Airbnb in Santorini

Updated: October 17, 2017

  • I don’t recommend using Airbnb for Santorini as there are few good rentals and their location is often not ideal.
  • Scams, where hosts take pictures from hotel websites and post them as Airbnb rentals, seem common.

Using Airbnb in Santorini

  • Be very careful. I have seen many Airbnb Santorini rentals that aren’t really rentals – just photos that have been taken from a website and re-posted as an Airbnb accommodation.
  • Very few Airbnb rentals have a caldera view as this land is almost exclusively owned by hotels. If a Santorini Airbnb has the description “great views” it’s probably talking about the eastern views, not caldera/volcano views.
  • Most Santorini Airbnb’s are located near Kamari Beach or Perissa Beach – which is fine but there are not many rentals near the picturesque towns of Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, or Firostefani (which is where I recommend most people should stay).
  • The biggest complaint I have about Airbnb (and a I hear this from friends and readers too) is that meeting with the owner to gain access to the rental is often difficult and time consuming. With a hotel, it’s always easy. Get off your flight, get a taxi, go to the hotel, check in. With Airbnb, expect a slow, time consuming, hassle. In fairness, it’s rarely more than a half-hour but it’s a lousy way to start your holiday.
  • Fira has the most nightlife and shopping. Imerovigli has the best views and best restaurants. Oia is a bit of both – quieter than Fira but more activity than Imerovigli.
  • If you need help with figuring out the location of a Santorini Airbnb (or any Santorini vacation rental) then post the link below and I’ll take a look. Though I don’t know many of the Santorini Airbnbs, by studying the pictures and the map I can usually make a good guess on its true location.

  1. Staying in Perissa

Katefiani Villas in Perissa, could you let me know if this would be a good base for visiting Santorini on a budget?

    1. Santorini DaveSantorini Dave The Guide to Greece

Nice hotel. Is it central? Not really. You’d be taking the bus to Fira (about 30 minutes) and then exploring from there.

I don’t know any of these but from the pictures they all look to be in about the same location – just south of the town center with great caldera views (but no sunset views). There’s a lot of foot traffic in this area but some places still manage to have decent privacy.

  2. Smaro Studios in Firostefani

Thank you so much for this wonderful website – my husband and I are planning our first trip to Greece and your site has been invaluable to us. We are going to spend 4 nights in Santorini in the first week of October this year. We are looking to book Smaro Studios in Firostefani for all 4 nights as it fits well in our budget. Could you please suggest if this is a good idea? Also is Firostefani a good base for our trip?

Great views and quiet location. A handful of good restaurants are within a 5 minute walk. For nightlife and shopping you need to make the 10 minute (down) to Fira and 15 minutes (back up). Or take the bus.

  3. Airbnb for Group of 4

    Hello Dave,
We are 4 people coming to Santorini after one week.
We have booked 5 nights from Irida Studios B&B in Imerovigli and 2 nights from airbnb in Fira (link below).
Do you happen to know these places and what’s your opinion of them?

Irida is great and has wonderful caldera views and a small pool. The Fira house is a 10 minute walk from central Fira and the views of the caldera but otherwise fine.

  4. Santorini Airbnb for Family of 5

Hi Dave. Love your website! Our family of five (2 adults 3 kids ages 10-15) will be visiting Santorini in summer 2018. Probably July. I’m looking to minimize expense but I’d like to find the nicest place I can for our budget. Hoping to stay below 400 euros per night. I’ve been looking at AirBnb and have narrowed it down to four places. I’d love your insight on which would be best based on location and view. I’d also love any other recommendations you’d have for our family of five in this price range.

All have good central locations a short walk from Oia’s shops and restaurants. The first 3 have caldera views but no sunset view. The last one has a sunset view but not a full caldera view. (I recommend caldera views over sunset views.)

  5. Airbnb Rental in Santorini

Can’t thank you enough for all your wonderful information, so helpful!
After reading your website I’m a little concerned about my Airbnb rental.
If you get a chanse please let me know if this a real place?

    We are staying 4 nights.

As far as I can tell it seems legit. Looks like it’s in the south section of Imerovigli, about a 5/10 minute walk to the best restaurants in Imerovigli and a 15 minute walk to shops and nightlife of Fira.

  6. Airbnb in Imerovigli and Oia

Hi Dave, your website is awesome and has been extremely helpful! We are planning our trip for next month, around middle of September. 2 questions: we are looking at 2 different places in Santorini, 1 is VRBO, the other is AIRBNB. Can you please tell me if these places are legit:

On AIRBNB – called Saint George Ocean Studio in Imerovigli
    https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/17336897

    On VRBO – Oia’s Nest
    VRBO.com/1504699a

Next question… Milos or Paros? Our plan is to spend 2 nights in Athens, 4 in Santorini, and 3-5 in Paros or Milos (or both). Originally we planned on staying in Paros at your suggestion Kanala’s and eating at Glafkos Taverna (looks amazing!) We’ve already booked Kanalas but can cancel. I’ve since seen pictures of Milos and falling in love! Should we stick w original plan of Paros, or go to Milos instead? Or go to both places (which would be Paros for 3 nights, Milos for 2 nights) Is it worth it to stop in Milos for just 2 nights? Thank you so much for getting back to me!

