Platis Gialos vs Mykonos Town, Ornos, Psarou, Agios Ioannis, and Elia
- Platis Gialos vs Mykonos Town: Platis Gialos is a beach resort area, with beachfront hotels, sunbeds, seaside restaurants, swimming, and water taxis to other south-coast beaches. Mykonos Town is a real town, with a maze of lanes, bars, clubs, restaurants, boutiques, sunset views, and late-night energy. Choose Platis Gialos if you want your days centered on the beach; choose Mykonos Town if you want your evenings centered on walking, shopping, dining, and going out.
- Platis Gialos vs Ornos: Both are convenient beach bases with water-taxi access to other south-coast beaches. Ornos is better for families, errands, calmer water, supermarkets, and a more everyday beach-town feel. Platis Gialos has better beachfront hotels and livelier beach restaurants. Choose Ornos for convenience and families; choose Platis Gialos for a more beach-focused resort stay.
- Platis Gialos vs Psarou: Psarou is glossier, more exclusive, and more expensive, with Nammos, luxury hotels, yachts, and a polished beach-club scene. Platis Gialos has more hotel variety, more casual dining, and better access to other beaches. Choose Psarou for high-end glamour; choose Platis Gialos for the better all-around beach base.
- Platis Gialos vs Agios Ioannis: Agios Ioannis is quieter, more romantic, and better for sunset views, with a smaller beach and a more peaceful feel. Choose Agios Ioannis for calm and sunsets; choose Platis Gialos for activity, beach-hopping, and easy logistics.
- Platis Gialos vs Elia: Elia has a longer, more spacious beach and an upscale resort feel, but it is farther from Mykonos Town and can feel isolated without a car, taxi budget, or hotel transfers. Platis Gialos has more restaurants, easier buses, and better access to other beaches. Choose Elia for a quieter resort stay; choose Platis Gialos for convenience and variety.
Staying in Platis Gialos
Platis Gialos is, in my opinion, the best all-around beach resort in Mykonos. It’s about 5 km southeast of Mykonos Town, with an excellent sandy beach, lots of restaurants, two mini-markets, water sports, and some of the island’s best beach hotels. Buses make it easy to get into Mykonos Town, and the water taxi runs from Platis Gialos to Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari, and Elia.
The biggest advantage is how easy everything is. You can spend the day on the beach, walk to dinner, take the bus into Mykonos Town at night, and use the water taxi to explore the south-coast beaches without renting a car. Platis Gialos is lively but not a party beach like Paradise, and it feels much less exclusive than neighboring Psarou.
Best Things to Do in Platis Gialos
• Platis Gialos Beach: The main reason to stay here. The sandy beach has generally calm water and is good for swimming. Most of it is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas in summer, with food and drinks served from the beachfront restaurants.
• Take the Water Taxi: One of the best reasons to stay in Platis Gialos. Boats run along the south coast to Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari, and Elia. Service is seasonal and weather-dependent, but when it’s running this is the easiest way to beach-hop on Mykonos.
• Walk to Psarou and Agia Anna: Psarou is an easy walk west from Platis Gialos, while Agia Anna and excellent Nikolas Taverna are about 10 minutes east. I would not plan on a continuous coastal walk from Platis Gialos through Paraga to Paradise. The old route beyond Agia Anna has become awkward, with rough sections and access affected by development around Paraga.

Best Restaurants in Platis Gialos
The beachfront has plenty of good restaurants, most with tables overlooking or directly on the sand.
• Avli Tou Thodori: One of the best restaurants on the beach, at the western end near Petasos, with Greek and Mediterranean dishes and a good seafood selection.
• Yialo-Yialo: A classic and reliable choice in the center of the beach, with a huge menu of Greek favorites and fresh seafood. Always busy and always good.
• Blue Myth Restaurant: At Petinos Hotel and best known for its Greek Night with live music and traditional dancing. A fun night out.
• Bonatsa: Trendier and more upscale, with a beach-club atmosphere. Good for lunch, drinks, and spending a few hours by the beach.
Getting Around Platis Gialos
• Walking: Platis Gialos itself is very easy to walk. Psarou is close to the west and Agia Anna is about 10 minutes east. I would use the road or water taxi rather than rely on the old coastal route beyond Agia Anna toward Paraga and Paradise.
