Stay in Oia for the beautiful village, restaurants, shopping, and classic Santorini experience. Stay in Imerovigli for quiet luxury, spectacular caldera views, and privacy.
Both Oia and Imerovigli are excellent choices for honeymooners and couples looking for a luxury hotel with a caldera view. Oia is prettier, has far more restaurants and shops, and is more interesting to explore on foot. Imerovigli is quieter, closer to Fira, and generally better for watching sunset from your hotel terrace.
I slightly prefer Imerovigli for a romantic, hotel-centered stay. If you want to spend afternoons beside a private pool and enjoy the views without crowds, it is hard to beat. But if you want to step outside your hotel and wander through Santorini’s most beautiful village, choose Oia.
Oia or Imerovigli: Quick Answers
- Most beautiful village: Oia.
- Best for quiet luxury and privacy: Imerovigli.
- Best caldera and volcano views: Imerovigli.
- Best sunset views from hotels: Imerovigli.
- Best restaurants and shopping: Oia.
- Best for exploring Santorini: Imerovigli.
- Best for walking around in the evening: Oia.
Oia: Best for Village Atmosphere, Restaurants, and Luxury Hotels
Oia is Santorini’s most beautiful village, with whitewashed cave houses, blue-domed churches, windmills, narrow pedestrian lanes, and spectacular caldera views.
The biggest advantage of staying in Oia is having the village outside your door. There are dozens of restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and viewpoints within walking distance. Ammoudi Bay, with its excellent seafood restaurants, is below the village. You can easily spend several hours exploring without leaving Oia.
The village is especially beautiful early in the morning and after sunset, when most day-trippers have left. Staying overnight lets you enjoy these quieter hours.
The downside is the crowds. Oia can be packed during the afternoon and around sunset, especially in summer. Hotels and restaurants are expensive, and the village is farther from the airport, ferry port, beaches, and most other sights.
I rarely recommend staying in Oia if you plan to spend every day exploring a different part of Santorini. Stay here because you want to enjoy Oia itself.
Imerovigli: Best for Caldera Views and Quiet Luxury
Imerovigli is my favorite village for a quiet, romantic stay on Santorini. Its cliffside hotels have extraordinary views of the volcano, Skaros Rock, and the surrounding caldera.
Unlike Oia, Imerovigli attracts relatively few day-trippers. Even in July and August, it is usually peaceful. The main attractions are the views, luxury hotels, caldera walks, and the hike to Skaros Rock.
Imerovigli is also more convenient for exploring the island. Fira is about a 25 to 35-minute walk along the caldera path, passing through Firostefani. You can walk into town for restaurants, shopping, and nightlife, though the return walk is uphill.
Imerovigli has some excellent restaurants, but nowhere near the choice you’ll find in Oia or Fira. There is little nightlife or shopping. If you enjoy spending hours relaxing at your hotel, that is part of the appeal. If you prefer wandering around a village, stopping at cafes, and browsing shops, Oia is the better choice.
Which Has Better Hotels?
Both villages have outstanding luxury hotels, cave suites, private pools, and caldera views. Oia has more famous luxury properties and honeymoon suites, while Imerovigli is particularly good for quiet hotels with private terraces and sunset views.
Choose the hotel before choosing the village. A great hotel in either location is better than an average hotel in your preferred village. I would prioritize a private terrace with an unobstructed caldera view over a slightly larger room or a more elaborate indoor suite.
Check the exact room before booking. Some hotels advertise caldera views but have shared terraces, partial views, or rooms with little privacy. A private plunge pool is not necessarily secluded. In both villages, some pools and terraces are visible from neighboring rooms or public walking paths.
Also check the number of stairs between the road and your room. Some of the most beautiful cliffside hotels involve long, steep staircases. In Oia, check how far the hotel is from the main pedestrian center. Not every hotel advertised as being in Oia is within an easy walk of the village’s restaurants and shops.
Imerovigli often offers better value for a luxury hotel with a caldera view, but both villages are expensive. For more affordable hotels, I recommend Fira or Firostefani.
Which Has Better Caldera Views?
Imerovigli is my favorite for the views.
Many Imerovigli hotels have sweeping views of the volcano, Skaros Rock, Fira, and the curve of the caldera toward Oia. The elevation and position of the village make for some of Santorini’s most dramatic hotel terraces.
