Is April a Good Time to Visit Athens?
Yes, April is a very good time to visit Athens, especially for first-time visitors who want comfortable sightseeing weather without peak-summer crowds. The city is lively, restaurants are open, hotels are active, and the major ancient sites are far more pleasant than they are during the summer peak. But April is not ideal if your trip is mainly about beach time, warm sea swimming, or a full summer island-hopping schedule. For that, May, June, or September are better choices.
April is best for:
- First-time visitors who want to see the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Plaka, museums, and central neighborhoods on foot.
- Couples and honeymooners who want good restaurants, rooftop bars, boutique hotels, and a less frantic atmosphere than summer.
- Families who want ancient sites without extreme heat.
- Travelers combining Athens with mainland Greece, especially Delphi, Meteora, Nafplio, and the Peloponnese.
- Value-focused travelers who want better hotel availability than late spring and summer.
April at a Glance
- Weather: Usually mild and pleasant, with warm sunny afternoons, cool evenings, and some chance of rain.
- Crowds: Moderate. Busy enough to feel alive, but much easier than summer.
- Hotels: Good selection and better value than May through October, though Easter can raise demand in some years.
- Best for: Acropolis sightseeing, museums, walking, food, rooftop drinks, and day trips.
- Main downside: Weather is not guaranteed, evenings can be cool, and the sea is still chilly.
- Big planning note: If Greek Easter falls during your trip, double-check opening hours, restaurant availability, and domestic travel plans.

Early April vs. Late April
Early April can still feel transitional. You can get beautiful sunny days, but mornings and evenings are cooler, and showers are more likely. It is still a good time to visit, but you will want a light jacket and a flexible attitude.
Late April is warmer, brighter, and better for outdoor dining, rooftop drinks, and day trips. The city feels more settled into spring, and the ancient sites look their best before summer heat dries everything out.
If you have a choice, I slightly prefer late April for Athens. But if Greek Easter falls in late April, early April may be easier for hotels, restaurants, and logistics.
What to Book Before You Arrive
April is not peak summer, but Athens is popular year-round and the best experiences still benefit from planning.
- Hotels: Book early if you want a central boutique hotel, a family room, or a hotel with Acropolis views. Start with where to stay in Athens and best hotels in Athens.
- Acropolis tickets or tours: April is much better than summer, but the Acropolis is still Athens’ top sight. I recommend booking an Acropolis tour or timed-entry plan in advance.
- Museum visits: The Acropolis Museum and National Archaeological Museum are excellent April options, especially if the weather turns cool or rainy.
- Airport transfers: Worth booking if you arrive late, have kids, or do not want to deal with taxis after a long flight. For most first-timers, a pre-booked transfer into central Athens is easy and stress-free.
- Restaurants: Book popular rooftop restaurants and well-known dinner spots, especially for weekends or Easter week. My Athens restaurant guide is the best place to start.
- Day trips: Delphi, Meteora, Cape Sounion, Nafplio, and the Peloponnese are all strong in April. For longer mainland trips, check rental car advice for Greece.
- Ferries: If continuing to the islands, check schedules before committing to hotels. Use the Greek ferry guide and route pages like Athens to Santorini, Athens to Mykonos, Athens to Naxos, and Athens to Paros.

