Fira, Santorini in October.

A sunset in Fira, Santorini on a relaxed October evening.

October is one of Santorini’s best months for caldera views, hiking, wineries, good restaurants, lower crowds, and better hotel value. Early October can still feel like a softer version of summer, with warm days, swimmable sea, and plenty open. Late October is quieter, cooler, and more variable, with reduced ferry and tour schedules and some seasonal businesses beginning to close or shorten hours.

The key is matching your trip to the right part of the month. For warm weather, swimming, boat tours, and beach time, come in early October. For atmosphere, photography, romance, hiking, and lower prices, almost any part of October can work if you are flexible.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Santorini?

Yes, October is a very good time to visit Santorini, especially for couples, hikers, wine lovers, photographers, and travelers who care more about atmosphere than guaranteed hot beach weather. You get lower crowds, easier restaurant reservations, better hotel value, and pleasant weather for sightseeing.

The tradeoff is predictability. October is shoulder season: boat tours, ferries, restaurants, and beach businesses still operate, especially early in the month, but schedules thin out and weather becomes more variable later on. If you want peak summer energy, long hot nights, and the best odds of beach weather, September is safer.

October at a Glance

  • Weather: Warm and sunny in early October; cooler, windier, and more changeable late in the month.
  • Sea: Warmer than May and often swimmable, especially in the first half of October. Cooler air and wind matter as much as water temperature.
  • Crowds: Busy enough to feel alive, but much calmer than summer. Oia sunset is still popular but less chaotic.
  • Prices: Better hotel value than peak summer, especially for caldera-view rooms and luxury hotels.
  • Best for: Caldera hotels, hiking, wineries, restaurants, photography, village exploring, and romantic trips.
  • Main downside: Less reliable beach weather, reduced ferry and tour schedules, and seasonal closures late in the month.

Early October vs. Late October

This is the most important October planning point. A trip from October 1 to 10 can feel completely different from a trip from October 24 to 31.

  • Early October: The sweet spot. Days are warm, the sea is still comfortable for many swimmers, boat tours are still common, and all hotels, restaurants, shops, and beach businesses are operating. It feels like late summer with fewer people and better prices.
  • Mid October: Still a very good time to visit, but you should start building in flexibility. Some beach businesses may reduce hours, ferry schedules are less frequent than peak summer, and evenings are cooler. This is a great period for hiking, wine tasting, caldera hotels, and restaurants.
  • Late October: More peaceful and atmospheric, but less summery. Expect cooler evenings, a higher chance of rain or wind, earlier sunsets, and some seasonal businesses closing or winding down. Fira is the safest base late in the month because it has the most year-round life, restaurants, buses, and services.

October also has one important holiday: Oxi Day on October 28. It is a major Greek national holiday, with local parades and some closures. Archaeological sites and state-run museums often have free admission, but hours and local operations can vary, so check directly if Akrotiri or another site is a priority that day.

How Many Days Do You Need in Santorini in October?

For most October trips, 3 to 5 nights is ideal. Three nights gives you enough time for a caldera hotel, one sunset dinner, the Fira-to-Oia hike, a winery visit, and either Akrotiri or a boat tour. Four or five nights is better if you want a slower pace, a backup day for weather-sensitive activities, or time to explore beaches and villages.

If you are visiting late in October, avoid a rushed 1- or 2-night stay if possible. The island is quieter, sunsets are earlier, and weather is more variable, so an extra night makes the trip feel much easier.

What to Book Before You Arrive

October is easier than summer, but the best hotels, caldera-view rooms, sunset restaurants, and boat tours can still book up, especially in the first half of the month.

  • Hotels: Book early for the best caldera-view rooms in Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia; October is good value, but the best rooms still go first.
  • Boat tours: Book a Santorini boat tour for early in your stay, not your final day. If wind cancels the trip, you want a backup day.
  • Wine tours: October is excellent for wine tasting. Many wineries remain open, but some shift to reduced hours, so book a Santorini wine tour or check winery hours before driving across the island.
  • Ferries: Ferries still run to and from Santorini in October, but schedules are reduced compared with peak summer. Check times before building an island-hopping itinerary. I use Ferryhopper to compare routes and buy tickets.
  • Rental cars: A rental car is not essential if you stay in Fira, but it is useful for wineries, beaches, Pyrgos, Akrotiri, and quieter villages, especially as bus schedules thin out.
  • Restaurants: Reserve the caldera-view dinners you care about most. In late October, verify opening days before building plans around one specific restaurant.
  • Transfers: Pre-book an airport transfer or ferry port transfer if arriving late, traveling with luggage, or staying outside Fira. Taxis are limited year-round.

