The back alleyways of Oia, Santorini on an afternoon in May.
May is one of my favorite months in Santorini: warm but not hot, busy but not overwhelmed, beautiful but not yet expensive in the way July and August can be. The island feels awake, green, and photogenic, with most hotels, restaurants, tours, and beach businesses open for the season.
The main trade-off is the sea. May is shoulder season, not full summer. The weather is usually excellent for hiking, sightseeing, wineries, photography, and caldera-view hotel stays, but the water is still cool and beach days are not guaranteed. For warm swimming and full summer energy, choose June, July, August, or September. For value, romance, views, and exploring, May is one of the best months of the year.
Is May a Good Time to Visit Santorini?
Yes. May is a great time to visit Santorini, especially for couples, honeymooners, hikers, photographers, and first-time visitors who want the island to feel lively without the peak-summer crush.
May is best if your priorities are caldera views, outdoor meals, wine tasting, walking the cliff path, exploring villages, taking photos, and getting better value at caldera-view hotels. It is less ideal if your dream trip is built around hot sea swimming, late-night beach clubs, and guaranteed shorts-and-sandals weather from breakfast to midnight.
By May, Santorini is well into its travel season. But it still does not feel like July or August. Early May can feel springlike and slightly transitional. Late May feels much more like the beginning of summer.
May at a Glance
- Weather: Usually sunny, mild, and increasingly warm. Early May feels like spring; late May often feels like early summer.
- Daytime temperatures: Roughly 21°C to 25°C (70°F to 77°F), warmer toward the end of the month.
- Evenings: Cool enough that you should pack a light jacket or sweater, especially for caldera dinners and sunset boat tours.
- Sea temperature: Around 19°C (66°F). Fine for a quick dip, cool for long swims.
- Crowds: Lively in Fira and Oia, especially during cruise-ship hours, but much easier than June through September.
- Prices: Better than summer, especially for luxury and caldera-view hotels. Santorini is never cheap, but May can be excellent value.
- Best for: Honeymoons, hiking, wineries, sightseeing, photography, village exploring, boat tours, and lower hotel rates.
- Main downside: Not every day feels like summer, and the sea is cooler than many visitors expect.
Early May vs. Late May
- Early May: Quieter, greener, and more springlike. It is a beautiful time for the Fira to Oia hike, photography, and caldera hotel value. Evenings can feel cool, and some smaller seasonal businesses may still be settling into their rhythm.
- Late May: Warmer, busier, and more summery. Beach restaurants, tours, nightlife, and ferry routes feel more active, and swimming becomes more realistic for hardy swimmers. Prices rise as June approaches.
If you want the best mix of warm weather, good value, and a lively but not packed island, the second half of May is usually the sweet spot. If you want lower prices, spring flowers, and quieter lanes in Oia and Imerovigli, early May is wonderful.
What to Book Before You Arrive
- Hotels: Book early if you want a specific caldera-view hotel in Imerovigli, Firostefani, Fira, or Oia. May is cheaper than peak summer, but the best-view rooms still book out.
- Boat tours: May is a great month for a Santorini boat tour. Book early if you want a sunset cruise, but avoid scheduling it for your final day in case wind forces a change.
- Wine tours: Outdoor terraces are lovely in May, and wineries are much more comfortable than in the heat of August. Book ahead for guided Santorini wine tours, especially for sunset tastings.
- Ferries: Ferries run in May, but schedules are lighter than peak summer. Check routes early, especially for Athens to Santorini, Santorini to Mykonos, Santorini to Naxos, Santorini to Paros, and Santorini to Crete.
- Rental cars: You do not need a car if you are staying in Fira and using buses or taxis, but a rental car is useful in May for wineries, beaches, Akrotiri, Pyrgos, and quieter villages. See my guide to renting a car in Santorini.
- Restaurants: Most good restaurants are open by May. Book a few days ahead for famous sunset restaurants, small village tavernas, and special-occasion meals. See my Santorini restaurant guide.