Where to Stay in Athens in April
April is a great month to stay central. You will be walking a lot, returning to the hotel between sightseeing and dinner, and probably using taxis or the metro for longer hops. For most travelers, I would not stay far out just to save a little money.
- Plaka: Best for first-timers and sightseeing. Atmospheric, central, walkable, and close to the Acropolis. It can feel touristy, but in April that is much less of a problem than in summer.
- Syntagma: Best for convenience, transport, short stays, and easy airport connections. A very practical base if you want to move efficiently around the city.
- Monastiraki and Psyri: Best for restaurants, nightlife, rooftop bars, and walkability. Livelier and a little rougher around the edges than Plaka, but fun and convenient.
- Kolonaki: Best for upscale restaurants, shopping, and a quieter central stay. Good for couples who want a polished neighborhood feel without being far from the sights.
- Koukaki and Makrygianni: Best for Acropolis access and a local-but-central feel. One of my favorite areas for travelers who want to be near the sights without sleeping in the busiest tourist lanes.
- Piraeus: Stay here only if you have a very early ferry from Piraeus Port. It is practical for ferries, not the best base for seeing Athens.
- Airport area: Stay near the airport only for late arrivals or early flights. Check Athens airport hotels if your timing makes a central hotel inconvenient.
For most April trips, I would choose Plaka, Syntagma, Monastiraki/Psyri, Koukaki, or Kolonaki. Use my Athens neighborhood guide if you are trying to match area with travel style.
Weather, Walking, and Spring Light
April weather in Athens is typically mild and comfortable. Daytime highs are around 18°C to 22°C, with evenings commonly around 10°C to 14°C. Some days feel almost summery in the sun, while others are breezy, cloudy, or cool enough for a jacket.
The biggest advantage of April is not perfect weather. It is sightseeing weather. The Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Roman Forum, Kerameikos, Filopappou Hill, and Lycabettus are all far more enjoyable now than in the heat of July or August.
- Rain: Possible, but usually not trip-ruining. Plan one or two museum-heavy blocks in case the weather turns.
- Evenings: Cool enough that you will want a sweater, light jacket, or both.
- Daylight: Long enough for full sightseeing days and early evening drinks with a view.
- Sea temperature: Still chilly. A quick swim is possible for hardy swimmers, but most travelers will not find the sea comfortable.
- Walking: Excellent. Bring real walking shoes. Ancient marble is uneven and can be slippery.

Greek Easter in April
Greek Orthodox Easter sometimes falls in April, and when it does, it can be a wonderful time to be in Athens. Holy Week brings church services, candlelit processions, special foods, family gatherings, and a very different rhythm to the city.
It can also affect travel planning. Archaeological sites and museums may have reduced hours or closures on key Easter dates, some restaurants book up, and domestic travel can be busier as Greeks visit family or leave the city. Do not assume normal hours if your trip overlaps with Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday, or Easter Monday.
My advice: enjoy the atmosphere, but check opening hours close to your travel dates and avoid building your most important sightseeing day around Easter Sunday.

Best Things to Do in April
- The Acropolis and Parthenon: April is one of the best months for the Acropolis. Go early if you want the quietest experience, or late afternoon for softer light. A guided Acropolis tour is worth it for first-timers.
- Acropolis Museum: Essential, especially when paired with the Acropolis itself. It is also an easy weather backup if a cool or rainy spell moves through.
- National Archaeological Museum: The best museum in Athens for serious history lovers. It is not right beside the Acropolis, but it is worth the extra effort.
- Ancient Agora: One of the nicest April walks in central Athens. The Temple of Hephaestus, trees, paths, and open space make it more enjoyable in spring than in summer.
- Plaka and Anafiotika: Great in April because the lanes are lively without being completely jammed. Go early morning or near sunset for the best atmosphere.
- Restaurants and rooftop drinks: April is comfortable for outdoor lunches and many rooftop bars. For dinner, book ahead for the better-known places and bring a jacket.
- Mount Lycabettus or Filopappou Hill: Spring light and clearer air can make the views excellent. Sunset is the obvious time, but late afternoon is often easier.
- Day trip to Delphi: One of the best April excursions from Athens. The site is exposed and much nicer in spring than in summer heat. See my guides to Athens to Delphi and Meteora and things to do in Delphi.
- Meteora: Better as an overnight trip than a rushed day trip, but April is a beautiful time to go. See the Meteora guide.
- Peloponnese road trip: Nafplio, Epidaurus, Mycenae, and the wider Peloponnese are excellent in April, especially with a rental car.

