Is November a Good Time to Visit Greece?

November can be a very good month to visit Greece, but I would plan it as a sightseeing, food, history, city, and mainland trip rather than a traditional Greek-island vacation.

Athens is one of my favorite November destinations in Greece. Thessaloniki, Nafplio and the Peloponnese, Delphi, Meteora, and Crete are also excellent choices. Archaeological sites are quiet, hotel prices are generally lower, driving is easier than in summer, and cool weather makes long days of sightseeing much more comfortable.

For islands, Crete is my first choice. It has year-round cities, major archaeological sites, mountain villages, good restaurants, and plenty to do on rainy days. Rhodes is also worthwhile, especially Rhodes Town.

Santorini can be beautiful in November for caldera views, hiking, photography, and low hotel rates, but it is a very different Santorini from June or September. Many seasonal hotels and restaurants have closed, boat excursions are limited, and beach towns are extremely quiet.

I would not choose November for a first trip centered on Mykonos, Paros, Milos, or several small Cycladic islands. If your image of Greece is swimming every day, waterfront tavernas, busy island towns, beach clubs, and frequent ferries between islands, come in September or early October instead.

Greece in November: Quick Guide

• Best overall destinations: Athens, Crete, Nafplio and the Peloponnese, Thessaloniki, Delphi, and Meteora.
• Best island: Crete.
• Best for food and city life: Athens and Thessaloniki.
• Best mainland trip: Athens, Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus, and the Peloponnese.
• Best chance of mild weather: Crete and Rhodes.
• Swimming: Possible on warm southern days, but not something I would plan the trip around.
• Main drawbacks: Short days, less dependable weather, and fewer ferries and tourist services than in October.

Early November vs Late November

Early November is generally warmer and sunnier, making it better for Santorini, Crete, Rhodes, hiking, and outdoor sightseeing. Some seasonal businesses and ferry routes continue into early November, but check schedules before planning island connections.

Late November is cooler, with shorter days and a greater chance of unsettled weather. I would lean more strongly toward Athens, Thessaloniki, Crete, archaeological sites, and museums. Santorini still works for a quiet off-season visit, but Fira becomes an increasingly better base as the month progresses.

In northern Greece and mountain areas, prepare for cold weather, particularly at night.

Greece Weather in November

Southern Greece can still have afternoons around 20°C, while Thessaloniki, Meteora, Zagori, and mountain areas can feel much closer to winter. Don’t pack as though November were just a cooler September.

Typical average daytime highs in November:

• Athens: Around 19°C (66°F). Mild autumn weather, cool evenings, and a real chance of rain. Sunny afternoons can still feel warm.
• Crete: Around 20–21°C (68–70°F) in Chania and Heraklion. One of the mildest parts of Greece, though rain, cloud, and wind become more common.
• Rhodes: Around 20°C (68°F). Mild by European November standards but wetter and less dependable than October.
• Santorini and the Cyclades: Around 18–19°C (64–66°F). Mild temperatures, but wind exposure can make evenings feel cold.
• Corfu and the Ionian Islands: Around 19°C (66°F) in Corfu Town. Mild but noticeably wetter than much of southern and eastern Greece.
• Thessaloniki: Around 15°C (59°F). Cooler than Athens, with chilly evenings and occasional cold spells.
• Delphi and Meteora: Cool days and cold nights, with rain becoming more common. Bring layers and waterproof clothing.
• Zagori and mountain Greece: Cold nights with possible snow or ice at elevation.

These are monthly averages. Early November is usually warmer than late November, and individual days can be considerably warmer or colder.

Can You Swim in Greece in November?

Yes, but most travelers do not swim in Greece in November. The sea cools more slowly than the air, and water around Crete and Rhodes can still be around 20°C or slightly warmer early in the month. Cooler air, wind, cloud, and rain are what make swimming less appealing. Treat a swim as a bonus, not a reason to book Greece in November.

Daylight and Rain in November

In Athens, sunset is about 5:25 PM at the beginning of November and just after 5:00 PM by the end. Start archaeological sites, hikes, and road trips early.

November is part of the wetter season in Greece, particularly in western Greece and the mountains. Rain can interrupt sightseeing for a day or two, so I would leave some flexibility in the itinerary rather than assigning every outdoor activity to a specific day weeks in advance.

Best Places in Greece in November

Athens

Athens is my top choice for a first visit to Greece in November. Restaurants, shops, and museums stay open year-round, and the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Plaka, Monastiraki, and central neighborhoods are much easier to explore without summer heat.

Do not think of Athens as the obligatory two-night stop before heading to the islands. Four or five nights works well in November if you include the Acropolis Museum, National Archaeological Museum, good restaurants, Cape Sounion, or a day trip to Delphi.

Stay centrally. Plaka is best for atmosphere and walking to the major sights, Monastiraki is convenient and lively, Syntagma has the best transportation connections, and Psiri is good for restaurants and nightlife. My Where to Stay in Athens guide compares the best neighborhoods and hotels.