Both of those places look familiar but I just can’t place them. They seem very nice. I’m sure they’re fine. Both look to have beautiful caldera views (but neither will have a sunset view).

Both Milos and Paros are wonderful. Paros has the more typical greek island vibe than Milos. Milos, in some ways, feels like Santorini (very unique geographic features). You’ll love both and yes, you could visit both with five nights.

  7. Airbnb in Santorini

I did not see your opinion when we booked with Airbnb. Now I’m worried. Do you know if this Airbnb is legit?
    airbnb.com/rooms/18482781
    Thanks!

To be honest, no idea. Probably fine. It’s located a long way from Fira and the caldera so you’ll need to rent a car or take the bus to get anywhere.

  8. Airbnbs In Oia

Hello Dave!!! So excited to have found you!! My cousin and I are planning a trip in sept on a budget! We didn’t plan on this trip but she got free tickets from her work (yay) and they have to be used!- not complaining one bit! So I have been checking out Airbnbs! But now you have me a bit scared! Can you check out these few links please and let me know if sound real and if location is ok! We want to be somewhat close to oia .
    http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/661391
    http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/663242

Also checking out (now) the Museum Spa Wellness Hotel – not the best hotel but it seems right there and in the budget!
Also, we will be here only 2 nights (I’m trying to convince her to do 3 but she wants to do a night or 2 in Mykonos and we will do 2 nights in Athens). What are the major things we should do? We like to have fun and explore! Winos!! Thank you for this website! And thank you ahead of time for your advice!

The first is Marcos Rooms in the heart of Oia – very central location steps from shops and restaurants. It’s also on Booking.com for about $25 cheaper than Airbnb. The 2nd is Ecoxenia Aparthotels which clearly gets great reviews from happy guests but this place is a good 25 minute walk outside of Oia with no bus service. Renting a car or ATV is recommended for staying here. 3 nights in Santorini is much better than 2 as you get a whole other full day which makes quite a difference.

  9. Airbnb in Oia

Can you please tell me if this Oia Airbnb is in a good location with a nice view?
If we extend our trip by 2 days after being in Oia for 5 do you suggest relocating to a beach town? If so, which is best?

    Thank you!

    1. Santorini DaveSantorini Dave The Guide to Greece

That is really Genesis Cave House in Oia. Yes, great caldera views (but no sunset views – for those you’ll have to climb the steps over to the other side of Oia Castle, which is right there). It’s located right in the heart of Oia but with many steps to access. You can try looking for prices on Booking.com but they seem to be greyed out as the owners prefer using Airbnb since they can charge a higher rate. Beach is fine for two days but with a week in Santorini I’m sure you’ll find you get enough beach time almost by accident. I think your final days might be a bit of a let down if you stay at the beach. I would encourage you to spend the last two days in Fira, Firostefani, or Imerovigli.

  10. Santorini Airbnb with Infinity Pool and Caldera View

Do you happen to know of any Airbnb’s in Santorini that have an infinity pool and views of the caldera and volcano? Prefer somewhere between Fira and Oia. Traveling to Greece in July, 2018.

    1. Santorini DaveSantorini Dave The Guide to Greece

I don’t know of any Airbnb rentals with an infinity pool and view. I am not familiar with all (or even most) Santorini Airbnbs but nonetheless I would be surprised if there are any with an infinity pool overlooking the caldera. Small pools with no view, yes. But infinity pools, very unlikely. Hope that helps.

  11. Airbnb Santorini – Good Location?

We have been looking at using Airbnb in Santorini as a way to save money for family of 4 (don’t need the best caldera views just a good clean rental that is not in a bad location). We are considering a home rental that is described as near the village of Exo Gonia (link: airbnb.com/19141618). I wonder if you could take a look and tell me what you think of this location. Very much appreciated.

    Thanks!
    Thomas

    1. Santorini DaveSantorini Dave The Guide to Greece

This looks like a decent location. No caldera views but about a 15 minute drive to Fira, 30 to Oia. Most important the description seems accurate and they’re not trying to trick you into thinking you’ve got a great location. Metaxy Mas (an amazing restaurant), as the review describes, is nearby. Perhaps the only quibble is the description somewhat suggests that the open air cinema in Kamari is a walkable distance. It’s not, you will need a rental car to get there and back as no buses will get you home (especially late at night). Otherwise, looks good.

  12. VRBO vs AirBnb in Santorini, Greece

I wonder if you have any opinion on whether Airbnb or VRBO is better for finding houses in Santorini? (Or Homeaway or Expedia)? Looking for rentals that have great volcano views and could sleep a family of 5. Or one rental that could fit a large group. Full kitchen, private pool, washer and dryer, and close to restaurants and bars would be the ideal situation though realize might have to compromise on some features. Planning our visit for summer of 2018, either late August or early September depending on whether we go to Mykonos first or second.

    1. Santorini DaveSantorini Dave The Guide to Greece

My hunch is that VRBO will have a higher degree of luxury. I’m basing this on just a few personal experiences and feedback from travelers but it seems to hold up. Airbnb is better for saving money. VRBO is better for finding high-end rentals. But for Santorini VRBO, the same applies. Very few will have caldera views as this is the domain of luxury hotels. Even finding a rental house close to bars, shopping, and restaurants will not be easy (regardless of view), but most should have a full kitchen, washer/dryer, and a pool is not terribly hard to find.
