Is May a Good Time to Visit Santorini?
Yes. May is one of the best months for a first trip to Santorini. The island is fully awake, the weather is comfortable for hiking and sightseeing, restaurants and tours are running, and hotel prices remain lower than summer. May is best for caldera views, outdoor meals, wineries, village walks, photography, boat tours, and romantic hotels. It is less suited to travelers planning every day around warm sea swimming, beach clubs, and hot nights.
Early May is greener, quieter, and cooler. Late May feels much closer to summer, with warmer days, livelier beach towns, and better swimming conditions. Note that Greek Easter lands on May 2 in 2027, which will bring a brief surge of holiday crowds and domestic travel to start the month.
• My advice: Visit during the second half of May for warmer weather, a fully active island, and crowds that are still manageable. Choose early May for lower prices, quieter villages, and the best hiking weather.
• Best For: First-time visitors, couples, honeymooners, hikers, wine lovers, photographers, and active sightseeing trips.
• Skip May If: Warm sea swimming, peak beach energy, and hot evenings are essential. June or September is better for a beach-focused trip.
Santorini in May at a Glance
- Easter: In 2027, Greek Easter falls on May 2. Holy Week brings elaborate church services, candlelit processions in Pyrgos, special foods (at home and in restaurants), and a different rhythm to the island. Book hotels in Santorini especially early.
- Weather: Sunny and mild, with increasingly warm afternoons as the month progresses.
- Temperatures: Daytime highs rise from about 21°C (70°F) in early May to around 25°C (77°F) late in the month.
- Evenings: Cool enough for a light jacket or sweater, especially on the caldera and during sunset cruises.
- Swimming: The sea is around 19°C (66°F). Cold-tolerant swimmers get in, particularly late in May, but most visitors find it brisk.
- Crowds: Lively in Fira and Oia, especially during cruise-ship hours, but much easier than June through September.
- Prices: Better hotel value than summer, though the best caldera rooms remain expensive.
- What Is Open: Nearly all hotels, restaurants, wineries, tours, and attractions are operating, with strong ferry service on the main routes.
- Main Downside: The sea and many unheated pools remain cooler than the air suggests.
Early May vs. Late May
- Early May: Quieter, greener, and cooler. This is an excellent time for the Fira-to-Oia hike, photography, village walks, and better hotel prices. Evenings are chilly, and beach towns remain subdued.
- Mid May: The island feels fully operational without peak-season crowds. Boat tours, wineries, restaurants, ferry routes, and beach businesses are all active.
- Late May: Warmer, busier, and much closer to summer. Beach restaurants and nightlife gain energy, swimming becomes more realistic, and hotel prices rise as June approaches.
For most first-time visitors, late May is the better choice. Early May is stronger for hiking, spring scenery, lower prices, and quieter mornings in Oia and Imerovigli.
What Is Open in Santorini in May?
May is part of Santorini’s main travel season. Nearly everything visitors need is open across the island.
- Hotels: Caldera hotels, beach resorts, boutique properties, and luxury hotels are operating throughout May.
- Restaurants: Fira and Oia have the widest choice, with plenty of good options in Firostefani, Imerovigli, Pyrgos, Kamari, Perissa, and Perivolos. Reserve important sunset dinners and special-occasion restaurants.
- Boat Tours: Caldera cruises, volcano tours, sunset trips, and private charters run regularly, weather permitting.
- Wineries: Major wineries and tasting rooms are open, with comfortable conditions for outdoor terraces.
- Beach Clubs: Beach restaurants and organized beach areas are operating in Kamari, Perissa, and Perivolos, with more energy toward the end of May.
- Attractions: Ancient Akrotiri, Ancient Thera, museums, archaeological sites, and churches are open.
- Nightlife: Fira has active bars and late-night venues. Oia and the beach towns have more evening energy later in the month.
- Ferries: Main routes to Athens, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Milos, Ios, and Crete are operating, though not every connection runs with peak-summer frequency.
May Weather in Santorini
May weather is close to ideal for sightseeing. Afternoons are warm enough for outdoor meals and poolside time but comfortable for hiking and village walks.
Daytime highs rise from about 21°C (70°F) at the start of May to around 25°C (77°F) near the end. Sunny afternoons can feel warmer in sheltered villages, while exposed caldera paths, boat decks, and cliffside terraces feel cooler in the wind.
Evenings remain cool, particularly in early May. Bring a light jacket or sweater for sunset dinners and boat tours. Rain is uncommon but still possible, especially during the first half of the month. Strong summer meltemi winds are less of an issue than in July and August, though breezy days are part of life on Santorini in every season.
Santorini is especially photogenic in May. The landscape is greener than in summer, the air is clearer, and the whitewashed villages are easier to photograph without midsummer haze and glare (and crowds).
Can You Swim in Santorini in May?
Yes, but the water is cool. The sea averages around 19°C (66°F), with late May noticeably better than early May. Hardy swimmers will jump in on sunny afternoons. But most visitors will find the sea refreshing rather than relaxing and won’t spend long periods in the water.
Unheated hotel pools feel colder than expected, particularly when shaded or exposed to wind. If swimming at your hotel matters, book one of the Santorini hotels with a heated pool and ask what water temperature the hotel maintains during your dates. Some properties warm pools only a few degrees, while others keep them genuinely comfortable.
June or September is better for travelers building the trip around swimming. May is better for mixing a brief swim with hiking, wineries, sightseeing, and boat tours.
Best Things to Do in Santorini in May