Crete

Crete is my favorite Greek island in November. Base yourself in Chania or Heraklion and spend your time exploring Knossos, museums, wineries, villages, and the countryside.

Stay in Chania for the most attractive town and western Crete, or Heraklion for Knossos, the archaeological museum, easier transportation, and a stronger city feel.

I would avoid an isolated beach resort simply because the room rate looks cheap. Many resorts and surrounding tourist businesses operate seasonally. The Samaria Gorge should not be part of a November itinerary. Its regular hiking season ends in October, and the full gorge route is closed in November.

For five to seven days, rent a car for at least part of your stay and explore archaeological sites, wineries, villages, and whichever outdoor activities fit the weather. You do not need a car for days spent entirely in central Chania or Heraklion. The Where to Stay in Crete guide covers the best bases.

Nafplio and the Peloponnese

November is an excellent time for a Peloponnese road trip if beaches are not a priority. Nafplio is the easiest base for a short trip from Athens and remains lively year-round. Mycenae, Epidaurus, Ancient Corinth, and Nemea are far more pleasant without summer heat and large tour-bus crowds.

With five to seven nights, continue to Monemvasia, Mystras, the Mani, or Ancient Olympia. I would not rush through all of them. Distances on the map can be misleading once the roads become mountainous.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is great in November, especially for food, museums, Byzantine churches, markets, and nightlife. Three nights is enough for the highlights. Four or five works well if food is a priority or you want a day trip. Thessaloniki pairs well with Meteora.

Delphi

Delphi is an excellent place to visit in November. Crowds are minimal, and walking around the sanctuary is much easier than in July. Delphi works as a long day trip from Athens, but I slightly prefer staying one night if your itinerary allows it. Arrive in the afternoon, explore Delphi village or nearby Arachova, then visit the archaeological site and museum the following morning before most tour buses arrive.

November is one of the wetter months in the Delphi area, and the archaeological site and museum generally close around 3:30 PM in winter. Plan your visit for the morning and bring a waterproof jacket.

Meteora

Meteora can be spectacular in November, with very few visitors and dramatic weather around the rock formations. Stay at least one night, preferably two, rather than squeezing it into a rushed day trip from Athens. Rain and wet hiking trails are the main concerns. Kalambaka and Kastraki function year-round, so you do not have the same seasonal-closure problem as on small tourist islands.

The monasteries have individual opening schedules, and some are closed on particular weekdays. Check the schedules before planning your visits.

Santorini

Santorini is worth visiting in November, but I would not recommend it for someone’s dream first-and-only Santorini vacation. The caldera is just as impressive, the Fira-to-Oia hike can be fantastic in cool weather, archaeological sites are quiet, and open hotels can cost a fraction of their summer rates.

Many luxury cave hotels close for winter, restaurant choices shrink, beach towns such as Kamari and Perissa become extremely quiet, and boat tours operate far less consistently.

Stay in Fira. It has the best year-round selection of restaurants, shops, buses, and services. Oia is beautiful without the crowds and can work for a quiet hotel stay, especially early in the month, but Fira is much more practical. I would not stay in Kamari, Perissa, or Perivolos in November.

I would give Santorini two or three nights as part of a longer November Greece trip. Flights from Athens continue year-round and are often easier than taking a long ferry. My Where to Stay in Santorini guide explains the differences between the towns.

Rhodes

Rhodes is a good November choice if history matters more than beaches. Stay in Rhodes Town. The medieval Old Town, museums, restaurants, and permanent population make it much more useful in November than the island’s seasonal beach resorts. Lindos is still worth visiting on a good-weather day.

Naxos

After Santorini, Naxos would be one of my next Cycladic choices in November, though mainly for repeat visitors to Greece. Stay in Naxos Town, not at the beach. Chora has year-round restaurants, shops, and local life. With a rental car you can explore Halki, Filoti, Apiranthos, mountain villages, churches, and the interior.

Syros

Syros is another good Cycladic choice in November, especially if you want a functioning town rather than beaches. Stay in Ermoupoli, the island’s capital, with its neoclassical architecture, restaurants, cafés, and year-round local life. I would choose Syros over Naxos for a town-focused November stay, but Naxos for countryside drives and hiking.

Corfu

Corfu Town works year-round and is great for food, museums, architecture, and walking. The drawback is rain. Corfu is significantly wetter than the Cyclades and much of southern Greece in November. I would choose it because I specifically wanted Corfu, not because I was looking for Greece’s best November weather. Stay in Corfu Town rather than a seasonal beach resort.

Islands I Would Skip in November

For most first-time visitors, I would skip Mykonos, Paros, Milos, the Small Cyclades, and most small islands in November. Local cafés, bakeries, supermarkets, and tavernas remain open, but many seasonal hotels, beach restaurants, tours, rental businesses, and convenient ferry connections have shut down.

If you have been to Greece several times and specifically want empty villages, walks, local cafés, and almost no tourism, a small island can be interesting in November. For a first trip, I would choose somewhere with more going on.

