The 9 Best Shops in Athens for Greek Souvenirs
There is no shortage of good shopping in Athens. From the high-end fashion boutiques of posh Kolonaki to the cheap souvenir stalls that line the alleys near Monastiraki Square, travelers are well-covered for pretty much every consumer need under the sun. Amid all of these options, it can be hard to spot the best shops for one-of-a-kind, “only in Athens” souvenirs, made by locals and infused with Greek flavor. Here are some of our favorites.
Handmade Greek Sandals
In the 1950’s, Stavros Melissinos took the fashion world by storm from his small Athens shop that sold ancient Greek-style sandals to celebrities such as The Beatles, Sophia Loren, Jackie O, and Maria Callas. Stavros closed his shop in 2004, having passed on his name and his craft to his children, two of whom own and operate shops selling custom and handmade leather sandals. At both shops, in-stock sandals can be adjusted to fit, and custom sandals can be made to order.
- Melissinos Art – The Poet Sandalmaker is owned and operated by son Pantelis Melissinos, and is located near the Acropolis Museum. Pantelis continues his father’s tradition of not only classic Greek-style sandal-making, but artistic expression as well.
