Is June a Good Time to Visit Santorini?

Yes. June is one of the best months to visit Santorini. The island feels fully awake: hot sunny days, long evenings, open restaurants, running ferries, beach clubs in full swing, swimmable sea, and boat tours leaving all day, every day.

But June is not a secret season. Early June still has a little breathing room. Late June is basically high season, with higher prices, busier ferries, tighter restaurant bookings, and Oia sunset crowds that feel very close to July.

The main downside is price. A good caldera hotel in June is not cheap. Neither are private transfers, sunset restaurants, catamaran cruises, or last-minute rental cars. If you want the best rooms, views, and times, book ahead.

June at a Glance

  • Weather: Hot, sunny, dry, and reliably summery. Typical daytime highs run about 26°C to 29°C (79°F to 84°F), hotter during heat waves.
  • Sea: 22°C to 23°C (72°F to 73°F). Good for swimming, though not as warm as August or September.
  • Crowds: Busy, especially Oia at sunset, Fira at night, the ferry port, Ammoudi, beach clubs, and popular boat tours.
  • Prices: High. Early June is better value. Late June is much closer to peak season.
  • Best For: Honeymoons, boat tours, wineries, caldera hotels, beaches, nightlife, and island hopping.
  • Main Tradeoff: Great weather and full island energy, but fewer bargains and less spontaneity than many travelers expect.

Early June vs. Late June

June has two different moods.

Early June is warm, lively, and still a little relaxed. Hotels and restaurants are busy, but not yet at their most frantic. This is my favorite window for a honeymoon, a first Santorini trip, or a beach-and-caldera vacation.

Late June is hotter, more expensive, and noticeably busier. Sunset restaurants need reservations, boat tours fill up, rental cars are less flexible, and the port can feel chaotic when several ferries arrive close together.

For most travelers, early to mid-June is the sweet spot. Late June is still excellent, but it needs more planning and a bigger budget.

What to Book Before You Arrive

You do not need to schedule every hour of a June trip, but the best-value pieces should be booked before arrival.

  • Hotels: Book caldera-view hotels early, especially in Imerovigli, Oia, Firostefani, and Fira. Rooms with private pools, sunset views, and terraces disappear first. Start with Where to Stay in Santorini and Best Hotels in Santorini.
  • Boat Tours: June is excellent for Santorini boat tours. Book ahead and schedule the cruise for one of your first full days. Wind can change routes or timing, so do not leave it until your final day.
  • Ferries: Main routes are strong in June, but popular high-speed ferries can sell out or leave only awkward seat options. Book ahead for fixed itineraries, especially Athens to Santorini, Santorini to Mykonos, Santorini to Naxos, Santorini to Paros, and Santorini to Crete.
  • Wineries: Book sunset tastings and wine tours ahead. Santo Wines and Venetsanos have famous views, but they are not hidden gems. For a better wine-focused experience, consider a small-group tour that includes Estate Argyros, Gavalas, Gaia, or Art Space. See my guide to the best Santorini wineries.
  • Rental Cars: You do not need a car if you stay in Fira and plan to use buses, tours, taxis, and transfers. A car is very useful for beaches, wineries, Pyrgos, Megalochori, Akrotiri, and quieter hotels. If you want one in June, reserve before you arrive. See renting a car in Santorini.
  • Restaurants: Book special dinners and sunset-view tables several days ahead, longer for the best caldera restaurants. You can always find somewhere to eat, but the best tables in June are not last-minute walk-ins. See my best restaurants in Santorini.
  • Transfers: Pre-book airport and port transfers if you are arriving late, traveling with kids, staying in Oia, Imerovigli, Akrotiri, or a villa, or simply do not want to deal with the taxi queue. See Santorini taxis and transfers, Santorini Airport, and Santorini Port.

Where to Stay in Santorini in June

June is a great month to pay for a caldera hotel. The weather is warm enough to use the pool and terrace, evenings are long, and the island has energy without the worst of August.

