Mykonos in September.
September is one of the best months to visit Mykonos. The weather is still warm, the sea is at or near its warmest, and the island remains lively without the full intensity of July and August. Early September still feels busy and expensive. Late September is calmer, better value, and easier for restaurants, hotels, and beach days.
Is September a Good Time to Visit Mykonos?
Yes. September is one of the best months for couples, beach travelers, restaurant-focused trips, stylish nightlife, and first-time visitors who want Mykonos to feel alive but not overwhelming.
Mykonos does not shut down in September. Most major hotels, restaurants, beach clubs, ferries, and tours are still active, especially in early and mid-September. The island simply softens as the month goes on.
For the absolute peak party scene, July and August are stronger. For warm beaches, good restaurants, active nightlife, and smaller crowds, September is hard to beat.
September at a Glance
- Weather: Warm, sunny, and excellent for beaches, with daytime highs around 24°C to 27°C (75°F to 81°F).
- Sea: Very good for swimming. The water is warmer than in June.
- Crowds: Busy in early September, easier by mid-month, noticeably calmer in late September.
- Prices: Still high early in the month; better hotel value appears later.
- Best for: Couples, swimming, beach clubs, restaurants, nightlife, Delos, and island hopping.
- Main downside: Early September is not cheap, and late September requires checking beach club, ferry, and restaurant schedules more carefully.

Early September vs. Late September
- Early September: Still feels close to high season. Beach clubs are active, restaurants are busy, hotel prices remain high, and advance reservations matter.
- Mid-September: The sweet spot for many travelers. The weather and sea are excellent, Mykonos Town remains lively, and the island feels easier than August.
- Late September: Calmer, more relaxed, and better value. Most major places are still open, but some seasonal businesses may reduce hours or begin winding down.
What to Book Before You Arrive
September is easier than August, but it is not off-season. Early September especially should be treated like high season.
- Hotels: Book early for the best rooms in Mykonos Town, Ornos, Platis Gialos, Psarou, and Agios Ioannis. Late September gives you more flexibility, but the best-value rooms still go first. Hotels with heated private pools are in particular high demand.
- Beach clubs: Reserve ahead for Scorpios, Nammos, SantAnna, Principote, and other high-demand venues, especially for sunset, weekends, and early September.
- Restaurants: Book top Mykonos Town and beach restaurants ahead. Late September is easier, but the best sunset and waterfront tables are still competitive.
- Ferries: Book important ferry legs in advance, especially Athens to Mykonos, Mykonos to Santorini,, and Santorini to Mykonos.
- Rental cars: Useful if you are staying outside Mykonos Town or want to explore beaches beyond the main bus routes.
- Transfers: Pre-book if arriving late, coming by ferry with luggage, or staying at a hotel away from Town, Ornos, or Platis Gialos.
- Boat tours: Book Delos, Rhenia, and south-coast boat trips with some flexibility. Wind can still affect schedules and comfort.

Where to Stay in Mykonos in September
September is a good month to choose slightly quieter luxury areas because logistics are easier than in August. You still get warm beaches and a lively island, but moving around is less stressful.
- Mykonos Town: Best for restaurants, nightlife, shopping, and car-free evenings.
- Ornos: Best for families, beach convenience, and quick access to Mykonos Town.
- Platis Gialos: Best for beach hotels, easy swimming, restaurants, and boat access to the south-coast beaches.
- Psarou: Best for luxury, polished beach service, and the beach-club scene, especially in early September.
- Elia: Best for resort-style beach stays, more space, and a quieter feel than the busiest south-coast beaches.
- Agios Ioannis: Best for quieter luxury, sunset views, and couples who want a more relaxed base.
For most September trips, I would choose Mykonos Town for nightlife and dining, Ornos or Platis Gialos for beach convenience, Psarou for luxury and beach clubs, and Agios Ioannis or Elia for a quieter, more polished stay.
Weather, Swimming, and Wind
September weather in Mykonos is warm, sunny, and excellent for beaches. Average daytime highs are around 24°C to 27°C (75°F to 81°F), with cooler evenings and a more comfortable feel than July or August. Rain is possible, especially later in the month, but September is still generally dry.
The sea is one of the biggest reasons to visit in September. Water temperatures are around 23°C to 24°C (73°F to 75°F), which is warmer than June and very comfortable for swimming.
Wind still matters. The meltemi weakens compared with August, but windy days are still possible. Wind can affect beach comfort, small-boat trips, Delos crossings, and high-speed ferries. On windy days, the south-coast beaches such as Ornos, Platis Gialos, Psarou, Paraga, and Paradise are better choices than the more exposed northern beaches.
Evenings are warm enough for outdoor dining, but a light layer is useful, especially near the water or when the breeze picks up.

