Two things immediately stand out: the endearing design, with a section of the building literally hanging over a lane chockfull of bougainvillea, and the quiet location – distant from the crowds but still an easy walk to all the amenities and attractions within the old town. The layout of this family-run guesthouse, with its staircases and courtyard garden, is very appealing, and the sizable pool is a pleasant surprise. It’s so serene, and always popular, so book way ahead. Taxis may not go right to the front door, but a drop-off point is close by.

2. White Garden Hotel

Far larger than the outside suggests, everything is simply stunning. Run by a very friendly family, the White Garden has several tree-lined courtyards, a lounge-cum-library, a rooftop terrace with sweeping views of the old town, and the sort of pool and breakfast (included) expected at a beach resort. And the rooms are even more memorable – so spacious and beautifully decorated with antique-style furniture. Some are particularly romantic, while the family rooms have sofas that convert to doubles. Thick walls and soundproofed windows ensure that noise from the array of cafés and bars nearby won’t affect the serenity.

3. Puding Marina Residence

Facing a park in the middle of the old town, the hotel exterior blends perfectly with the local history and ambiance, but the layout and décor throughout are modern and, at times, quite chic. It provides a substantial pool and extras rarely offered elsewhere: bicycle rental, library, pool bar, gym equipment, and breakfast in the charming café with seating alongside the path. Rooms in the newer wing at the back are arguably more appealing than those in the older building, but all are quiet, spacious, and lovingly decorated.

4. Frankfurt Hotel

Run by a welcoming German couple, this quaint guesthouse is, unlike many in the old town, easy to find and accessible by taxi. Surrounded by appealing cafés and bars, it is within a brief walk of many attractions (such as the marina) and tram line to the bus station. Rare among rivals is the pool, which is a decent size for the limited number of guests, while the quiet, unfussy rooms offer better-than-average street views. Above all, the major selling point is the rates, which are more affordable than trendier competitors and include an excellent breakfast.

5. Kaleiçi Marina Boutique Hotel

While some rooms (and the sophisticated restaurant) offer superb views of the marina nearby, the hotel is actually built within a castle wall in the kaleici (old town). Past the courtyard of fig trees (where breakfast is served to all guests) is the lobby-lounge filled with antique furniture. The handful of rooms are attractively furnished and decorated with styles and colors rarely seen in similar guesthouses, while the suites with wide alcove seating are particularly appealing.

6. Ozmen Hotel

Parts of the old town can be surprisingly noisy, and many hotels are overpriced, especially in summer. In contrast, the family-run Özmen is at the bottom of a dead-end lane and, therefore, very peaceful, and rooms offer larger windows than normal – except for the compact single rooms. No pool, but the excellent rates reflect this, and a welcome surprise is the resort-style breakfast which is included and served on the rooftop terrace with striking views and chirpy birds.

7. La Paloma Hotel

La Paloma is in a particularly peaceful part of the old town, but still within a brief stroll of all of its amenities and attractions – and is easily accessible by taxi. With Ottoman-style stone walls and mustard-colored balconies, this family-run guesthouse offers more personality and style than bland rivals nearby. The spacious rooms feature a delicate décor, while the family rooms, with a double bed and two singles each, offer plenty of space despite the angled ceilings. Several flourishing lemon trees provide ample shade around the inviting pool and secluded courtyard where an excellent breakfast is served to all. The effusive manager completes a memorable stay.

8. Castle Old Town

With two entrances from different lanes, the Castle is far larger than most hotels and certainly spacious enough for a sizable pool with a splash area for children and a shady courtyard café. The attractive design with white walls and dark wooden shutters is typical of this historical part of the old town. The size and layout of the rooms vary considerably; those facing inwards are less likely to be affected by noise because the hotel is in a particularly lively area of bars and cafés. And guests rave about the staff and breakfast (included).

9. Mediterra Art Hotel

A cut above most of the opposition, this boutique hotel admirably utilizes its limited space: e.g. rooms don’t feel clustered together and many face quiet stonewall courtyards. The overall design nicely merges the old (such as the wooden staircases and walls with terracotta tiles) with the new (like the chic lobby and fashionable café). There are also rare gardens, an art gallery, and a pool flanked by a huge mirror that adds further to the spaciousness. On a prominent corner, it’s convenient for taxis, surrounded by places to eat, drink, and shop, and walkable to all the must-sees around the old town.

10. Mono Hotel

Many guesthouses in the old town look the same, but not this one. The Art Deco design is instantly appealing, and all rooms are individually decorated: some with stone walls, others with plush wallpapers and private balconies overlooking the bustling alleys. The rooftop terrace and tree-scattered courtyard at street level add to the appeal. The Mono sits on a prominent junction in a part of the old town busy with people visiting the Hidirlik Kalesi tower close by and then continuing down to the marina – but is nicely distant from traffic. (The guesthouse is, however, still accessible by taxi.) The nearby streets are littered with inviting cafés and bars, and, of course, souvenir shops.

11. Sibel Pension

This quaint, vine-smothered pansiyon (pension) is along a quiet alley – convenient to all the bars along a particularly lively part of the old town, but distant enough from the inevitable noise. Rooms are a little undersized, which is not unexpected in these old guesthouses. But it’s about the location; inexpensive rates in this overbuilt and overpriced part of Antalya; and the experience of living in a Turkish home. Accessible by taxi and only a short walk to the marina and all the other inner-city attractions.