Ferries, Flights, and Day Trips in April
Athens is a strong base in April. For mainland day trips, it is one of the best months of the year. Delphi, Cape Sounion, Corinth, Nafplio, Epidaurus, and Mycenae are all more comfortable now than in summer.
Island travel is possible, but this is not peak ferry season. Ferries run from Piraeus and other Athens-area ports, but schedules are lighter than in June, July, August, and September. Do not assume that every route has multiple daily options. This matters most if you are planning smaller islands, tight connections, or a short island-hopping itinerary.
- For Santorini: Check Athens to Santorini and fly or ferry to Santorini.
- For Mykonos: Check Athens to Mykonos and fly or ferry to Mykonos.
- For Naxos and Paros: April can work, but confirm ferry times before booking hotels. See Athens to Naxos and Athens to Paros.
- For Crete: Flights are the easiest choice, though ferries are an option. See Athens to Crete.
- For Milos: Beautiful in spring, but ferry planning matters. See Athens to Milos.
If you are visiting Greece mainly for islands, May, June, or September is better. If you are visiting Greece for Athens plus mainland culture, April is excellent.

What Surprises People About April
- The weather can change quickly. You might have sunny t-shirt weather at lunch and need a jacket by dinner.
- Athens is already lively. April is not sleepy off-season. Restaurants, cafes, shops, and bars are active.
- The Acropolis is much more enjoyable than in summer. The difference between April and August is enormous.
- Evenings can be cool. Outdoor dining is common, but not always warm.
- Greek Easter can change the rhythm of the city. It can be memorable and beautiful, but it requires checking hours and booking key meals.
- Island logistics are not fully in summer mode. Ferries run, but not with the same frequency or flexibility as peak season.
April Mistakes to Avoid
- Packing only summer clothes. Bring layers, a light jacket, and proper walking shoes.
- Assuming the islands feel like summer. April is great for Athens, but the islands are quieter, cooler, and less beach-focused.
- Not checking Easter dates. If Easter overlaps with your trip, verify opening hours and book restaurants earlier.
- Leaving the Acropolis until midday on a warm day. April is not August, but the sun can still feel strong on exposed marble.
- Staying in Piraeus without a ferry reason. Piraeus is practical for early departures, but central Athens is much better for sightseeing.
- Booking a rental car for Athens itself. You do not need a car in central Athens. Rent one only for mainland travel beyond the city.
- Building a tight ferry connection. April ferry schedules can be lighter, and weather can still affect travel. Give yourself breathing room.
What to Pack for Athens in April
- Light jacket or sweater: Essential for evenings and early mornings.
- Comfortable walking shoes: Athens is uneven, hilly, and full of slippery ancient stone.
- Light rain jacket or compact umbrella: Useful for spring showers.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen: The sun can be strong even when temperatures feel mild.
- Layered shirts: T-shirts, long sleeves, and a light outer layer work better than bulky winter clothes.
- Nicer dinner outfit: Athens restaurants are relaxed, but you will feel better with one polished outfit for rooftops or upscale dinners.
- Small day bag: Handy for water, a jacket, museum tickets, and camera gear.
Do not pack as if you are going to the beach in July. Pack for a spring city trip with a lot of walking.
April vs. Other Months
- April vs. March: April is warmer, greener, and more reliable for outdoor sightseeing. March can be good value, but it is cooler and more variable.
- April vs. May: May is warmer, more dependable, and better for island combinations. April is quieter and better value, with more comfortable conditions for serious sightseeing.
- April vs. June: June feels like early summer and is better for islands and swimming. April is better for avoiding heat while touring ruins and museums.
- April vs. September: September is better for combining Athens with the islands and warm sea swimming. April is better for spring light, flowers, value, and cooler sightseeing.
- April vs. October: Both are excellent Athens months. April feels greener and more spring-like. October has warmer sea temperatures and a more settled post-summer feel.
