Santorini Hotels: My Favorite Caldera Views

• Oia: Katikies for classic Oia luxury, or Canaves Suites for beautiful suites and excellent service.

Best Santorini Villages for Caldera View Hotels

The best caldera view hotels in Santorini are in Imerovigli, Oia, Firostefani, Fira, and Akrotiri. If the view is your top priority, stay in Imerovigli. For the famous postcard village and the largest selection of luxury hotels, stay in Oia. For restaurants, nightlife, buses, and the easiest logistics, stay in Fira. Firostefani is quieter than Fira but close enough to walk there in 10 to 15 minutes. Akrotiri is more secluded and often better value, but I recommend renting a car.

Caldera View, Sea View, Sunset View, and Volcano View Are Not the Same

Do not assume “sea view” means “caldera view.” Many Santorini hotels have beautiful Aegean Sea views but face away from the caldera. If the view is important, book a room category that specifically says caldera view or volcano view, then check the photos for that specific room type.

• Caldera view: Looks into the flooded volcanic crater, usually toward the volcano, Thirassia, and the opposite caldera cliffs.
• Volcano view: A caldera view with the volcano directly in sight.
• Sea view: Can mean any sea view, including the east coast or open Aegean. It does not necessarily mean the caldera.
• Sunset view: Not always a caldera view. In Oia, many sunset-facing hotels look west or northwest toward the open Aegean rather than south into the caldera.
• Partial view: Usually means the view is angled, partly blocked, or visible from only part of the room or terrace.

Best Village for Each Type of Caldera View

• Imerovigli: Best overall caldera views. Imerovigli is the highest of the main caldera villages, with wide views of the volcano, Skaros Rock, Thirassia, and much of the caldera. If the view is your top priority, this is my favorite village.
• Oia: Best for romance, luxury hotels, honeymoon suites, shopping, and the classic Santorini setting. Check the room view carefully. Most Oia caldera-view rooms face south toward the volcano and Imerovigli, while the famous sunset is to the west.
• Firostefani: Excellent front-row volcano views with a quieter setting than Fira. It’s an easy 10 to 15-minute walk to Fira’s restaurants, shops, nightlife, and main bus station.
• Fira: Best for combining caldera views with restaurants, nightlife, shopping, and bus connections. It’s busier and less romantic than Imerovigli, but easily the most convenient village.
• Akrotiri: Best for privacy, larger suites and villas, and lower prices. The view looks north across the caldera toward Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia. Rent a car if you stay here.

How to Book the Right Caldera View Room

• Book the exact room category you want. The difference between “partial sea view,” “sea view,” “volcano view,” and “caldera view” can be huge.
• Look at photos of your specific room type. A hotel’s general gallery will usually feature its best suite, pool, and restaurant views.
• Ask whether the terrace is private. Some rooms open onto shared walkways or terraces visible from neighboring rooms.
• Do not assume every room has the same view. Entry-level rooms can be lower, set back, partially blocked, or have their best view from the terrace rather than inside.
• Pool views and room views are different. A hotel can have a spectacular caldera-view pool and rooms with more limited views.
• A “private pool” is often a plunge pool. And private does not necessarily mean secluded. Neighboring rooms or walkways can sometimes overlook it.
• Book early for May through October. The best caldera-view rooms and suites with private pools sell first. For June through September, I’d book 6 to 9 months ahead if you have your heart set on a specific room.
• Expect stairs. Many of the best cliffside hotels have lots of steps. If mobility is an issue, ask the hotel about access to your specific room before booking.
• A heated plunge pool is worth paying for in spring and fall. April, May, early June, late September, and October can be cool and windy, and an unheated plunge pool can look great but go unused.

The Best Caldera View Hotels in Santorini

These are my favorite Santorini hotels for caldera and volcano views.

Best Caldera View Hotels in Oia

Oia has whitewashed lanes, blue domes, cave hotels, boutique shopping, and some of Santorini’s best luxury hotels. It’s also the island’s most crowded and expensive village. Do not book Oia assuming every caldera-view room faces the sunset. Most face south toward the volcano, while the famous sunset is west.

• Canaves Suites: One of Oia’s best luxury hotels, with excellent service, beautiful suites, and private plunge pools in many room categories. Expensive, but very hard to fault.
• Katikies: One of Santorini’s iconic hotels, with white terraces, three pools, and a spectacular cliffside setting. Romantic and beautiful, but there are lots of steps.
• Mystique Hotel: Stylish cliffside hotel on the quieter eastern side of Oia, with excellent caldera views and two beautiful pools. A good choice if you want Oia but don’t need to be in the busiest part of the village.
• Perivolas Hotel: One of the original great boutique hotels in Oia. Quiet, understated, and beautifully designed, with a wonderful infinity pool. One of my favorites for couples who care more about privacy and atmosphere than being in the center of Oia.
• Katikies Gea House: The quieter eastern half of Katikies Santorini, near the entrance to Oia. All suites have private verandas with caldera views, and some have jetted tubs or private pools. The spa and fitness studio are here too. A good choice if you want Katikies service and views without staying in the busier center of Oia.
• Saint Hotel: Minimalist suites built down the cliff on the quieter eastern edge of Oia, many with private plunge pools or jacuzzis. A great honeymoon hotel if the room and terrace are a big part of the trip.
• Ikies: Small and intimate, with traditional cave-house rooms and wonderful caldera views from the eastern edge of Oia. Service is personal and the location is peaceful. Great for couples who want Oia without the full Oia frenzy.
• Santorini Secret Suites & Spa: Right on Oia’s main pedestrian path, with excellent caldera views and outdoor hot tubs or pools in many suites. Very convenient for restaurants and shops, but less private than hotels on the quieter edges of Oia.

