The view from Fira in June.

June is one of the best months to visit Santorini. It feels like real summer: hot sunny days, long evenings, open hotels and restaurants, swimmable beaches, busy boat tours, and excellent ferry connections. But it is not low season. Early June is more relaxed and better value; late June feels much closer to July and August.

The best reason to visit in June is simple: you get the classic Santorini summer experience without quite the same peak-season chaos. The main tradeoff is price. Caldera hotels, sunset restaurants, ferries, boat tours, rental cars, and private transfers should all be booked ahead, especially for late June.

Is June a Good Time to Visit Santorini?

Yes. June is one of the best months for Santorini, especially for travelers who want warm weather, beach time, boat tours, wineries, caldera sunsets, and a lively island atmosphere without the most intense crowds of July and August.

June is best for honeymoons, first-time visitors, island hoppers, families with older kids, beach-and-caldera trips, and anyone who wants a reliable summer vacation. It is less ideal for strict budget travelers, heat-sensitive hikers, or travelers hoping for quiet village lanes and easy last-minute hotel deals.

If you want warm weather and long days, June is better than May. If you want fewer crowds and warmer sea, September is better. If you want a classic summer trip but would rather avoid the absolute peak, June is hard to beat.

June at a Glance

  • Weather: Hot, dry, sunny, and reliably summery. Daytime highs are around 26°C to 29°C (79°F to 84°F).
  • Sea: Warm enough for most swimmers, around 22°C to 23°C (72°F to 73°F), but not as warm as August or September.
  • Crowds: Busy, especially in Oia at sunset, Fira in the evenings, beach areas on weekends, and at the ferry port.
  • Prices: High, especially for caldera-view hotels. Early June is better value than late June.
  • Best For: Boat tours, wineries, honeymoons, caldera hotels, beaches, early-morning hiking, and island hopping.
  • Main Downside: June is often described as shoulder season, but by late June it’s very close to peak season.

Early June vs. Late June

June has two different personalities.

  • Early June: Warm, sunny, lively, and a little easier and less hectic. Hotels still require planning, but availability is better than later in the month. Oia and Fira are busy but not yet at full peak-season intensity. This is one of the best times of year for a honeymoon or first Santorini trip.
  • Late June: Hotter, busier, more expensive, and much closer to July. Sunset spots fill earlier, dinner reservations matter more, ferries are busier, and rental cars are less flexible. If you are visiting in late June, book like it is high season.

For most travelers, early to mid-June is the sweet spot. Late June is still excellent, but it requires more advance planning and a higher budget.

What to Book Before You Arrive

June is a strong booking month in Santorini. You do not need to plan every minute, but the high-value parts of the trip should be arranged before arrival.

Where to Stay in Santorini in June

June is a great month to splurge on a caldera hotel. The weather is warm enough to enjoy plunge pools and terraces, the evenings are long, and the island is lively without being quite as overwhelming as August.

  • Imerovigli: Best for honeymoons, caldera views, quiet luxury, and sunset without the Oia crowds. My favorite June base for couples who want beauty and calm.
  • Firostefani: Best for caldera views with easy walks to Fira. A smart choice if you want romance without feeling too isolated.
  • Fira: Best for nightlife, restaurants, buses, shopping, and convenience. The most practical base if you want to explore without renting a car.
  • Oia: Best for romance, boutique hotels, and postcard Santorini. In June, Oia is magical early in the morning and very busy around sunset.
  • Kamari and Perissa: Best for beach time, families, better value, and a more relaxed summer-holiday feel. Choose these if swimming and easy beach days matter more than caldera views.
  • Pyrgos: Best for village atmosphere, sunset views, wineries, and a quieter stay. A rental car makes Pyrgos much easier.
  • Akrotiri: Best for space, views, privacy, and proximity to Ancient Akrotiri and Red Beach. It is peaceful but less convenient without a car or pre-booked transfers.