  • Imerovigli: My favorite June base for couples. Best for quiet luxury, caldera views, sunset, and hotels with pools. Less convenient for nightlife, but that is part of the appeal.
  • Firostefani: A smart middle ground. Beautiful views, calmer than Fira, and still an easy walk to restaurants, nightlife, buses, and shops.
  • Fira: Best for convenience. Choose Fira if you want buses, restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and easy logistics without renting a car. It is not the most romantic village, but it is the most practical.
  • Oia: Best for romance, boutique hotels, and postcard Santorini. Gorgeous early in the morning, crowded at sunset. Staying in Oia is much nicer than visiting Oia at sunset.
  • Kamari and Perissa: Best for beach time, families, lower prices, and a relaxed summer-holiday feel. Choose these if swimming and easy meals by the beach matter more than caldera views.
  • Pyrgos: Best for village atmosphere, sunset views, wineries, and a quieter stay. Lovely in June, but much easier with a rental car.
  • Akrotiri: Best for space, privacy, villas, caldera views, and access to Ancient Akrotiri and the south coast. Peaceful, but not ideal without a car or pre-booked transfers.

For a first trip, stay in Imerovigli, Firostefani, Fira, or Oia. For beach trips, choose Kamari or Perissa. For repeat visitors or travelers who want a quieter base, Pyrgos, Megalochori, and Akrotiri can be excellent.

Weather, Swimming, and Summer Light

June is real summer in Santorini. Expect hot sunny days, strong sun, very little rain, and long evenings.

  • Daytime Temperatures: Highs are around 26°C to 29°C (79°F to 84°F). Late June is hotter than early June, and heat waves can push temperatures higher.
  • Evenings: Warm, but the caldera breeze can make dinner terraces feel cooler than expected. Bring one light layer.
  • Rain: Rare. Most June trips are dry from start to finish.
  • Sea Temperature: 22°C to 23°C (72°F to 73°F). Comfortable for most swimmers, still refreshing early in the month or on windy days.
  • Wind: The Meltemi can start to show up in June. It is stronger in July and August, but June can still bring choppy boat tours and bumpy high-speed ferry rides.
  • Daylight: June has some of the longest days of the year, with roughly 14 to 15 hours of daylight. This is a big advantage over spring and autumn.
  • Sun: The sun is intense. The caldera has little shade, and the black-sand beaches get very hot underfoot.

June is warm enough for pools, beaches, boat tours, and outdoor dinners. It is also hot enough that hikes, village walks, and archaeological sites are best done early.

Best Things to Do in June

June is one of the easiest months for planning because almost everything is open, the days are long, and the weather is dependable.

  • Take a Boat Tour: This is a June highlight. Catamaran cruises are the best option for swimming, food, and caldera views. Volcano tours are cheaper and more sightseeing-focused. Sunset cruises are beautiful but book early.
  • Visit the Wineries: June is excellent for Santorini wineries. The vines are green, terraces are busy, and sunset tastings are in demand. Book a tour if you want to drink properly without driving.
  • Hike from Fira to Oia: The Fira-Oia hike is spectacular in June, but start early. There is very little shade and the final stretch into Oia can feel brutally hot by late morning.
  • Go to the Beach: Kamari, Perissa, and Perivolos are the easiest beaches for swimming, sunbeds, restaurants, and families. The sand gets hot, so bring sandals or water shoes. See my guide to the best beaches in Santorini.
  • Explore Villages Early or Late: Oia, Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, Pyrgos, and Megalochori are best before 10 AM or in the late afternoon. Midday is for pools, beaches, lunch, or a shaded terrace.
  • Visit Ancient Akrotiri: Ancient Akrotiri is one of the island’s best sights and a good hot-day activity because the site is covered.
  • Book One Sunset Dinner: Do one proper caldera-view dinner, but do not plan every evening around sunset. Some of the best meals on Santorini are not sunset-view meals.
  • Use Fira for Nightlife: June is when Santorini nightlife starts to feel properly summery. Fira is the main hub for bars, clubs, and late dinners.

The Fira to Oia Hike in June

June is a fantastic month for the Fira to Oia hike, but only if you treat it like a summer hike.

  • Start Early: Be walking by 8 AM, earlier in late June. By late morning, the exposed sections can be punishing.
  • Carry Water: Bring more than you think you need. Do not count on finding water exactly when you want it.
  • Wear Real Shoes: The path has cobbles, gravel, steps, and uneven volcanic dirt. Sneakers are much better than sandals or flip-flops.
  • Use Sun Protection: Hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential. The breeze makes it easy to underestimate the sun.
  • Do Not Hike at Sunset: It sounds romantic, but it is not my favorite plan. The trail is uneven, transport back can be annoying, and Oia is most crowded right when you arrive.

Ferries and Island Hopping in June

June is one of the best months for Greek island hopping. Ferry schedules are strong, the weather is summery, and the Cyclades are fully open without the absolute heaviest August crowds.

