Is April a Good Time to Visit Greece?

April is a great month for Athens, archaeological sites, mainland road trips, hiking, wildflowers, and visiting Greece before the summer crowds arrive. The countryside is green, temperatures are comfortable for walking, and hotel prices are generally lower than from June through September.

The main drawbacks are cold sea temperatures, changeable weather, and seasonal closures on the islands. Athens and the major islands are easy to visit, but many beach resorts, seasonal restaurants, boat tours, and inter-island ferry routes won’t be operating yet. On the Greek islands, stay in the main town rather than a beach resort for the best choice of open restaurants, hotels, and transportation.

Choose April for sightseeing, hiking, and a quieter trip. Choose May for warmer weather and more island activity. Choose June if swimming, beaches, and nightlife are priorities.

Early April vs Late April

Early April

Early April is quiet, green, and excellent for sightseeing. Athens, Delphi, Meteora, Nafplio, Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu are good choices, but island evenings will feel chilly and some seasonal hotels and restaurants remain closed. Rain is possible, especially in northern Greece and the Ionian islands. The sea is cold, and beach resorts feel deserted. Early April is cheaper and quieter than late April, except when Orthodox Easter falls early in the month.

Late April

Late April is warmer, sunnier, and easier for island travel. More hotels, tours, restaurants, and ferry routes begin operating, particularly around Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, and Paros. The sea and unheated hotel pools are still cold, but the weather is better for sitting on the beach and enjoying outdoor restaurants. Late April is better for combining Athens with one or two islands.

Best Places in Greece in April

Athens

April is one of the best months for Athens. The Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Plaka, Monastiraki, and the major museums are easier to explore before summer heat arrives. Stay in Plaka, Syntagma, Monastiraki, Psiri, or Koukaki for easy sightseeing and restaurants. Three nights is ideal for most first visits. See my guide to where to stay in Athens.

Crete

Crete is the best all-around Greek island in April. Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Agios Nikolaos are active year-round, and the countryside is green and covered in wildflowers. Southern Crete has some of the warmest weather in Greece, but a rental car is useful outside the main towns. April is excellent for Knossos, villages, road trips, and shorter hikes. Santorini

April is a good month for Santorini if you’re coming for the caldera views, villages, and hiking rather than swimming. The caldera villages have far fewer visitors than in summer, and the Fira to Oia hike is comfortable in cool spring weather. Fira is the best base because it has the most restaurants, buses, and year-round activity. Imerovigli and Oia are quieter, and some hotels and restaurants may not yet be open. Some caldera boat tours operate in April, depending on weather. If swimming matters, book a hotel with a heated pool and confirm it’s heated during your stay. Naxos

Naxos is a good April choice for hiking, villages, local food, and a relaxed stay. Base yourself in Chora, where restaurants, shops, and ferry services operate year-round. Beach areas such as Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, and Plaka remain very quiet, with many seasonal businesses closed. Paros

Paros is quiet in April and best for village walks, restaurants, and relaxed days rather than beaches or nightlife. Parikia is the most practical base because it has the ferry port, year-round restaurants, and the best bus connections. Naoussa is beautiful but subdued, especially early in the month. Mykonos

Mykonos in April is best for exploring Mykonos Town without the summer crowds. Stay in Mykonos Town because most beach areas remain sleepy and bus service is limited. More hotels and restaurants open toward the end of April, but most major beach clubs don’t get going until May. Choose May or June if nightlife and beach clubs are central to the trip. Rhodes

Rhodes is one of the warmest Greek islands in April and a good choice for sightseeing. Rhodes Old Town is comfortable to explore, wildflowers cover the countryside, and Lindos is far less crowded than in summer. Stay in Rhodes Town, where you’ll find the most open hotels, restaurants, and transport connections. Beach resorts are quiet, and the sea is cold, but sunny days are common. Corfu

Corfu is at its greenest in April, with spring flowers, olive groves, and mild temperatures. Corfu Town is the best base because it remains active throughout the year and offers museums, restaurants, and easy day trips. Coastal resorts are still quiet, and rain is more likely than in the Cyclades. Come for Corfu Town, the countryside, and sightseeing rather than beaches. See my guide to where to stay in Corfu.