- Airport and port transfers: May is not August, but arrivals can still be chaotic at the airport and Athinios ferry port. If you are arriving late, traveling with kids, or staying in Oia or Imerovigli, a pre-booked Santorini transfer is often worth it.

A ferry arrival in May: Much less chaotic than peak summer but still busy.
Where to Stay in Santorini in May
May is one of the best months to splurge on a caldera hotel. You get the views, sunsets, service, and romance of Santorini without the highest summer rates.
- Imerovigli: My favorite May base for couples and honeymooners. It has the best caldera views, a peaceful atmosphere, and excellent luxury hotels. May is a great time to get better value here than in peak summer.
- Firostefani: A smart choice if you want caldera views, quieter evenings, and easy walking access to Fira. It is practical, romantic, and less hectic than Oia.
- Fira: Best for first-time visitors who want restaurants, buses, nightlife, shopping, and easy logistics. In May, Fira feels lively but not overwhelming.
- Oia: Best for postcard beauty, romance, and sunset views. Oia is less crowded in May than summer, but cruise-ship hours can still be busy. Stay overnight to enjoy the village early and late.
- Kamari and Perissa: Good value if you want beach access and a more casual base. Better in late May than early May. Choose these only if you understand that May is not guaranteed beach weather.
- Pyrgos: Excellent for a quieter, more local-feeling stay with good restaurants and central access by car. A strong May choice for repeat visitors.
- Akrotiri: Best for quiet views, archaeology, and lower-key romance. Less convenient without a car, but good for travelers who want to avoid the busier caldera villages.
For most May visitors, I would choose Imerovigli, Firostefani, Fira, or Oia over the beach towns. If swimming and beach restaurants are your main priorities, late May is better than early May, and June is better still. For a full breakdown, see Where to Stay in Santorini.
Weather, Swimming, and Spring Light
May weather in Santorini is usually sunny, dry, and comfortable. Daytime highs rise from about 21°C (70°F) in early May to around 25°C (77°F) by the end of the month. Nights are cooler, often around 14°C to 18°C (58°F to 65°F), so a light jacket is useful.
Rain is possible, especially in early May, but it is much less common than in winter or early spring. Wind is always possible on Santorini, particularly along the caldera edge and on boat trips, but May is generally less affected by the stronger meltemi winds of July and August.
The sea is the biggest reality check. Average water temperature is around 19°C (66°F). Some visitors swim happily, especially in late May on sunny afternoons. Others find it too cold for more than a quick dip. If swimming matters, book a hotel with a pool and confirm whether it is heated. A “heated pool” does not always mean warm every day in May.
May light is beautiful. The island is greener than in summer, the air is often clear, and the whitewashed villages photograph well without the harsh glare and haze of peak season. For photography, hiking, and outdoor meals, May is close to ideal.
Best Things to Do in May

Venetsanos Winery in May, when the landscape is still green and temperatures are perfect for outdoor tastings.
- Fira to Oia hike: May is one of the best months of the year for the caldera hike. It is warm but not brutally hot, and the landscape is still greener than in summer.
- Wineries: Santorini’s vineyards are especially attractive in spring, and outdoor tasting terraces are comfortable. Venetsanos, Santo Wines, Estate Argyros, and Gavalas are all excellent choices.
- Boat tours: Catamaran and caldera cruises are usually running, and May is a great month to be on the water. Bring a layer for the return after sunset.
- Village exploring: Oia, Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, Pyrgos, Megalochori, and Emporio are much more pleasant to wander in May than in August.
- Ancient Akrotiri: One of the best bad-weather or windy-day activities, and much more comfortable before summer heat arrives.
- Ancient Thera: Best done in the morning. May temperatures are much better for this exposed archaeological site than July or August.
- Beach time: Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos, and Red Beach can be lovely on warm May afternoons. Think seaside lunch and sunbathing, not guaranteed long swims.
- Walking tours: May is excellent for guided walks, photography tours, food tours, and history-focused exploring.