Athens and Mainland Greece in November

A Few Good November Itineraries

• 7 days: Athens (4 nights) and Nafplio (3 nights), with visits to Mycenae and Epidaurus.
• 10 days: Athens (4 nights), Nafplio/Peloponnese (3 nights), Delphi (1 night), and Athens (1 night).
• 10 days with an island: Athens (4 nights) and Crete (5 nights).
• 12 to 14 days: Athens, Nafplio/Peloponnese, and Delphi or Meteora, with extra time for a longer Peloponnese road trip or Crete.
• City-focused trip: Athens and Thessaloniki, with one or two nights in Meteora between them.

Zagori and northern mountain areas can also be beautiful, but cold, rain, snow, and ice become more important considerations by November. Go for villages, food, and scenery, and check trail and road conditions before heading into the mountains.

Flights and Ferries in November

November is not a good month for ambitious Greek island hopping. Major islands still have ferry connections, particularly to and from Piraeus, but there are fewer departures and many direct summer island-to-island routes have ended. Rough seas and autumn storms can also cause delays or cancellations, which matter more when there are fewer alternative sailings.

I am much more inclined to fly within Greece in November than during the main island-hopping season.

• Athens to Crete: I would normally fly unless an overnight ferry fits the itinerary particularly well.
• Athens to Rhodes: Fly.
• Athens to Santorini: Either works, but flying is often the easiest November choice.
• Athens to Naxos or Paros: Compare flight and ferry schedules for your dates.
• Santorini to Crete: Do not assume a direct ferry will operate in November. Some seasonal services continue into the first days of the month, but you may need to fly via Athens.

Check exact ferry dates before booking hotels. A route running in early November might not operate later in the month, and a cancellation can mean waiting until the following day or longer.

Athens plus one major island works much better than a long Cyclades chain. I would not plan Mykonos + Paros + Naxos + Santorini + Crete in November.

Archaeological Sites and Museums in November

Many archaeological sites switch to shorter winter opening hours on November 1, though museums do not all follow the same schedule. Major sites such as the Acropolis and Knossos remain open, but some attractions close as early as 3:30 PM. Do not assume you can arrive at 4:30 PM because that worked in September.

State-owned archaeological sites and museums managed by the Greek Ministry of Culture offer free admission on the first and third Sundays of each month from November through March. This does not necessarily apply to privately operated museums or every independently administered institution. Famous sites can be slightly busier on free-admission days, but November crowds are still modest compared with summer.

Driving in Greece in November

November is a good road-trip month, particularly in the Peloponnese. Roads are quieter, rental cars are easier to find, parking is simpler, and there is no summer heat. I would happily drive Athens to Nafplio, around the Argolis, through the Peloponnese, or across much of Crete in November.

• Start early: Darkness arrives around 5 PM.
• Allow extra time: Mountain roads can be narrow and winding, and rain makes driving slower.
• Check the forecast: Snow or ice is possible at elevation in northern and mountainous Greece.
• Avoid unnecessary night driving: Rural and mountain roads are much easier in daylight.

For Athens itself, I would not rent a car. Pick it up when leaving the city.

Hiking in Greece in November

Lower-elevation hiking can be good in November because the summer heat is gone. The Fira-to-Oia hike on Santorini can be fantastic on a clear day, and lower trails in the Peloponnese and Crete can be very comfortable.

Rain makes rocky paths slippery, and strong wind matters on exposed trails. For Meteora, Zagori, and mountain trails, check local conditions before setting out.

November Events and Dates to Know

The Athens Marathon is held on the second weekend of November. Expect road closures, transportation changes, and heavier hotel demand around the race, particularly near the finish at the Panathenaic Stadium.

November 17 is the anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic uprising. Large demonstrations and marches take place in central Athens and can cause road closures, transit changes, and a heavy police presence. If you are in Athens that day, check local transportation information before crossing the center by taxi or bus.

What to Pack for Greece in November

Pack for autumn, not for the beach.

• Layers: T-shirts or light shirts with sweaters or a light fleece.
• Waterproof jacket: More useful than a heavy winter coat for Athens, Crete, Rhodes, and the Cyclades.
• Comfortable shoes: Preferably water-resistant for wet cobblestones, archaeological sites, and trails.
• Warmer layer: Important for Thessaloniki, Delphi, Meteora, Zagori, and mountain areas.
• Small umbrella: Useful in cities, though a rain jacket is better on windy islands.
• Sunglasses and sunscreen: Still useful on clear days.
• Swimwear: Worth bringing for a heated pool, spa, or an unexpectedly warm day.

You do not need serious winter gear for Athens or Crete, but sandals and two T-shirts are not a November packing strategy.

October vs November vs December

• October: Warmer and much better for islands, swimming, ferries, and seasonal hotels. Early October can still feel like summer in southern Greece.
• November: Best for Athens, Thessaloniki, Crete, archaeology, food, road trips, low crowds, and low hotel prices.
• December: Cooler and darker, but better if Christmas in Athens, Thessaloniki, or mountain towns is part of the appeal.

For a first Greece trip focused on islands and beaches, I would choose October over November without hesitation. For Athens, archaeology, food, and mainland road trips, November is a nice choice.