Oia’s caldera hotels generally look south or southwest across the water, often toward Thirassia and the rest of the island. The views are beautiful, but the volcano is less prominent than from Imerovigli.
Oia is the prettier village, while Imerovigli generally has the better panoramic caldera views.
Which Is Better for Sunset?
Imerovigli, especially if you want to watch sunset from your hotel.
Many Imerovigli hotels have west-facing terraces with direct sunset views. You can enjoy the sunset without leaving your hotel or joining a crowd.
Oia has Santorini’s most famous public sunset viewpoints, particularly around the castle ruins. The views are beautiful, but the crowds can be overwhelming.
Many Oia hotels face south across the caldera rather than west toward the setting sun. A caldera-view room does not necessarily have a sunset view. Hotels near Oia’s western end are generally better positioned for direct sunset views.
In either village, confirm the sunset view from the specific room or terrace before booking.
Which Has Better Restaurants?
Oia, by a considerable margin.
Oia has far more restaurants, from casual cafes to expensive caldera-view dining. There are also excellent seafood restaurants at Ammoudi Bay. You can eat somewhere different every night without needing transportation.
Imerovigli has several excellent restaurants, but fewer choices. Firostefani is nearby, and Fira has the island’s widest selection of restaurants, bars, and inexpensive food. Both are within walking distance, though walking back to Imerovigli is uphill.
If dining out is a major part of your trip, Oia is the better choice.
Which Is Better for Exploring Santorini?
Imerovigli.
Imerovigli is more central and closer to the airport, ferry port, wineries, beaches, and archaeological sites. Fira, the hub of Santorini’s bus network, is within walking distance.
Oia is at the northern end of the island. If you plan to visit Akrotiri, Kamari, Perissa, wineries, or other villages, journeys generally take longer.
Neither village is ideal for relying entirely on buses. Imerovigli has bus stops along the Fira-Oia road, but service is less convenient than staying near Fira’s main bus station. From Oia, most bus journeys require changing in Fira.
If you plan to explore Santorini extensively without a rental car, Fira or Firostefani is a better base than either Oia or Imerovigli.
Airport, Ferry Port, and Transportation
- Airport: Imerovigli is about 15 to 20 minutes away by taxi or transfer. Oia takes about 25 to 35 minutes.
- Athinios ferry port: Imerovigli takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Oia takes about 35 to 45 minutes. Both can take considerably longer during busy ferry arrivals.
- Buses: Oia has regular buses to Fira, especially in summer. Imerovigli has bus stops along the Fira-Oia road, but walking or taking a taxi to Fira is often more convenient.
- Transfers: I recommend pre-booking an arrival transfer for either village, especially from the ferry port. Taxis are limited, and many hotels are not directly accessible by car.
- Rental cars: Useful for one or two days of sightseeing. Parking can be difficult in both villages, particularly Oia. Check with your hotel before booking.
Which Is Better for Walking?
Oia is better for wandering through a beautiful village. Its main pedestrian lanes connect shops, restaurants, churches, viewpoints, and hotels. The village is particularly enjoyable early in the morning.
Imerovigli is better for scenic walks along the caldera. You can walk south through Firostefani to Fira or north toward Oia along the famous Fira-to-Oia hiking trail.
The hike from Imerovigli to Oia takes approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on your pace and stops. Parts of the trail are rocky and exposed, so it is a proper hike rather than a casual village stroll.
Neither village is particularly easy for travelers with mobility limitations. Both have steep paths and hotels with many stairs. Oia’s main pedestrian walkway is relatively manageable, but individual hotels can still be difficult to access.
Which Is Better for Families?
Oia is generally the better choice for families with older children. There are more restaurants, shops, and places to explore on foot. The main pedestrian walkway is also relatively stroller-friendly, though it becomes very crowded around sunset.
Imerovigli is better for families who want a quiet hotel with a pool and spectacular views, but there is little entertainment outside the hotel.
Many luxury caldera hotels in both villages have steep stairs, unfenced drops, and age restrictions. Check the hotel’s child policy and room layout before booking. For families with young children, I generally prefer Fira, Firostefani, or one of Santorini’s beach towns.