Weather, Swimming, and Autumn Light

October weather is one of the big reasons to visit, but it requires realistic expectations. It is warm enough for sightseeing and outdoor meals during the day, but it is no longer a guaranteed beach month.

  • Daytime temperatures: Average highs drop from about 25°C/77°F at the start of October to about 21°C/69°F by the end of the month.
  • Evenings: Nights get cooler, around 16°C/60°F by late October. Bring layers, especially for caldera dinners, sunset cruises, and scooter or ATV rides.
  • Sea temperature: The sea is around 23°C/73°F in early October and closer to 21°C/70°F by late October. Many people swim comfortably in early October; late October depends on sun, wind, and your cold-water tolerance.
  • Rain and wind: October is not winter-rainy, but showers and windy days become more likely as the month goes on. Keep one flexible day for boat tours, beaches, or ferry-sensitive plans.
  • Photography: October light is beautiful. The sun is lower, the air is clearer than summer, and the caldera is less crowded at sunrise and sunset.
  • Hotel pools: Unless your at a Santorini hotel with a heated pool, pool water can feel chilly, especially late in the month. If swimming is important, confirm whether the pool is heated before booking.

Early October is still a great time for a Santorini boat tour. Later in the month swimming becomes a little less likely as the sea temperature cools.

Best Things to Do in October

October is one of Santorini’s best months for doing things rather than just sitting by a pool. The cooler weather makes walking, wine tasting, sightseeing, and long meals much more pleasant than in midsummer.

  • Hike from Fira to Oia: October is excellent for the caldera hike. Start in the morning, bring water, wear proper shoes, and avoid doing it after heavy rain or in strong wind.
  • Visit wineries: Santorini’s wineries are a highlight in October. The harvest is over, the atmosphere is calmer, and tasting rooms are less rushed. Check hours, especially later in the month.
  • Enjoy caldera views: October is a great month to slow down at a caldera-view hotel, linger over sunset dinners, and enjoy the views without midsummer heat and crowds.
  • Explore villages: Pyrgos, Megalochori, Emporio, Firostefani, and Imerovigli are much more enjoyable without summer heat and crowds.
  • Visit Akrotiri: The Akrotiri archaeological site is one of the best October activities because it is protected, fascinating, and not weather-dependent in the same way as beaches and boat tours.
  • Take a boat tour: Boat tours are a great idea in early October and can still be excellent later in the month. Book early in your stay and be flexible if wind forces a cancelation.
  • Take photos: October is outstanding for photography. The light is softer, the villages are less crowded, and sunrise is much easier to manage than in summer.

Best Santorini October Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive, check into a caldera-view hotel, walk from Fira to Firostefani or Imerovigli, and book a sunset dinner.
  • Day 2: Hike from Fira to Oia in the morning, explore Oia, and return to Fira, Firostefani, or Imerovigli for dinner.
  • Day 3: Take a boat tour or visit Santorini wineries. In late October, do the boat tour early in your trip so you have a backup day.
  • Day 4: Rent a car for Akrotiri, Pyrgos, Megalochori, and a beach stop at Kamari or Perissa if the weather is good.

For a 3-night trip, skip either the boat tour or the rental-car day. For a 5-night trip, add a slower village day, a second winery stop, or more time enjoying your hotel terrace and caldera views.

Where to Stay in Santorini in October

For most October trips, I would choose Fira, Firostefani, or Imerovigli. They give you the best combination of views, restaurants, transport, and shoulder-season reliability. Beach towns can be good in early October, but they become much quieter later in the month.

  • Fira: The best overall base in October. Fira has the most restaurants, bars, shops, buses, taxis, and year-round services. It is especially good in late October.
  • Firostefani: The best mix of caldera views and easy access to Fira. It is quieter than Fira but close enough to walk in for dinner, buses, shops, and nightlife.
  • Imerovigli: Best for romance, views, and luxury hotels. It is quieter than Fira, which is part of the appeal, but late October travelers should be comfortable walking or taking taxis for more dining options.
  • Oia: Beautiful and less crowded than summer. Oia is wonderful in early and mid October, but it feels quieter late in the month. Stay here for beauty and romance, not convenience.
  • Kamari and Perissa: Best only if you are coming in early October and want a beach-focused stay. By late October, beach restaurants, clubs, and tourist services begin winding down.
  • Pyrgos: Good for village atmosphere, restaurants, wine country, and a quieter local feel. Best with a rental car, especially in October.