Venetsanos Winery in May, when the landscape is still green and temperatures are perfect for outdoor tastings.
- Hike from Fira to Oia: May is one of the best months for the caldera trail. Start in the morning, carry water, and wear shoes with good grip.
- Visit Santorini’s Wineries: Spring vineyards are attractive, tasting terraces are comfortable, and wineries are less rushed than in peak summer.
- Take a Caldera Boat Tour: May is excellent for sailing, volcano visits, and sunset cruises. Bring a warm layer for the return after dark.
- Explore the Caldera Villages: Oia, Fira, Firostefani, and Imerovigli are much easier to walk than in July or August. Visit Oia early in the morning or after the midday cruise crowds leave.
- Visit Pyrgos, Megalochori, and Emporio: May temperatures are ideal for wandering inland villages, climbing steps, and stopping for a long lunch.
- Visit Ancient Akrotiri: The covered archaeological site works well in sunshine, wind, or light rain.
- Visit Ancient Thera: Go in the morning before the exposed site becomes warm and windy.
- Spend an Afternoon at the Beach: Kamari, Perissa, and Perivolos are good for sunbathing and a seaside lunch. Treat a long swim as a bonus.
Where to Stay in Santorini in May
May is one of the best months to book a caldera hotel. You get the views, sunsets, service, and romance of Santorini without the highest summer rates.
- Imerovigli: My favorite May base for couples and honeymooners. It has Santorini’s best caldera views, excellent luxury hotels, and a peaceful atmosphere.
- Firostefani: The best mix of caldera views, quiet evenings, and practical access to Fira. Central Fira is about a 10 to 15-minute walk.
- Fira: Best for first-time visitors who want restaurants, buses, shopping, nightlife, and simple logistics.
- Oia: Best for postcard beauty, romance, and sunset views. Stay overnight to enjoy the village early in the morning and after day visitors leave.
- Beach Towns: Kamari and Perissa work best in late May for travelers prioritizing value and beach access. The caldera towns are better for most first visits.
- Quieter Alternatives: Pyrgos and Akrotiri suit repeat visitors with a rental car who value village atmosphere, space, and lower prices over convenience.
For most May trips, choose Imerovigli, Firostefani, Fira, or Oia. See my full guide to Where to Stay in Santorini.
What to Book Before You Arrive
- Hotels: Book early for a specific caldera-view room, private plunge pool, or highly rated honeymoon hotel. The best rooms sell well before May.
- Boat Tours: Reserve popular sunset cruises in advance and schedule the tour near the beginning of your stay in case wind forces a change.
- Ferries: Check schedules before reserving a multi-island itinerary. May has good service, but not every route runs daily.
- Restaurants: Reserve the sunset dinners and special-occasion meals that matter most. Most other restaurants can be booked a few days ahead.
A rental car is useful for wineries, beaches, Akrotiri, Pyrgos, and quieter villages but unnecessary for travelers staying in Fira and using buses, tours, and transfers. Pre-book airport or port transportation when arriving late, traveling with children, or carrying substantial luggage.

A May ferry arrival at Athinios port. Less chaotic than peak summer, but still busy.
Ferries and Island Hopping in May
May is a good month for Greek island hopping. Ferries connect Santorini with Athens, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Milos, Ios, and Crete, though some routes do not yet operate with peak-summer frequency.
Check schedules before booking nonrefundable hotels, particularly for less frequent routes. My Greek ferry guide covers the basics, with detailed pages for Athens to Santorini, Santorini to Mykonos, and Santorini to Crete.
Do not connect from a ferry directly to an important international flight. Spend the final night in Athens before flying home.
May 1 warning: May 1 is Labor Day in Greece and frequently brings ferry and public-transport strikes. Avoid scheduling an important ferry journey that day and try to be settled on the island by April 30.
May Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming May feels like July: Days are pleasant, but evenings are cool and the sea remains brisk.
- Choosing a beach hotel for a caldera trip: Stay in Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, or Oia when views, restaurants, and romance matter more than beach access.
- Ignoring cruise-ship schedules in Oia: The village can still become busy at midday. Visit early or return after day visitors leave.
- Booking an unheated pool without checking: Many attractive hotel pools remain too cold for comfortable use in May.
- Saving the boat tour for your final day: Leave time to reschedule if wind or sea conditions change.
- Building the trip around beaches: Plan hikes, wineries, villages, and boat tours first. Treat beach time as an extra.

Dinner at Metaxi Mas in May. The outdoor seating is lovely, but bring a light jacket once the sun goes down.
What to Pack for Santorini in May
- Light daytime clothes: T-shirts, shirts, dresses, shorts, and breathable layers.
- Jacket or sweater: Essential for evenings, sunsets, and boat tours.
- Comfortable walking shoes: Santorini has cobblestones, steps, uneven lanes, and exposed hiking paths.
- Swimwear and sun protection: Bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for beaches, pools, and boat tours.
May Compared with April and June
- May vs. April: April is greener, quieter, and cheaper but cooler and less fully operational. May is the better first-trip choice, with warmer weather, more tours, and more dependable restaurant and ferry schedules.
- May vs. June: June is warmer and better for swimming, beach time, and nightlife. May is better for hiking, hotel value, spring scenery, and avoiding peak crowds.
Choose May for active sightseeing, romance, wineries, and comfortable weather. Choose June when warm water and beach time matter more.