For a first trip in June, Imerovigli, Firostefani, Fira, and Oia are the safest choices. For beach-focused trips, choose Kamari or Perissa. For quieter, more independent trips, consider Pyrgos, Megalochori, or Akrotiri.

Weather, Swimming, and Summer Light

June is proper summer in Santorini. Expect hot sunny days, very little rain, long evenings, and strong sun.

  • Daytime Temperatures: Highs are around 26°C to 29°C (79°F to 84°F), with late June hotter than early June. Heat waves can push temperatures higher.
  • Evenings: Nights are warm, but the caldera breeze can make outdoor dinners feel cooler than expected. Bring a light layer.
  • Rain: Rain is uncommon in June. Most trips will be dry from start to finish.
  • Sea Temperature: The sea is around 22°C to 23°C (72°F to 73°F). It is pleasant for most swimmers but still refreshing, especially early in the month or on windy days.
  • Wind: The northern Meltemi winds can begin affecting the Cyclades in June. They are stronger later in summer, but windy days can still make boat tours choppier and ferry rides bumpier.
  • Daylight: June has some of the longest days of the year, with roughly 14 to 15 hours of daylight. This is one of the big advantages of visiting before July and August.
  • Sun: The sun is intense. The caldera has very little shade, and the black sand beaches get hot by midday.

June is warm enough for beach days, pool time, boat tours, and late outdoor dinners. But it is also hot enough that hiking, village walks, and archaeological sites are best done early in the day.

Best Things to Do in June

June is one of the easiest months for planning a Santorini itinerary because almost everything is open, weather is reliable, and the days are long.

  • Take a Boat Tour: June is excellent for catamaran cruises, caldera swims, sunset sails, and volcano tours. Book early, especially for sunset cruises. Wind can affect routes, so do not save your boat tour for your final day.
  • Visit the Wineries: June is a great month for Santorini wineries. The vines are green, terraces are beautiful, and sunset tastings are in high demand.
  • Hike from Fira to Oia: The Fira-Oia hike is spectacular in June, but start early. There is little shade and the final stretch into Oia can be very hot by late morning.
  • Plan Beach Time: Kamari, Perissa, and Perivolos are best for easy beach days with sunbeds, restaurants, and swimming. See my guide to the best beaches in Santorini.
  • Explore Villages Early or Late: Oia, Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, Pyrgos, and Megalochori are best in the morning or late afternoon, not in the middle of the day.
  • Visit Ancient Akrotiri: Ancient Akrotiri is one of the best cultural sights on the island and works well on a hot day because the archaeological site is covered.
  • Book a Sunset Dinner: June sunsets are beautiful and dinner reservations matter. Book caldera-view restaurants ahead and do not assume you can walk in for the best tables.
  • Use Fira for Nightlife: June is when Santorini nightlife starts to feel properly summery. Fira is the main hub for bars and clubs.

The Fira to Oia Hike in June

June is a fantastic month for the Fira to Oia hike, but only if you treat it like a summer hike.

  • Start Early: Be on the trail by 8:00 or 8:30 AM. Earlier is better in late June. There is very little shade, and the midday sun can be punishing.
  • Bring Water: Carry more than you think you need. Do not rely on finding water along the trail exactly when you want it.
  • Wear Real Shoes: The path includes cobbles, gravel, and uneven volcanic terrain. Sneakers or walking shoes are much better than flip-flops.
  • Use Sun Protection: Hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential. The breeze can hide how strong the sun is.
  • Consider Direction: Most travelers walk Fira to Oia for the classic approach into Oia. If you are staying in Oia, you can also start there very early and return by bus or taxi from Fira.

Ferries and Island Hopping in June

June is one of the best months for Greek island hopping. Ferry schedules are strong on the main Cyclades routes, the weather is summerlike, and the islands are fully open without the very heaviest crowds of August.

Santorini works well with Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Crete, and Milos. If you are coming from Athens, compare flying vs. taking the ferry from Athens to Santorini.

