How Long to Stay on Santorini for First-Time Visitors?
Three to four nights in Santorini is the right amount for most first-time visitors. It gives you enough time to see Fira, Oia, and Imerovigli, do the Fira to Oia hike, take a caldera boat tour, visit a winery, and enjoy at least one slow evening meal and hotel-pool afternoon without feeling like you are racing through the island.
Two days is possible, but it is rushed. You will get one sunset, one good dinner, a quick wander through the caldera villages, and maybe part of the hike if you plan well. It works if Santorini is just a quick stop on a longer island-hopping trip, but it is not ideal if you are paying for a great hotel.
Four nights is better. Five nights is excellent if you want a boat tour, Akrotiri, wine tasting, beach time, and a little breathing room. A full week is not too long if you love slow travel, but for many travelers, I would rather do 4 or 5 nights on Santorini and add time on Naxos, Paros, Milos, or Crete.
My advice: If this is your first trip and your budget allows it, book 4 nights. That is enough time to enjoy the views without feeling trapped in logistics, transfers, and restaurant reservations.
What are the Best Things to Do in Santorini for First-Time Visitors?
Start with the hike from Fira to Oia. It is about 10km and usually takes 3 to 4 hours with stops. The views are spectacular the whole way, especially through Firostefani and Imerovigli. Start early in summer. There is very little shade, and doing this hike at midday in July or August is a mistake.
A caldera boat tour is the other must-do. You see the island from the water, swim near the volcano and hot springs, and understand the scale of the cliffs in a way you never will from land. I prefer small-group catamaran cruises over the big tourist boats, though they cost more. Sunset cruises are popular, but daytime cruises can feel less rushed and will have better swimming.
Visit at least one Santorini winery. The island’s Assyrtiko is crisp, mineral, and personal favorite, not just a vacation novelty. The vines grow low to the ground in basket shapes to protect them from wind and sun. Venetsanos and Santo Wines have great caldera views, but they are not hidden gems. For a more wine-focused experience, book a proper tasting or wine tour.
Make time for Ancient Akrotiri. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and much more interesting with a guide. The site is covered, which makes it a good choice on a hot or windy day. Pair it with the Red Beach viewpoint, the Akrotiri lighthouse, or lunch by the water in Vlychada.
And yes, spend some time at the beach, but keep expectations realistic. Santorini’s beaches are dramatic and volcanic, not soft and sandy. Perissa and Perivolos are best for beach clubs, swimming, tavernas, and an easy full beach day. Kamari is convenient and family-friendly. If beaches are the main reason for your Greece trip, pair Santorini with Naxos, Paros, or Crete.

Best Place To Stay in Santorini for First-Timers: Fira
For most first-time visitors, Fira is the easiest and most practical place to stay. It is the island’s capital, main transport hub, and best base if you want restaurants, nightlife, shops, museums, buses, and caldera views without feeling isolated.
The big advantage is the bus station. From Fira, you can reach Oia, Imerovigli, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri, the airport, and the ferry port with a single bus ride. That matters. Santorini is small, but taxis are limited, parking is annoying, and getting around from Oia or a remote hotel can be more awkward than it looks online.
Fira itself is busy, especially midday when cruise passengers are in town. It is not the quietest or most romantic village. But it works. You can walk the caldera path north to Firostefani and Imerovigli, eat well, have drinks with a view, and get back to your hotel without needing a transfer every time.
Key stops in Fira include the Archaeological Museum of Thera, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, and the central bus station.
A good budget tip: stay in Fira without a caldera view and use the savings for a boat tour, winery tour, or better meals. You can still enjoy the views from public walkways, bars, and restaurants within a few minutes of your hotel.
Oia is the most famous village and the obvious choice for luxury hotels, honeymoon suites, and iconic sunset views. It is beautiful, but it is expensive, crowded, and less convenient for exploring by bus.
Imerovigli has the best caldera views on the island and a quieter, more romantic feel. It is my favorite base for couples who want views and calm more than nightlife.
Firostefani is a great compromise: quieter than Fira, easier than Oia, and close enough to walk into Fira for dinner and buses.
10 Tips for Santorini First-Timers
- Book early: The best caldera-view hotels in Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani, and Fira sell out months ahead for May through October. Book even earlier for honeymoon suites, private pools, and sunset views.
- Choose the right base: Stay in Fira for convenience, buses, restaurants, and nightlife. Stay in Oia for luxury and postcard views. Stay in Imerovigli for quiet romance and the best caldera views. Stay in Kamari or Perissa for beach time and lower prices.
- Do the caldera hike: The Fira to Oia trail is the best free activity on the island. Go early, wear proper shoes, bring water, and do not underestimate the sun.
- Rethink the Oia sunset: Oia is famous for sunset, but the castle area gets packed. For a better experience, watch from Imerovigli, book a sunset dinner well ahead, or see the sunset from a boat.
- Use the bus if you stay in Fira: The bus system is cheap and useful, especially for Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri, the airport, and the ferry port. Just expect crowds in summer and after the Oia sunset.
- Rent a car for one day, not every day: A small rental car is great for Akrotiri, Pyrgos, Megalochori, the lighthouse, wineries, and south-coast beaches. It is less useful if it sits parked near your hotel for the rest of the trip.
- Visit Akrotiri with a guide: The ruins are fascinating, but the site is much better when someone explains what you are looking at. Without context, it can feel like a lot of old walls.
- Drink the wine: Santorini’s volcanic soil produces excellent Assyrtiko. Do a tasting or wine tour, but do not drive yourself from winery to winery if you plan to drink.
- Pair Santorini with another island: If you have more than a few days in Greece, add Naxos or Paros for better beaches, easier villages, and a more relaxed Greek island feel.
- Get on the water: You do not really understand Santorini until you see the cliffs from the sea. A catamaran cruise is expensive, but for most first-timers it is worth it.
My bottom line: Stay 4 nights if you can, choose your base carefully, book the key things early, and do not try to do everything. Santorini is best when you leave enough time to enjoy the views you came for.