Best Things to Do in September
- Beach days: September is one of the best beach months in Mykonos. The sea is warm, the sand is less packed than August, and the south-coast beaches still have a strong summer feel.
- Beach clubs: Early and mid-September are still very good for Scorpios, Nammos, SantAnna, Principote, and other major venues. Always verify current schedules and closing dates directly.
- Mykonos Town evenings: Dinner, drinks, shopping, Little Venice, and the windmills are still lively, but the crowds are easier than August.
- Delos day trip: September is excellent for Delos. It is still sunny, but the heat is less punishing than midsummer.
- South-coast beach hopping: Platis Gialos, Psarou, Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, and Elia are still good in September. Check local boat times, as schedules can change with demand and wind.
- Boat tours: Rhenia, Delos, sunset cruises, and south-coast trips are good September choices. Avoid scheduling your most important boat day for your final full day.
- Sunset drinks: Little Venice, Mykonos Town rooftops, Agios Ioannis, and west-facing hotels are excellent. Reserve ahead for the best sunset tables.
- Restaurants: September is one of the best dining months. The island is still lively, but service and reservation pressure improve compared with August.
Ferries and Island Hopping in September
September is excellent for island hopping from Mykonos. The weather is still summery, the sea is warm, and the main Cyclades ferry routes are still active. But ferry schedules begin to step down from peak summer, especially later in the month.
The most popular routes should be booked well in advance: Athens to Mykonos, Mykonos to Santorini, and Santorini to Mykonos. Leave a buffer before any international flight from Athens. A same-day ferry-to-flight connection can work on paper but is a bad plan if the ferry is delayed by wind, port congestion, or schedule changes. If you’re not staying in central Athens consider Rafina to Mykonos or Mykonos to Rafina for one of your legs (Rafina is much closer to the Athens airport than Piraeus.)

September Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming September is quiet: Early September is still busy and expensive.
- Waiting too long for hotels: The best rooms in the best areas can still sell out.
- Not checking late-month schedules: Beach clubs, restaurants, boat tours, and seasonal businesses may reduce hours later in September.
- Ignoring wind: Southern beaches are better choices on windy days.
- Planning tight ferry-flight connections: Leave a buffer before flights, especially after high-speed ferries.
- Choosing a remote hotel without transport: A peaceful hotel can be wonderful, but understand taxis, buses, rental cars, and hotel transfers before booking.
What to Pack for Mykonos in September
- Swimwear, beach cover-ups, sandals, and a good beach bag.
- Stylish but comfortable clothes for dinners and Mykonos Town evenings.
- A light sweater, linen shirt, or jacket for breezy nights.
- Comfortable shoes for Mykonos Town, Delos, and uneven stone lanes.
- High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, and lip balm.
- Motion-sickness medicine if you are sensitive to rough ferries or boat trips.

September vs. Other Months
- September vs. August: August has the peak party scene, highest prices, and most intense crowds. September is still lively but easier, warmer in the sea, and better for couples who want style without chaos.
- September vs. July: July is stronger for peak nightlife and guaranteed summer buzz. September is better for swimming, restaurants, couples, and a more relaxed high-season feel.
- September vs. June: June has longer days and fresher early-summer energy. September has warmer sea temperatures and a more polished late-summer feel.
- September vs. October: September still feels like summer. October can be beautiful, especially early in the month, but weather, ferries, beach clubs, and seasonal openings become more variable.
