A sunset in Fira, Santorini on a relaxed October evening.
October is one of the best months to visit Santorini for travelers who prioritize sightseeing, hiking, and hotel value over guaranteed beach weather. I often tell readers that October is a month of two halves: early October still carries the warmth and energy of late summer, while late October shifts into a more tranquil, autumnal off-season. Understanding this transition is the key to planning your trip.
October at a Glance
- The Verdict: Excellent for active travelers, couples, and value seekers. Not ideal for those wanting a traditional “hot” beach holiday or peak nightlife.
- Early October (1st to 15th): Most tourist-facing restaurants, shops, and hotels operate normally. The weather is usually stable and warm enough for swimming.
- Late October (16th to 31st): A transitional period. Evenings cool down noticeably, the risk of wind or rain increases, and some seasonal businesses in beach towns begin to shorten hours or close.
- Sunsets: Still world-class but much earlier than summer. In early October, the sun sets around 7:00 PM. By the end of the month, due to the clock change on the last Sunday, sunset is closer to 5:20 PM.
- Oxi Day (October 28th): A major national holiday. Expect parades, some business closures, and free admission to archaeological sites like Akrotiri.
Who is October Best For?
- Best For: Hikers, wine lovers, photography enthusiasts, and couples looking for a romantic, quieter atmosphere.
- Less Ideal For: Travelers focused on beach clubs and nightlife, families who need high heat for kids to swim all day, and those who want the maximum number of direct flight options.
Weather and Swimming Conditions
The weather in October is one of its biggest draws, provided you pack correctly. It is one of the best months for active sightseeing because you can explore without the exhausting midsummer heat.
- Temperature Progression: Average daily highs fall from roughly 25°C (77°F) at the start of the month to around 21°C (69°F) by the end. Nighttime lows can drop to 16°C (60°F), making layers essential.
- Sea Temperatures: The Aegean is still pleasantly swimmable in early October with average water temperatures around 23°C (73°F). By late October, the water cools toward 21°C (69°F). Whether it feels inviting then depends heavily on the day’s wind and sunshine.
- Hotel Pools: Unless you book a hotel with a heated pool, expect pool water to be quite chilly this month. If a daily swim is a priority for you, check the “heated” status of your hotel pool carefully.

Early October is still a great time for a Santorini boat tour. Later in the month swimming becomes a little less likely as the sea temperature cools.
Top Activities in October
- Hiking the Caldera: October’s cooler temperatures make it an ideal month for the hike from Fira to Oia. The trail is much less crowded, and the risk of heat exhaustion is significantly lower than in July or August.
- Winery Visits: This is a fantastic time for wine tasting. While the harvest is over, many wineries remain open and the atmosphere is more relaxed. I recommend checking hours directly with estates like Gavalas or Sigalas, as some may begin seasonal hours.
- Boat Tours: Catamaran tours continue to run, but schedules thin out as the month progresses. Swimming is still possible but bring a change of clothes and warm sweater, especially for sunset cruises.
- Exploring Villages: Walking through Oia or Imerovigli is far more pleasant in October. While you still need to arrive early for the most famous sunset viewpoints in Oia, the experience is noticeably less frantic than during the summer peak.
Logistics: What to Expect
- Prices and Value: October usually offers much better value than the peak summer months. While it isn’t “budget” in the caldera, you can often find high-end hotels at more reasonable rates than in July.
- Transportation: Ferries continue to run, but frequency drops after the peak season. International direct flights also become scarcer toward the end of the month, often requiring a connection through Athens.
- What Closes First: In late October, beach clubs and seasonal shops in Kamari and Perissa are the first to wind down. Businesses in the main towns of Fira and Oia stay open longer to accommodate the final wave of travelers in November.

Early October is still swimming weather. (Photo is October 2nd at the Athina Luxury Suites, one of my favorite hotels in Fira.) But by the end of the month the weather is likely too chilly for most visitors to swim.
Santorini in October vs Other Months
- September vs October: September is essentially an extension of summer with high heat and full crowds. October feels more like “traveler’s Santorini,” offering cooler air, more space to breathe, and better pricing on luxury stays.
- October vs November: October is the end of the season while November is the start of the quiet winter. Most tourist infrastructure remains open in October, whereas November sees significant closures of caldera-view hotels and restaurants.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Santorini “closed” in October? No. While the beach towns begin to quiet down by late October, Fira and Oia remain active. You will find plenty of restaurants, shops, and tours operating, especially in the first three weeks.
- What should I pack for October? Pack for variety. You will want light clothing for sunny afternoons, but a light jacket, sweater, and a windbreaker are necessary for evenings and boat trips. I also recommend comfortable walking shoes with good grip for the village cobblestones.
- Are ferries reliable in October? Generally, yes. However, autumn can bring windier weather. Large conventional ferries are better suited for choppy seas than high-speed catamarans. Always check the forecast a day before travel.
- Can I still see the famous Oia sunset? Yes, the sunsets are beautiful and the air clarity is often better than in the hazy summer months. Just remember that the sun sets much earlier, especially after the clocks change in the final week.
- Is Oxi Day a good time to visit? It is a wonderful cultural experience. You can watch local parades and enjoy a festive atmosphere. Just be aware that some smaller shops and government offices will be closed.