Book popular high-speed ferries ahead, especially in late June or when you have a fixed itinerary. Bigger conventional ferries are more stable in windy conditions; high-speed catamarans are faster but can feel rougher when the sea is choppy.

Do not plan a tight same-day connection from a ferry arrival to an international flight. Ferries are reliable in June, but wind, port congestion, and schedule changes can happen. If you have a flight home from Athens, spend the final night in Athens or leave a large buffer.

What Surprises People About June

  • June is already busy: It is not a quiet shoulder-season month, especially in Oia, Fira, and at the port.
  • Late June can feel like peak season: Prices, crowds, and booking pressure rise noticeably as the month goes on.
  • The sea is good, not bath-warm: Swimming is enjoyable for most people, but the water is warmer in August and September.
  • Sunset requires planning: Oia viewpoints, caldera restaurants, and sunset boat tours are busy. Book or arrive early.
  • The heat is real: June is more comfortable than July and August, but the sun is strong and shade is limited.
  • Transport matters: Buses are useful from Fira, but staying outside Fira without a rental car or transfer plan can become frustrating.

June Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming June is low season: It is not. Late June is high season in almost every practical sense.
  • Waiting too long to book caldera hotels: The best rooms, views, and plunge pools go early.
  • Booking your boat tour on your last day: Wind can change plans. Schedule it early in your stay.
  • Starting the Fira-Oia hike too late: By late morning, the trail can be hot and exposed.
  • Making tight ferry-flight connections: Leave a buffer, especially before international flights.
  • Choosing a remote hotel without a transport plan: Beautiful villas and quiet villages can be wonderful, but taxis are limited and buses are not equally convenient everywhere.
  • Expecting spontaneous sunset dinners: You can always find somewhere to eat, but the best caldera-view tables need reservations.
  • Underestimating the black sand: Kamari, Perissa, and Perivolos beaches can get very hot underfoot by midday.

What to Pack for Santorini in June

  • Light Summer Clothes: Linen, cotton, shorts, sundresses, and breathable shirts work well.
  • Swimwear: Bring at least two swimsuits if you are doing beaches, pools, and boat tours.
  • Sun Protection: Hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and after-sun lotion. The June sun is strong.
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: Essential for Fira, Oia, village lanes, archaeological sites, and the caldera hike.
  • Sandals or Water Shoes: Useful for hot black sand and rocky beach entries.
  • Light Evening Layer: A linen shirt, thin sweater, or light jacket for breezy caldera dinners.
  • Nicer Dinner Outfit: Santorini is casual, but many caldera restaurants and hotel bars have a polished summer feel.
  • Small Day Bag: Useful for sunscreen, water, hat, swimsuit, and ferry or boat-tour essentials.

June vs. Other Months

  • June vs. May: May is cheaper, greener, and less crowded, but the sea is cooler and the island feels less summery. June is better for swimming, beach clubs, boat tours, and classic summer energy.
  • June vs. July: July is hotter, busier, and more expensive. June gives you most of the summer benefits with slightly less pressure.
  • June vs. August: August has warmer sea and the strongest peak-season buzz, but also the biggest crowds, highest prices, and strongest summer intensity. June is easier and more comfortable for most travelers.
  • June vs. September: September has warmer sea and softer light; June has longer days and a fresher start-of-summer feel. For swimming, I slightly prefer September. For long days, hiking early, and summer energy without August chaos, June is excellent.

Do I need a rental car in June?
Not always. If you stay in Fira and plan to use buses, taxis, tours, and transfers, you can manage without a car. A rental car is useful for beaches, wineries, Akrotiri, Pyrgos, Megalochori, and hotels outside the main villages. If you want a car in June, book ahead. See renting a car in Santorini.

Is June better than September in Santorini?
It depends. June has longer days, a fresh summer feel, and slightly less end-of-season fatigue. September has warmer sea, softer heat, and is my personal favorite for swimming and overall comfort. Both are excellent. Choose June for long days and start-of-summer energy; choose September for warmer water and a slightly smoother feel.