Ferries and Island Hopping in May
May is a good month for Greek island hopping, but it is not as full-service as July, August, or early September. Main routes are usually operating, but schedules are lighter, and not every seasonal connection runs daily.
The easiest May combinations are Athens and Santorini, or Santorini with nearby Cyclades islands such as Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, or Milos. Crete is also possible, but schedules should be checked carefully. Start with my Greek ferry guide and route pages for Athens to Santorini, Santorini to Mykonos, Santorini to Naxos, Santorini to Paros, Santorini to Crete, and Santorini to Milos.
Do not plan a same-day ferry connection to an international flight out of Athens. Even in May, wind, strikes, mechanical issues, and schedule changes can happen. Spend your final night in Athens before flying home.
May 1 warning: May 1 is Labor Day in Greece and often brings transport strikes. Ferries are the most likely to be affected, and flights or public transport can occasionally be disrupted. In most years, I would avoid planning an important ferry transfer on May 1 and would try to be settled on the island by April 30.
What Surprises People About May
- It is not summer every day. May can be warm and sunny, but it can also be breezy, cool at night, or briefly unsettled.
- The sea can feel cold. The air may feel like summer, but the water is still springlike.
- Late May feels very different from early May. The last 10 days of the month are warmer, livelier, and much closer to June.
- Caldera hotels can be excellent value. May is one of the best months to book a room with a view before peak rates arrive.
- Oia can still get crowded midday. Cruise ships are active in May, so visit Oia early morning or late afternoon when possible.
- Evenings require a layer. Outdoor dinners, sunset viewpoints, and boat trips can feel chilly after dark.
May Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming May will feel like July. It will not. Pack for spring, not just summer.
- Choosing a beach hotel for a caldera trip. If your dream is views, sunsets, restaurants, and romance, stay in Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, or Oia.
- Not packing a light jacket. You will probably use it at night.
- Leaving ferry planning too loose. May has plenty of ferry service, but fewer choices than peak summer.
- Booking a boat tour on your last day. Leave room to reschedule if wind or sea conditions change.
- Expecting every pool to be warm. Many hotel pools are unheated, and even “heated” pools vary. Confirm directly if this matters.
- Overcommitting to beaches. Plan for hikes, wineries, villages, and boat tours first; treat beach time as a bonus.

Dinner at Metaxi Mas in May. The outdoor seating is lovely, but a light jacket is usually needed once the sun goes down.
What to Pack for Santorini in May
- Daytime clothes: T-shirts, light shirts, shorts, skirts, dresses, and breathable layers.
- Evening layer: A light jacket, sweater, or fleece for dinners, sunsets, and boat tours.
- Walking shoes: Essential for cobblestones, stairs, village lanes, and the Fira-Oia hike.
- Beach basics: Swimsuit, cover-up, sandals, and sunglasses. You may get beach weather, especially late in the month.
- Sun protection: High-SPF sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. The breeze can make the sun feel weaker than it is.
- Boat-tour layer: A windbreaker or warm sweater for sunset cruises.
- Small day bag: Useful for water, sunscreen, camera, and a layer when walking between villages.
May vs. Other Months
- May vs. April: April is greener, cheaper, and quieter, but weather is less reliable and more businesses may still be seasonal. May feels more ready for visitors and is a better first-trip choice.
- May vs. June: June is warmer, more summery, and better for swimming. May is better for hiking, value, photography, and avoiding peak crowds.
- May vs. September: September has warmer sea and more established summer energy. May has greener landscapes, cooler hiking weather, and usually better hotel value. Both are excellent shoulder-season months.
- May vs. July and August: July and August are hotter, busier, more expensive, and better for nightlife and beach energy. May is more comfortable, romantic, and manageable.

May is better for hiking, sightseeing, lower hotel prices, greenery, and avoiding crowds. June is better for swimming, beach time, nightlife, and a more reliable summer feel. I prefer May for active sightseeing and romance; I prefer June for beach-oriented trips.