Best Caldera View Hotels in Imerovigli

Imerovigli has my favorite caldera views in Santorini. It sits high above Skaros Rock, with huge views across the volcano, Thirassia, and the caldera. It’s quieter than Oia and Fira and my favorite village for honeymoons, anniversaries, and anyone who plans to spend plenty of time on their terrace.

• Astra Suites: My personal favorite for the best overall view. Perched above Skaros Rock, Astra has warm service, a beautiful infinity pool, and some of the most balanced caldera views on the island. The pool is heated in low and mid-season.
• Grace Hotel: One of Santorini’s best luxury hotels, with minimalist design, excellent service, and a famous infinity pool above Skaros Rock. Expensive and there are plenty of stairs, but the setting is hard to beat.
• Kivotos: A bold, mostly black hotel that looks completely different from the usual whitewashed Santorini style. Excellent caldera and sunset views, lots of privacy, and a good choice if you want something unconventional.
• Cavo Tagoo: Trendy, glossy, and more scene-y than most Imerovigli hotels, with a spectacular infinity pool and excellent sunset views. Not my first pick if you want quiet, understated romance.
• Aenaon Villas: One of the best hotels in Santorini for privacy, on a quiet stretch between Imerovigli and Oia with panoramic views in multiple directions. Wonderful for seclusion, but not ideal if you want to walk to restaurants every night.
• Honeymoon Petra Villas: A long-time favorite built into the volcanic rock above Skaros, with one of Imerovigli’s most impressive pools and huge caldera views. A little livelier than Astra or Grace.
• Altana Heritage Suites: Traditional cave-house style, wonderful views, and a more intimate feel than Imerovigli’s larger luxury hotels. Lots of Santorini character without Grace or Cavo Tagoo prices.

Best Caldera View Hotels in Fira

Fira is the best caldera-view village for convenience. It has the main bus station, the most restaurants and nightlife, and easy connections around the island. Stay here if you want great views but also want to be able to walk out the door to restaurants, bars, and shops.

• Athina Luxury Suites: My favorite luxury hotel in Fira, with a superb cliffside pool, big caldera views, and restaurants, bars, and shops just above the hotel.
• Cosmopolitan Suites: Small boutique hotel with one of the best infinity pools in Fira. It’s right on the cliff and close to the nightlife, great if you want energy but less ideal for very light sleepers.
• Celestia Grand: Large private villas just south of Fira, each with its own pool and big caldera views. Excellent for families and groups who want more space and privacy than a typical cliffside hotel. Fira is walkable, but it’s a long walk, especially at night.
• Keti Hotel: One of the better-value caldera-view hotels in Fira. Simple and traditional, with excellent views for the price. Lots of steps and few resort-style facilities, but that’s part of why it’s cheaper.

Best Caldera View Hotels in Firostefani

Firostefani is the best compromise village for many travelers. It has excellent caldera views and fewer crowds than Fira, but Fira’s restaurants, nightlife, shops, and main bus station are only a 10 to 15-minute walk away. Prices are generally lower than in Oia and Imerovigli.

• Tsitouras Collection: One of Santorini’s most distinctive small hotels, in a historic mansion filled with art and antiques. Just five houses and a beautiful pool terrace overlooking the volcano.
• Homeric Poems: One of my favorite hotels in Firostefani, with a beautiful pool, classic volcano views, and an excellent location for walking to both Fira and Imerovigli.
• Dana Villas & Infinity Suites: Known for cave suites, dramatic plunge pools, and private terraces built into the cliff. Read the room descriptions and photos carefully because pool size, privacy, and views vary considerably between suites.
• Belvedere Hotel: Good midrange hotel with a lovely pool, classic Firostefani views, and an easy walk into Fira. One of the better choices for getting a caldera-view hotel without paying Oia prices.

Best Caldera View Hotels in Akrotiri

Akrotiri is quieter and more spread out than the main caldera villages, with views looking north toward Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia. Hotels tend to have more space and lower prices than comparable properties in Oia or Imerovigli. I recommend renting a car. Stay here for privacy and quiet, not nightlife or the ability to walk everywhere.

• Grand Ambassador: Large luxury hotel with spacious suites and villas, private pools, and panoramic caldera views. More resort-like than most cliffside hotels and a good choice if you want plenty of space and privacy. You’ll want a car.
• Astarte Suites: Romantic cliffside hotel with a spectacular infinity pool and wide caldera views. One of my favorite Akrotiri hotels for couples who want quiet and seclusion.

Final Advice

If this is your first trip to Santorini and the budget allows, book a caldera-view room for at least part of your stay. It’s worth the splurge.

Pay close attention to the specific room category, not just the hotel. At the same hotel, one room can have a private terrace and unobstructed volcano view while another is lower on the cliff, overlooked, or has only a partial view. If the view is why you’re paying extra, make sure you’re booking the room that actually has it.