• Bus: Buses between Platis Gialos and Mykonos Town are frequent in summer and run to Fabrika bus station on the south side of town. Service is especially frequent through the middle of the day and evening, with later buses during the main tourist season. Schedules change during the season, so don’t build an evening around an old timetable.
• Water Taxi: Boats run from Platis Gialos along the south coast to Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari, and Elia. It’s my favorite way to visit several beaches without renting a car.
• Airport & Ferry Port: Mykonos Airport is about 3 km away and a short taxi or pre-booked transfer. The New Port at Tourlos is farther, and driving time varies considerably with summer traffic.

1. Petasos Beach Resort & Spa
Luxury resort in an excellent location between Platis Gialos and Psarou, with a private beach area and gorgeous bi-level saltwater pool facing the sea. Rooms and suites have balconies or terraces; upgraded categories add outdoor jacuzzis, shared pools, or private pools. Larger suites have two or three bedrooms. There are two open-air restaurants, a pool bar, full-service spa, sauna and steam facilities, and a fitness center. Platis Gialos is just outside the hotel and Psarou is about a 5-minute walk away. The hotel’s private beach area is not recommended for children.
2. Branco Mykonos
5-star hotel directly on the beach with its own beach club, a pool with music, and a spa cabana by the water. Rooms and suites have private balconies or terraces with sea views, and some higher-end suites add outdoor jacuzzis. There’s a modern Greek restaurant, beach bar, gym, and free parking. A la carte Mediterranean breakfast is included. Several restaurants and beach clubs, the bus stop, and the water taxi pier are within an easy walk.
3. Petinos Beach Hotel
Luxury hotel at the western end of Platis Gialos, with sea views from its rooms and suites and some higher-end categories with indoor or outdoor jacuzzis. Amenities include two restaurants and a bar, a pool with a shallow kids area, fitness center, sauna, and hammam. Guests can also use the spa, salon, and massage services at the sister hotel nearby. Airport and port transfers can be arranged for an extra charge. The bus stop is just outside, and Psarou is a short walk away.
4. Myconian Ambassador Relais & Chateaux
Luxury boutique hotel on the hill above Platis Gialos, with modern, spacious rooms and suites, many with outdoor jacuzzis or private pools and sea views. There’s a full-service spa with steam room, sauna, and hammam, a well-equipped gym, and a large sea-view pool with plenty of sunbeds and a pool bar. Room rates typically include a champagne buffet breakfast. The beach is a couple of minutes downhill.
5. Nissaki Boutique Hotel
Small boutique hotel between Psarou and Platis Gialos beaches. Rooms and suites have sea views, and some higher-end suites add outdoor jacuzzis or access to a semi-private saltwater pool. Greek buffet breakfast is included. There’s also a Mediterranean restaurant, pool bar, large saltwater pool, fitness center, and full-service spa with sauna and hammam. A good choice for couples who want easy access to both Platis Gialos and Psarou.
6. Acrogiali Hotel
Acrogiali is directly on the sand and one of my favorite places to stay in Platis Gialos. It’s family-run, friendly, and unpretentious, and you can walk out of the hotel and be on a sunbed in less than a minute. There’s a good beachfront restaurant, and guests can use the pool at sister hotel The George, a little farther back from the beach (though if you’re like us, you probably won’t bother). Acrogiali is my pick for the best-value hotel directly on Platis Gialos Beach. The bus stop to Mykonos Town is right outside.
7. Bay Bees Seaview Suites and Homes
Spacious holiday homes with one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, living areas, full kitchens, and parking. All accommodations except the studio have private terraces with sea views. These are among the few good self-catering options in Platis Gialos and work especially well for families and longer stays. The beach and restaurants are just a couple of minutes away.
8. Kosmoplaz Beach Hotel
Beachfront hotel in an excellent location directly on Platis Gialos Beach, with a small pool, restaurant, gym, and spa facilities. Rooms vary quite a bit, but the better ones have balconies or terraces with sea views, and some suites have private pools or outdoor jacuzzis. The location is the main reason to stay here: the beach, restaurants, water taxi, and bus to Mykonos Town are all close by. It’s not as polished as the luxury hotels higher on this list, and I prefer nearby Acrogiali for value, but it’s a good choice if you want to stay directly on the beach for less than the top luxury hotels.
