Large rock formation overlooking the Santorini Caldera, with a hiking trail leading out to it

Skaros Rock below Imerovigli is a great hike, whether done as part of the Fira to Oia trail or by itself. Amazing views in all directions out to the sea and along the rim of the caldera.

Skaros Rock is the massive, rugged promontory jutting into the caldera just below Imerovigli. Forged by ancient volcanic activity and reshaped by centuries of erosion, it was once the site of the island’s most significant medieval capital. Established in the 13th century by the Byzantines and later fortified by the Venetians, the Kastro of Skaros was an impregnable fortress designed to protect the population from relentless pirate raids. At its peak, a dense settlement of roughly 200 homes, businesses, and numerous churches clung to the rock. Because of its sheer cliffs and strategic elevation, it was never conquered by force in its 600-year history.

The decline of Skaros began in the 17th and 18th centuries due to a series of violent earthquakes and the eruption of the underwater volcano Kolumbo. These events caused large sections of the settlement and the “lower town” at the base to collapse into the sea. Fearing further destruction, the residents eventually abandoned the rock, relocating to the safer ground of Fira and Imerovigli.

Today, Skaros Rock is a top Santorini destination for hikers and photographers. It serves as a dramatic focal point for the caldera-view hotels stretching from Fira to Imerovigli. To reach it, take the steep, winding staircase that begins just below Grace Hotel in the center of Imerovigli. The trail starts with concrete steps and a wire guardrail before transitioning into a more rugged gravel path with no barriers. On the far, seaward side of the rock, you will find the secluded and beautiful Theoskepasti Chapel, which offers some of the most tranquil sunset views on the island.

Many travelers visit Skaros as a side trip while hiking the Fira to Oia trail, but it is worth a dedicated excursion. While you can scramble to the very top (the “Goulas”), the final ascent involves a vertical rock climb that is challenging and potentially dangerous. Most visitors prefer sticking to the path that loops around the base. Plan for at least a one-hour round trip. I highly suggest wearing sturdy sneakers; while some attempt the trek in flip-flops, the loose volcanic gravel makes proper footwear much safer.
