My wife and I in Santorini in September.

My wife and I on a September visit to Santorini.

September is my favorite month to visit Santorini. It is the Goldilocks month: the weather is warm but not scorching, the sea is at its warmest, and the island feels lively but less frantic than August. Early September (1st to 15th) is still effectively high season with high demand. The real drop in crowds and prices begins in late September.

September at a Glance

  • Weather: Warm, sunny, and more comfortable than August.
  • Sea: Very warm for swimming (warmer than June).
  • Crowds: Busy in early September; more breathing room by month’s end.
  • Prices: High-season rates early; better value becomes available in late September.
  • Best for: Couples, swimmers, wine lovers, and shoulder-season seekers.
  • Main downside: It is not a “quiet” month; top hotels and restaurants still sell out far in advance.

Early September vs. Late September

This is the single most important distinction for your trip planning. September is a month in transition.

  • Early September (Sept 1–15): Effectively a continuation of high season. The island is still very busy, beach weather feels summer-like, and sunset spots in Oia remain packed. Expect high-season hotel pricing and limited last-minute availability.
  • Late September (Sept 16–30): The atmosphere becomes noticeably more relaxed. While still lively, it is materially easier to secure restaurant reservations and find space in the narrow streets of Fira and Oia. High temperatures start to dip slightly, and the insane hotel prices of summer retreat just a little.

Weather, Swimming, and the “Golden Light”

September brings some of Santorini’s most comfortable weather: warm days, plenty of sun, and lower heat stress than July or August.

  • Daily Temperatures: Highs trend from roughly 28°C (83°F) early in the month to 25°C (77°F) by the end. The brutal heat waves are generally over.
  • The Sea: The sea is still very warm – averaging about 24.6°C (76.3°F) – which is one reason September is so popular with swimmers. It is warm enough for long swims and remains comfortable for children.
  • Photography: The softer angle of the sun can make September especially appealing for photography, giving the white-washed buildings a golden glow. However, the best light still depends on the wind and haze on any given day.
  • The Wind: September feels less windy than peak summer, but Meltemi-driven windy spells can still happen, especially earlier in the month. Keep some flexibility in your schedule for boat trips.

Best Things to Do in September

September is a great month for a Santorini boat tour, but keep an eye on the wind forecast.

  • Boat Tours: One of the better months for a caldera cruise. The lower heat makes being out on the water for several hours much more pleasant. While seas are calmer, rough days do occur; try to book your tour for early in your stay to allow for weather-related rescheduling.
  • Wineries and the Grape Harvest: Late summer and early autumn overlap with Santorini’s grape-harvest period. Depending on the year and when you visit, winery visits in early September can coincide with harvest activity or harvest-themed events. It is a unique time to see the island’s viticulture in action.
  • IFESTIA Festival: If your trip overlaps with the annual Ifestia festival (typically mid-to-late September), you can see the caldera lit by a massive fireworks display mimicking the volcanic eruption. Check the current year’s event calendar before planning around it, as the date varies.
  • Fira-Oia Hike: The reduced heat makes the trek along the caldera rim much more manageable. I still recommend starting early to avoid the midday sun, but you won’t feel the same “punishment” as an August hiker.
  • Beach Days: Beach clubs at Perissa and Kamari are still in full swing but with a slightly less manic atmosphere. If northerly winds pick up, south-facing beaches feel more comfortable.

What Surprises People About September

Even though it is the “Goldilocks” month, there are a few realities to keep in mind:

  • It is not empty: September is not a quiet month. Sunset viewpoints in Oia are still crowded, and the main caldera walkways will be busy during the day when cruise ships are in port.
  • The Evening Breeze: Evenings are pleasant, not cold, but the cliff-top breeze can feel cool once the sun goes down. Pack a light layer for dinner.
  • Reservations: You will still want dinner reservations for high-demand caldera terraces at least a week or two ahead of time.

Planning: Hotels and Transportation

  • Booking Guidance: Caldera-view luxury hotels still book up very early (6-9 months out), especially for early September. Midrange hotels away from the cliff edge are easier to find in late September.
  • For Families: September works well for families not locked into the school calendar. Beach towns like Kamari or Perissa offer better value and easy access to the water.
  • Transportation: Road traffic is a bit lighter than in August, but parking in Oia and Fira remains frustrating. A rental car is more practical and safer than an ATV for most travelers.
  • Nightlife: The scene remains active but shifts toward sophisticated cocktail bars and wineries rather than the high-energy dance clubs favored in mid-August.

September vs. Other Months

  • August vs. September: August is the peak of heat, crowds, and prices. September is slightly cooler, significantly less crowded (especially by the end of the month), and generally offers a more authentic experience. The sea is equally warm in both.
  • September vs. October: October sees a further drop in prices and crowds. However, weather becomes more unpredictable with an increased chance of wind and rain. September remains reliably sunny and the sea is much warmer for swimming.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is early September still crowded? Yes. It feels very close to peak season. If you want a noticeable drop in crowds, aim for the last 10 days of the month.
  • Is late September better value? Yes. Many hotels begin to shift their rates toward “shoulder season” pricing in the second half of the month, though the very best caldera suites stay expensive.
  • Is the water warm enough for kids? Absolutely. September is one of the best months for kids to swim as the water is at its peak temperature and the sun is less punishing.
  • Do restaurants and beach clubs stay open? Yes. Everything stays open through September. Most seasonal businesses don’t begin to close until late October or early November.
  • Is September a good month for a boat tour? Yes, but keep some flexibility. While Meltemi winds are less frequent, windy days can still disrupt boat plans.
  • Do I need dinner reservations? For sunset-view tables in Oia or Fira, I still recommend booking at least a week in advance, especially in early September.
