The 11 Best Hotels in Izmir

1. Swissôtel Grand Efes Izmir

Swissôtel Grand Efes Izmir Hotel in Turkey
Hotel phone: +90 232 414 0000
Incredibly, the Swissôtel is the best in the city center, yet also the type of five-star resort found along the nearby coast. In the heart of downtown and only one block from the bayside promenade, it offers over four hundred beautifully furnished rooms and suites in three massive wings, all featuring balconies and views of the ocean or the hotel’s extensive gardens. The facilities are also exceptional and much more impressive than a typical inner-city hotel: e.g. tennis courts, huge elevated outdoor pool, vast palm-studded lawns, extraordinarily large ‘wellness center’ with an indoor pool, and a large permanent art gallery. With a playground, it’s also ideal for families.

2. Met Boutique Hotel

Met Boutique Hotel in Izmir, Turkey
Hotel phone: +90 232 483 0111
With a frontage reminiscent of a Manhattan hotel, the Met is much more appealing than the many other hotels in this vibrant district within the center of Izmir. The hotel is compact, but doesn’t feel cramped, and is colorful without being overly chic. Rooms have an intriguing décor and fascinating street views from double-glazed windows. The backstreets are jam-packed with traditional cafés, small bars, and travel agencies selling day trips. The hotel is also handy to the metro and airport shuttles and within walking distance of the bayside promenade.

3. Izmir Palas Hotel

Izmir Palas Hotel in Izmir, Turkey
Hotel phone: +90 232 465 0030
Nearly a century old and one of Izmir’s first hotels, the Palas (‘Palace’) has been rebuilt and extensively renovated since, but still retains a lovable seaside guesthouse-style charm. Catering mostly to Turkish holidayers, but no less appealing for foreigners, it represents excellent value. This is especially so considering the outstanding inner-city position squeezed between the main road with all its amenities and the kordon (promenade) lined with cafés and bars. Almost all rooms feature balconies and many offer unobstructed sea views that foreign-owned five-star hotels can only dream about.

4. Karaca Hotel

Karaca Hotel in Izmir, Turkey
Hotel phone: +90 232 489 1940
Guests will doubtless be instantly enchanted by the adorable antique furniture at the lobby and guest lounges. The rooms, however, don’t quite match that promise but are still elegantly furnished and very spacious (especially the Executive Rooms). The overwhelming selling points are the exceptionally good rates especially outside of summer, and the position: facing a shady, inner-city street which is filled with cafés, almost car-free, and converts to a path teeming with stalls selling books and jewelry. The hotel also offers free use of a sauna, fitness center, cinema, and, even more unusually, bicycles. These are ideal for exploring the bayside promenade close by which is lined with even more tempting places to eat and drink.

5. Kilim Hotel Izmir

Kilim Hotel Izmir in Turkey
Hotel phone: +90 232 484 5340
As indicated by the name and the general vibe and overall layout, most guests are Turkish, which actually makes this particularly appealing for foreigners because of the old-fashioned service and rates (including breakfast) priced for locals. The other major drawcard is the fantastic position: squeezed between the main road in the city center overflowing with classy places to eat and drink and the extended promenade enjoyed by walkers and cyclists. What’s more, the hotel design ensures that most rooms directly face the sea or are angled for views of both the water and the traditional building across the square.

6. L’agora Old Town Hotel & Bazaar

L’agora Old Town Hotel & Bazaar in Izmir, Turkey
Hotel phone: +90 232 425 0205
This exceptionally delightful guesthouse is well named: it’s just across the road from the Agora Roman ruins, within a sprawling and traffic-free market area of old Izmir, with a handful of rooms on an upper floor above an arcade of shops and a paved courtyard café. Rooms and suites are elegantly furnished in a likably quasi-old-fashioned way and face a communal terrace that overlooks the popular eatery. Squeezed between two of many meandering lanes filled with bakers, butchers, and jewelers, the hotel is a quick stroll from the bayside promenade.

8. Zeniva Hotel

Zeniva Hotel in Izmir, Turkey
Hotel phone: +90 232 422 4046
Almost hidden along the quiet backstreets of an inner-city residential area packed with fashionable cafés, the Zeniva looks – and is – more inviting than the numerous other hotels nearby. Vividly decorated corridors lead to equally colorful rooms, and the suites are especially spacious. No views to speak of, but it’s really all about the location – just minutes from the bayside promenade and the comparatively low rates for this top-notch district. Bonuses are the friendly staff and excellent breakfast (included).

Rooms feature arty wall decorations, brightly-colored chairs, and even an illuminated ring around the bed-head. As well as rates more affordable than the much larger competitors nearby, the major drawcard is the location: just steps from the bayside promenade lined with parks, squares, and cafés, yet also within the city center.

10. Smart Hotel Izmir

Smart Hotel Izmir in Turkey
Hotel phone: +90 232 402 5402
Much more appealing than the bland and outdated alternatives in this inner-city district, the Smart Hotel combines a touch of trendiness with a load of functionality. Most rooms face a quiet side street, one of many packed with places to eat, drink, and shop, while the lounge bar at the lobby is particularly appealing. Rooms are comfortable, practical, and soundproofed. They are also great value considering they’re trendy (e.g. the TV is part of the mirror), the hotel is equipped with a sauna and gym, and extras like free bicycle rental are offered. Handy to the metro, airport buses, and travel agencies selling day trips, and about fifteen minutes on foot from the bay.

Operated by the Marriott chain, amenities include a basement level dedicated to ‘wellness’ that features spas, Turkish baths, a fitness center, and a plunge pool. Rooms are as fashionable as the overall hotel design and reasonably spacious. The rooftop bar/restaurant is one of the city’s finest, and the rates are more affordable than those at fancier rivals nearby.
