Mikra Thira Winery in Thirassia, near Santorini.

Nestled on the serene island of Thirassia, just 11 kilometers west of bustling Santorini, lies Mikra Thira, the island’s first and only winery. Thirassia, a hidden gem in the Aegean Sea, boasts a modest population of approximately 300, offering a peaceful escape from the tourist crowds. Mikra Thira is located in the northwest of Thirassia near the village of Potamos.

With its contemporary design, the winery features a bright, modern tasting room (newly opened in 2023) and a sunny patio that offers great views toward Folegandros, Ios, and Sikinos. Mikra Thira currently produces three dry white wines, all designated as PDO Santorini: Santorini, Nykteri, and Terrasea. Wine tours and tastings are available by appointment, offered five times daily from May to October.

Reaching Mikra Thira is an fun adventure in itself. A scenic ten-minute journey aboard a passenger-only ferry from Ammoudi port in Oia, on Santorini’s north coast, brings you to Thirassia’s Riva Port. The ferry, a charming and convenient mode of transport, operates three to four times daily during the summer months, and costs only €1. (Prebooking is not necessary.) For a more exclusive experience, private water taxis are also available for hire; advance booking is required and the trip will cost approximately €40 each way.
