The back alleyways of Oia, Santorini on an afternoon in May.
May is one of the best months for first-time visitors, hikers, and photographers. It offers the ideal balance of sunny weather, green landscapes, and lower prices before the summer heat and crowds arrive. The main trade-off is the water: the sea is still cool, and it is not yet “peak” beach season.
May is a favorite for many travelers, including myself, because the island feels fresh and alive. The winter rains leave the cliffs green and covered in wildflowers, a stark contrast to the parched, golden landscape of August. While it is not yet true “beach weather,” it is the goldilocks zone for everything else.
Weather: Early vs Late May
The weather in May is generally reliable, but there is a noticeable shift as the month progresses.
- Early May: Daytime highs are around 21°C (70°F). It feels springlike and fresh. The air is clear, and the evenings are still quite crisp, requiring a real jacket.
- Late May: Temperatures climb toward 25°C (77°F). It begins to feel like early summer. The sun is stronger, and you can often get away with just a light sweater at night.
- Sunshine: Rain is rare but not impossible in the first weeks. By the end of the month, you are almost guaranteed cloudless blue skies.
Can You Swim in Santorini in May?
This is the most frequent question I get. The short answer: it depends on your tolerance.
- The Sea: The average sea temperature is 19°C (66°F). This is “refreshing” for a quick dip but usually too cool for a long afternoon of floating. Dedicated swimmers find it manageable by late May, but those seeking warm, bathtub-like water should wait until July.
- The Beaches: By mid-May, the beach clubs in Perissa and Kamari are functioning, with sun loungers and service available. It is a great time for a seaside lunch, even if you don’t spend hours in the water.
- Heated Pools: This is my most important piece of advice. If swimming is essential to your holiday, you must book a hotel with a genuinely heated pool. Verify the heating dates with the property directly; many “heated” pools only operate their heaters during specific weeks in May.
Who is May Best For?
- Best for: Hikers, photographers, couples on a budget, and travelers who want to explore the archaeological sites without the risk of heat exhaustion.
- Less ideal for: Travelers who want high-energy nightlife, hot beach days, and guaranteed 24/7 “t-shirt and shorts” weather.
The May 1st Holiday and Potential Strikes
May 1st (Protomagia) is a major holiday in Greece. It is traditionally a day for labor unions to voice concerns, which often leads to transportation strikes.
- Ferries: This is where you see the most impact. Ferries are frequently cancelled or rescheduled on May 1st.
- Flights: Disruptions are less common than with ferries but can happen if air traffic controllers join a general strike.
- Strategy: I recommend being already settled on your island by April 30th. Avoid booking your international flight home or a critical ferry transfer on May 1st itself.
Best Things to Do in May

Venetsanos Winery in May, when the landscape is still green and temperatures are perfect for outdoor tastings.
- Fira-Oia Hike: May is the absolute peak month for this trek. The temperatures are cool enough to walk at noon, and the trail is lined with yellow and purple wildflowers.
- Winery Tours: Santorini’s vineyards are at their most beautiful in May before the harvest season begins. Outdoor terraces are open and comfortable.
- Boat Tours: Catamaran cruises are in full swing. The sun is pleasant, though you should bring a windbreaker for the return journey after sunset.
- Sightseeing: Exploring Akrotiri and Ancient Thera is much more enjoyable in 22°C weather than in 32°C.
Crowds and Costs
- Crowd Density: Fira and Oia are lively but not overwhelmed. You might see crowds when cruise ships are in port (usually midday), but the “human gridlock” of August is non-existent.
- Reservations: For the most famous restaurants with sunset views, I still recommend booking at least a few days in advance.
- Value: May offers significantly better value than July. While Santorini is never “cheap,” you can find high-end caldera-view suites for 30% to 40% less than peak summer rates.

Dinner at Metaxi Mas in May. The outdoor seating is lovely, but a light jacket is usually needed once the sun goes down.
Wind and Breeze
May is less windy than the “Meltemi” season (July and August), but Santorini is an island in the middle of the Aegean. It can always be breezy on the caldera edge. A light layer is useful even on the sunniest days, especially if you are dining outdoors at night.
What to Pack
- Clothing: A mix of t-shirts for the day and a medium-weight jacket or sweater for the evening.
- Shoes: Sturdy walking shoes are a must for the cobblestones and the caldera trail.
- Sun Care: The Greek sun is deceptive in May. It feels cool because of the breeze, but you will burn quickly. Wear high-SPF sunscreen.
May vs Other Months
- May vs April: April is cheaper and even greener, but it can be quite windy and some smaller restaurants or hotels might not be fully open until the Greek Easter period. May feels more “ready” for tourists.
- May vs June: June is for the beach lovers. The water is warmer and the “summer vibe” is in full effect, but the prices rise and the trails become much hotter for hiking. May is the better choice for active sightseeing.
Santorini in May: Frequently Asked Questions
Is everything open in Santorini in May?
- Yes. Unlike March or early April, when many seasonal businesses are still shuttered, 100% of hotels, restaurants, and tour operators are open and fully operational by May.
Can I see the sunset from a catamaran in May?
- Absolutely. Boat tours are very popular this month. However, it gets chilly on the water once the sun dips below the horizon. Bring a windbreaker or a thick sweater for the sail back to port.
What is the “May 1st Strike” I keep hearing about?
- May 1st is Labor Day in Greece. It is often used as a day for nationwide strikes that can halt ferries and occasionally disrupt flights. I advise against planning any inter-island travel on this day.
Are there wildflowers in Santorini in May?
- Yes, this is the best time to see them. The caldera path between Fira and Oia is covered in yellow daisies and poppies. By late June, the heat usually dries these out, so May is the peak for greenery.
Is May good for a honeymoon?
- I highly recommend it. You get the romantic views and world-class service without the intense crowds. It is much easier to get a private-feeling table at a top restaurant in May than it is in July.
Are the cruise ship crowds bad in May?
- The cruise season is in full swing by May. While the island is less crowded overall, the narrow streets of Oia can still feel packed between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM when the ships are in. Plan your village walks for the early morning or late afternoon to avoid them.