Santorini combines well with Naxos, Paros, Mykonos, Milos, and Crete. If you are coming from Athens, compare flying vs. taking the ferry from Athens to Santorini.

Book high-speed ferries ahead if your dates are fixed. Bigger conventional ferries are slower but more stable in windy conditions. High-speed catamarans are faster but can feel rougher when the sea is choppy.

Do not make a tight same-day connection from a ferry arrival to an international flight. Ferries are generally reliable in June, but wind, port congestion, and schedule changes happen. If your flight home leaves from Athens, spend the final night in Athens or leave a large buffer.

Cruise Crowds in June

Cruise ships matter in June. They do not ruin the island, but they can completely change how Oia and Fira feel for a few hours.

The worst combination is a big cruise-ship day plus late afternoon in Oia. If you are staying overnight on Santorini, use your advantage: visit Oia early in the morning, stay at your hotel pool during the busiest afternoon hours, and save village walks for later.

For sunset, I prefer Imerovigli, Firostefani, a boat tour, or a good hotel terrace over fighting the crowd at the Oia Castle ruins. Oia sunset is famous for a reason, but it is not the only good sunset on Santorini.

What Surprises People About June

  • June is already busy: It is not low season. Late June is high season in most practical ways.
  • The best rooms sell early: Private pools, caldera views, and honeymoon suites are the first to go.
  • The sea is good, not bath-warm: Swimming is enjoyable, but the water is warmer in August and September.
  • Oia sunset is not peaceful: It can be beautiful, but it is crowded. For a calmer sunset, stay in Imerovigli or book a boat tour.
  • Transport takes planning: Taxis are limited. Buses work best from Fira. Remote hotels need a car or transfer plan.
  • Black sand gets hot: Kamari, Perissa, and Perivolos can be painful barefoot by midday.

June Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming June is shoulder season: Early June has some shoulder-season feel. Late June does not.
  • Waiting too long to book caldera hotels: The best rooms and views are rarely last-minute bargains.
  • Booking your boat tour on your last day: Wind can affect plans. Schedule it early in your stay.
  • Starting the Fira-Oia hike too late: This is the most common June mistake. Start early or skip it.
  • Making tight ferry-flight connections: Leave a buffer, especially before international flights.
  • Choosing a remote hotel without transport: A beautiful villa can become frustrating if every dinner requires a difficult taxi.
  • Overplanning Oia: Visit once early, maybe again for dinner, but do not build the whole trip around Oia sunset.
  • Ignoring heat at outdoor sites: Ancient Akrotiri is covered and easier. Ancient Thera is more exposed and best early.

June vs. Other Months

  • June vs. May: May is cheaper, greener, and less crowded. June is better for swimming, beach clubs, boat tours, nightlife, and a true summer feel.
  • June vs. July: July is hotter, busier, and more expensive. June gives you most of the summer benefits with slightly less pressure.
  • June vs. August: August has warmer sea and the strongest peak-season buzz, but also the biggest crowds, highest prices, and most stressful logistics. June is easier for most travelers.
  • June vs. September: September has warmer sea and softer heat. June has longer days and fresher summer energy. I slightly prefer September for swimming, but June is excellent for long days, hiking early, and island hopping.

Is June good for families?
Yes, especially for families who want beach time, boat tours, pools, and warm weather. Kamari and Perissa are good family bases, while Fira is useful for buses and logistics. Families should book transfers and hotels ahead and avoid long walks during the hottest part of the day. See Santorini with kids.

Is June good for a boat tour?
Yes. June is one of the best months for Santorini boat tours. The weather is warm, the sea is swimmable, and sunset cruises are beautiful. Book ahead and do not leave the tour until your final day in case wind affects the schedule.

Are wineries open in June?
Yes. Santorini wineries are open and busy in June. Sunset tastings and popular wine tours should be reserved ahead. June is a wonderful month for Assyrtiko, caldera-view terraces, and combining wineries with Pyrgos, Megalochori, or Akrotiri.

Are ferries running in June?
Yes. June is a strong ferry month for Santorini and the Cyclades. Main routes to Athens, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Crete, Milos, and other islands have good service. Book popular routes ahead, especially high-speed ferries and fixed itineraries. See my Greek ferries guide.

Do I need a rental car in June?
Not always. If you stay in Fira and plan to use buses, taxis, tours, and transfers, you can manage without a car. A rental car is useful for beaches, wineries, Akrotiri, Pyrgos, Megalochori, and hotels outside the main villages. If you want a car in June, book ahead. See renting a car in Santorini.