Mainland Greece

April is one of the best months for a mainland road trip. Delphi, Meteora, Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia, Monemvasia, and the Mani Peninsula are comfortable to explore and much quieter than in summer. A rental car is the easiest way to combine smaller towns. Delphi can be visited as a day trip from Athens, while Meteora is better with an overnight stay, though long organized day tours are available.

Smaller Islands

Hydra and Spetses are good short trips from Athens because their main towns have year-round life. Syros is one of the best Cycladic islands in April because Ermoupoli is a working town with restaurants and local life throughout the year. Milos, Sifnos, Serifos, Folegandros, Amorgos, and the Small Cyclades are quiet, and many seasonal businesses remain closed. Visit them in April only if you value hiking and solitude more than beaches, boat tours, and nightlife.

April Weather and Swimming in Greece

April is generally mild, with comfortable daytime temperatures for sightseeing and cool evenings. Athens, Crete, and Rhodes tend to be warmer than the Cyclades, while Corfu and northern Greece have a greater chance of rain.

Typical April daytime highs:

• Athens: 19°C to 22°C (66°F to 72°F).
• Crete: 19°C to 22°C (66°F to 72°F).
• Rhodes: 19°C to 21°C (66°F to 70°F).
• Santorini: 17°C to 20°C (63°F to 68°F).
• Corfu: 18°C to 20°C (64°F to 68°F).

The sea is cold across Greece, generally around 16°C to 18°C (61°F to 64°F). Some people swim in April, particularly in southern Crete and Rhodes, but most will find the water too cold for more than a quick dip. Unheated hotel pools are also cold. April is a good month for walking along beaches and sitting in the sun, not for a traditional beach holiday.

Orthodox Easter in Greece

Orthodox Easter is Greece’s most important religious holiday and falls in March, April, or early May, depending on the year. It’s a fascinating time to visit, with candlelit processions on Good Friday, midnight services on Holy Saturday, fireworks in many towns, and local celebrations.

Easter also brings heavy domestic travel. Ferries, flights, rental cars, and hotels can sell out, especially for Corfu, Syros, Chios, Patmos, Hydra, and popular mainland towns. Prices can rise sharply, and some museums, shops, restaurants, and transport services operate on reduced schedules during the holiday weekend. Book ferries and accommodation well ahead, and avoid tight connections during Easter.

Check the Orthodox Easter dates before booking an April trip. The busiest travel period begins on the Thursday or Friday before Easter Sunday and continues through Easter Monday. When Easter falls in early May, the final days of April can still be busy.

Ferries, Flights, and Booking

Greek ferries operate between Athens and major islands throughout April, but schedules are less extensive than in summer. Some inter-island routes operate only a few days per week, and two islands that look close on a map might not have a direct ferry connection. Don’t book Santorini, Milos, and Naxos assuming you’ll find daily direct ferries between all three.

Build the itinerary around confirmed ferry routes before reserving hotels. Keep island combinations simple, ideally Athens plus one or two islands. The major Cycladic islands are the easiest to combine, provided the schedules work. Crete and Rhodes are easier to reach by flying, and many domestic flight connections between islands require a transfer in Athens.

Reserve distinctive Santorini hotels, small boutique properties, and automatic rental cars once dates are fixed. Most other hotels are easier to book in April than in summer, outside the Easter holiday period.

What to Pack for Greece in April

Bring layers, a light waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a small umbrella. Pack light shirts for warm afternoons, trousers and a sweater for evenings, and a warmer layer for ferry decks. Bring swimwear, but do not plan the trip around swimming.
