, ironing facilities, and a private bathroom with a hair dryer.