Best October Bases by Traveler Type

Ferries and Island Hopping in October

Ferries still run to Santorini in October, especially on the main routes between Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Ios, and Crete. But October is not August. Schedules thin out, some high-speed routes reduce service, and less common island combinations may not run daily or may disappear later in the month.

If you are planning a simple Athens–Santorini trip, October is straightforward. If you are planning a multi-island itinerary, check ferry schedules before booking hotels. Do not assume every summer route will still be easy in late October.

For important routes, read my guides to Athens to Santorini, Mykonos to Santorini, Naxos to Santorini, and Crete to Santorini. For checking live schedules and buying tickets, I use Ferryhopper.

Always leave a buffer before an international flight. I do not recommend taking a late-season ferry to Athens or another island on the same day you have an important flight. Autumn wind delays are not constant, but they are possible.

Early October is still swimming weather. (Photo is October 2nd at the Athina Luxury Suites, one of my favorite hotels in Fira.) But by the end of the month the weather is likely too chilly for most visitors to swim.

What Surprises People About October

  • Early October can feel surprisingly summery. Warm afternoons, swimming, boat tours, and outdoor dinners are all realistic in the first half of the month.
  • Late October can feel much quieter. This can be wonderful if you want romance and photography, but disappointing if you expected full summer energy.
  • The sea can still be warmer than expected. October water is warmer than May, but wind and cooler air can make swimming feel less inviting.
  • Sunset is much earlier. In early October, sunset is around 7 PM. After the late-October clock change, it is much closer to early evening.

October Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating all of October the same: Early October and late October are different trips. Plan accordingly.
  • Choosing a beach base too late in the month: Kamari and Perissa are best in early October. For late October, stay in Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, or Oia.
  • Not checking ferry schedules before booking hotels: Some island routes are reduced or less convenient in October.
  • Booking a boat tour on your final day: Wind cancellations are more likely than in summer. Give yourself a backup day.
  • Skipping a jacket: Warm afternoons do not mean warm evenings. Bring layers.
  • Assuming every seasonal restaurant or beach club is open: Many places are open in October, but not everything, especially late in the month.
  • Expecting peak nightlife: Fira still has bars and energy, but October is not a full summer party month.

What to Pack for Santorini in October

Pack for two seasons in one trip: sunny afternoons and cool evenings.

  • Light clothes for warm daytime sightseeing.
  • Swimwear, especially for early October, hot tubs, hotel pools, and boat tours.
  • A light jacket or sweater for evenings.
  • A windbreaker or light rain layer, especially for late October.
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip for the caldera path, steps, and cobblestones.
  • A nicer dinner outfit, but with a layer for outdoor terraces.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. October sun is gentler than summer but still strong.

October vs. Other Months

  • October vs September: September is warmer, more reliable for swimming, better for nightlife, and has more summer energy. October is quieter, better value, more comfortable for hiking, and better for travelers who want atmosphere over heat.
  • October vs May: May has fresher spring scenery and longer days, but the sea is cooler. October has warmer water, better sunset light, and more of a late-season feel. Both are excellent for hiking and sightseeing.
  • October vs June: June is better for beach weather, longer days, and a more complete summer feel. October is better for lower crowds, lower prices, hiking, photography, and calmer restaurants.
  • October vs November: October is still shoulder season, with most hotels, restaurants, ferries, and tours operating. November is much quieter, cooler, and more off-season, with more closures and fewer visitor services.

Check ferry times before finalizing hotels, and leave a buffer before important flights. Use my Greek ferry guide for planning and Ferryhopper for live schedules and tickets.

Do I need a rental car in Santorini in October?

You do not need a rental car if you stay in Fira and plan to use buses, taxis, tours, and transfers. A car is useful if you want to visit wineries, Akrotiri, Pyrgos, beaches, and quieter villages on your own schedule, especially late in the month when buses are less frequent than summer.

Is October better than September in Santorini?
