Boats in the Santorini caldera in June.

June is one of the best months to visit Santorini if you want hot weather, swimmable beaches, and a fully operational island without the absolute peak crushing crowds of July and August. Early June feels more manageable; late June effectively begins the high season.

June at a Glance

  • Best For: Swimming, boat tours, sunset dinners, and lively beach clubs.
  • Less Ideal For: Budget travelers, hikers who dislike heat, or those seeking total solitude.
  • Book Ahead: Caldera-view hotels (4-6 months), sunset catamaran cruises, and high-end dinner reservations.
  • Key Vibe: Full summer energy, long days, and clear skies.

Early June vs. Late June

There is a distinct “tale of two Junes” on the island.

  • Early June: This is the tail end of the shoulder season. You will often find more availability at popular boutique hotels and slightly more breathing room in the narrow streets of Oia. The weather is warm, but the island hasn’t reached its peak heat or density.
  • Late June: The switch flips. The island is in full summer mode. Crowds at sunset spots increase significantly, and the nightlife energy in Fira hits its stride. Expect higher prices and a much busier feel at the ferry ports and airport.

Weather and Climate: The Summer Reality

Expect proper summer weather. Days are hot and sunny with virtually zero chance of rain.

  • Temperature: Daytime highs generally rise from 26°C (79°F) to 29°C (84°F) as the month progresses. While the air is hot, it is the intensity of the sun that surprises most visitors. Shade is rare on the caldera.
  • The Meltemi Winds: June often marks the arrival of these northern winds. While the breeze makes the heat more tolerable on land, it can make the sea choppy. Even on a hot day, a breezy caldera-side table at night might feel cool enough to warrant a light layer.
  • Daylight: You get 14 to 15 hours of daylight, giving you maximum time for sightseeing and long, late lunches.

Swimming and Beaches

By June, the Aegean has warmed up significantly, making it the first month of the year that is truly reliable for a beach holiday.

  • Sea Temperature: The water averages 22°C to 23°C (72°F to 73°F). It is refreshing and crisp, and certainly warmer than May, but not as “bath-warm” as it becomes in August or September.
  • The Black Sand: The volcanic sand at Perissa and Kamari absorbs heat quickly. By noon, it can be painfully hot. While not strictly “essential” for everyone, water shoes or sandals are strongly recommended for walking from your sunbed to the water.

Top Activities and Tours

By June, the vast majority of hotels, tours, restaurants, and beach venues are open and operating at full capacity.

  • Boat Tours: June is one of the better months for a catamaran cruise, offering great swimming conditions at the Hot Springs and Red Beach. A Note on Realism: While the sea is often calm, windy days can and do happen. Smaller boats may feel the chop more than larger catamarans, and itineraries are sometimes adjusted for safety.
  • Winery Tours: Santorini’s wineries are at their most beautiful in June. Enjoying a glass of Assyrtiko on a sun-drenched terrace is a highlight. Popular spots like Santo Wines and Venetsanos should be booked well in advance, especially for sunset slots.
  • Nightlife: Fira is the heart of the action, with cliffside bars and clubs busy every night. The beach clubs in Perivolos also begin hosting regular parties and international DJs by mid-month.

The Fira to Oia Hike

June is a fantastic month for this iconic walk along the caldera, but you must be practical about the conditions.

  • Start Early: I recommend hitting the trail no later than 8:30 or 9:00 AM. There is almost zero shade on the path, and the midday sun can be punishing.
  • Preparation: Bring more water than you think you need, wear proper walking shoes (not flimsy flip-flops), and use high-SPF sunscreen. The views remain crystal clear, but the heat makes the final stretch into Oia much more taxing.

What to Pack for June

  • Sun Protection: A wide-brimmed hat, quality sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen.
  • Evening Layers: A light sweater or linen jacket for breezy dinners by the caldera.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes for the cobbles and aqua socks for the hot volcanic sand on the beach.

June vs. Other Months

  • June vs. May: May is greener and significantly cheaper for accommodation. However, the sea is often too cold for most swimmers in May. June offers more reliable “beach weather” and a livelier island atmosphere.
  • June vs. July: July is hotter, pricier, and significantly more crowded. June provides the same “summer” experience with slightly more manageable foot traffic in Oia and Fira.
  • June vs. September: September is my personal favorite, as the sea is at its warmest and the heat is slightly softer. However, if you want the longest possible days and that “start of summer” excitement, June is hard to beat.

Frequently Asked Questions: Santorini in June

Is June actually warm enough for swimming?
Yes. While the water isn’t “bath-warm” like it is in August, it reaches a comfortable 22°C (72°F). This is the first month of the year where the sea feels truly inviting for a long swim rather than just a quick dip.

How do I handle the June sun on the Fira-Oia hike?
Start early. I tell everyone to be on the trail by 8:30 AM at the latest. There is no shade, and by noon, the sun is intense. Carry twice the water you think you need and wear high-SPF sunscreen.

Will the Meltemi winds cancel my boat tour?
It is possible but rare for a total cancellation in June. More often, the itinerary is adjusted to stay in the calmer waters of the caldera. I recommend booking your boat tour for one of your first days on the island so you have “buffer days” in case of a weather delay.

What should I pack for June evenings?
While days are hot, the caldera breeze can make cliffside dining feel surprisingly cool. I always recommend packing a light linen jacket or a thin sweater for outdoor dinners.

Is it worth staying in Oia in June despite the crowds?
If your budget allows, staying in Oia is still magical in June because you get the village to yourself in the early morning before the cruise ships arrive. Just be prepared for the heavy sunset foot traffic right outside your door in the evenings.

Do I need a rental car in June, or is the bus okay?
The local KTEL bus is reliable and offers an expanded schedule in June, though it does get crowded. If you want to explore the hidden wineries or smaller villages on your own schedule, a rental car is more convenient, but you should book it weeks in advance.
