Is April a Good Time to Visit Greece?

April is a great month for Athens, archaeological sites, mainland road trips, hiking, wildflowers, and visiting Greece before the summer crowds arrive. The countryside is green, temperatures are comfortable for walking, and hotel prices are lower than from June through September.

The main drawbacks are cool sea temperatures, changeable weather, and limited tourism services on smaller islands. Athens, Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini, Naxos, Paros, and Mykonos are easy to visit, but some beach resorts, boat tours, restaurants, and direct ferry routes do not begin operating until later in spring.

Choose April for sightseeing, hiking, culture, and a quieter trip. Choose May for warmer and more reliable weather. Choose June if swimming and a full island atmosphere are priorities.

Early April

Early April is quiet, green, and excellent for sightseeing. Athens, Delphi, Meteora, Nafplio, Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu are good choices, but island evenings will feel chilly and some seasonal hotels and restaurants remain closed. Rain is possible, especially in northern Greece and the Ionian islands. The sea is cold, and beach resorts feel deserted. This is the better half of the month for travelers who want low prices and very light crowds.

Late April

Late April is warmer, sunnier, and easier for island travel. More hotels, tours, restaurants, and ferry routes begin operating, particularly around Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, and Paros. The sea remains cool, but sunny afternoons can be warm enough for beaches and hotel pools. Late April is the stronger choice for combining Athens with one or two islands.

Best Places in Greece in April

Athens

April is one of the best months for Athens. The Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Plaka, Monastiraki, and the major museums are easier to explore before summer heat arrives. Rain is possible, but it rarely disrupts an entire trip. Stay in Plaka, Syntagma, Monastiraki, Psyri, or Koukaki for easy sightseeing and restaurants. Three nights is ideal for most first visits. Crete

Crete is the best all-around Greek island in April. Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Agios Nikolaos have enough year-round life that they never feel closed, while the countryside is green and covered in wildflowers. Southern Crete has the warmest weather, but a rental car is useful outside the main towns. April is excellent for Knossos, villages, road trips, and shorter hikes. Santorini

Santorini is quiet and beautiful in April. The caldera villages have far fewer visitors than in summer, and the Fira to Oia hike is comfortable in cool spring weather. Fira is the best base because it has the most restaurants, buses, and year-round activity. Imerovigli and Oia are quieter, and some hotels and restaurants may not yet be open. Naxos

Naxos is a good April choice for hiking, villages, local food, and a relaxed stay. Base yourself in Chora, where restaurants, shops, and ferry services operate year-round. Beach areas such as Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, and Plaka remain very quiet, with many seasonal businesses closed. Paros

Paros is attractive in April, but it is quieter than Naxos and better suited to travelers who are happy with slow days, village walks, and limited nightlife. Parikia is the most practical base because it has the ferry port, year-round restaurants, and the best bus connections. Naoussa is beautiful but subdued, especially early in the month. Mykonos

Mykonos in April is best for quiet streets, photography, restaurants in Mykonos Town, and visiting before the summer party season. Stay in Mykonos Town because most beach areas remain sleepy and bus service is limited. Major beach clubs and seasonal restaurants open gradually through spring, with much more activity around Easter and late April. Rhodes

Rhodes is one of the warmest and most reliable island choices in April. Rhodes Old Town is comfortable to explore, wildflowers cover the countryside, and Lindos is far less crowded than in summer. Stay in Rhodes Town for the strongest choice of open hotels, restaurants, and transportation. Beach resorts are quiet, and the sea is cold, but sunny days are common. Corfu

Corfu is at its greenest in April, with spring flowers, olive groves, and mild temperatures. Corfu Town is the best base because it remains active throughout the year and offers museums, restaurants, and easy day trips. Mainland Greece

April is one of the best months for a mainland road trip. Delphi, Meteora, Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia, Monemvasia, and the Mani Peninsula are comfortable to explore and much quieter than in summer. The Peloponnese is green, mountain roads are scenic, and archaeological sites rarely feel overwhelmed. A rental car is the easiest way to combine smaller towns, while Delphi and Meteora can also be visited by organized tour from Athens.

Smaller Islands

Hydra and Spetses are good short trips from Athens because their main towns have year-round life. Syros is one of the safest off-season choices in the Cyclades, with restaurants, culture, and a substantial local population in Ermoupoli. Milos, Sifnos, Serifos, Folegandros, Amorgos, and the Small Cyclades are quiet, and many seasonal businesses remain closed. Visit them in April only if you value hiking and solitude more than beaches, tours, and nightlife.

April Weather, Swimming, and What Is Open

April brings mild days, cool evenings, and a mix of sunshine, clouds, and occasional rain. Athens and the southern mainland are comfortable for sightseeing. Crete and Rhodes are warmer and drier, while Corfu and northern Greece have a greater chance of rain.

The sea is cold across Greece, around 16°C to 18°C. Strong swimmers may enjoy brief swims on warm afternoons, but April is not a reliable beach month. Heated hotel pools are much more useful than standard outdoor pools.

Athens and major towns operate normally throughout April. On the islands, year-round hotels and restaurants are open, while seasonal properties start reopening from early April through May. Late April offers a much wider selection than early April.

Orthodox Easter in Greece

Orthodox Easter is Greece’s most important religious holiday and falls in March, April, or early May, depending on the year. It is a fascinating time to visit, with candlelit processions on Good Friday, midnight services on Holy Saturday, fireworks, family meals, and local celebrations. In 2027, Orthodox Easter falls on May 2, so April travel will avoid most (but not all) of the holiday crowds.

It is also a major domestic travel period. Ferries, flights, rental cars, and hotels can sell out, especially for Corfu, Syros, Chios, Patmos, Hydra, and popular mainland towns. Some museums, shops, restaurants, and transport services operate on reduced schedules during the holiday weekend. Arrive several days early if attending celebrations on an island, and avoid relying on a tight ferry or flight connection during the holiday period.

Ferries, Flights, and Booking

Ferries operate between Athens and major islands throughout April, but schedules are less extensive than in summer. Connections between smaller islands may run only a few times per week or require a transfer through Piraeus, Syros, Naxos, or another hub.

Build the itinerary around confirmed ferry routes before reserving hotels. Keep island combinations simple, and do not assume two nearby islands have a direct connection.

Flights and hotels outside Easter are easier to book than in summer. Reserve distinctive Santorini hotels, small boutique properties, and automatic rental cars once dates are fixed. During Orthodox Easter, book transport and accommodation well ahead.

What to Pack for Greece in April

Bring layers, a light waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a small umbrella. Pack light shirts for warm afternoons, trousers and a sweater for evenings, and a warmer layer for ferry decks. Bring swimwear, but do not plan the trip around swimming.
